Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture initiation and propagation in 4340 steel was investigated experimentally using the optical method of reflected caustics combined with high speed photography. A new crack propagation testing configuration consisting of a three point bend specimen loaded in a drop weight tower was used. It was found that prior to crack initiation the stress intensity factor time record calculated using the dynamic tip load and a static formula disagrees with the actual stress intensity factor measured by caustics. During crack propagation, the crack tip velocity and stress intensity factor time records varied smoothly and repeatably allowing for a straightforward interpretation of the data. The experiments show that for the particular heat treatment of 4340 steel used, the dynamic fracture propagation toughness depends on crack tip velocity through a relation that is a material property. Depending on how the chosen failure criterion is combined with the solution of a particular theory of continuum mechanics, the outcome could vary over a wide range. Mod elling of the material damage process could be elusive if the scale level of observation is left undefined. The specification of physical dimension alone is not sufficient because time and temperature also play an intimate role. It is only when the latter two variables are fixed that failure predictions can be simplified. The sudden fracture of material with a pre-existing crack is a case in point. Barring changes in the local temperature,* the energy released to create a unit surface area of an existing crack can be obtained by considering the change in elastic energy of the system before and after crack extension. Such a quantity has been referred to as the critical energy release rate, G e, or stress intensity factor, K Ie. Other parameters, such as the crack opening displacement (COD), path-independent J-integral, etc. , have been proposed; their relation to the fracture process is also based on the energy release concept. These one-parameter approaches, however, are unable simultaneously to account for the failure process of crack initiation, propagation and onset of rapid fracture. A review on the use of G, K I, COD, J, etc. , has been made by Sih [1,2].

The apparatus is an adaptation of the Kolsky pressure bar (split-Hopkinson bar) in which a 1-in.-diameter round bar specimen with a prefatigued circumferential notch is loaded to failure by the rapidly rising tensile pulse resulting from an explosive detonation. Using the standard Kolsky technique, the average stress at the fracture site is measured as a function of time. Crack opening displacement is measured by optical means, as a function of time, thus yielding a complete load-displacement record for each test. From the data the critical value of the crack-tip stress intensity factor, K1c, at loading rates, ?K1 in excess of 109 psi ?in./s may be obtained. This is nearly two orders of magnitude faster than has been achieved by other standard techniques. Results are presented for dynamic tests conducted on SAE 4340 steel and 1020 cold-rolled steel, and these are compared to results from static tests performed on specimens of similar shape.

Book excerpt: Classical concepts of Griffith-Irwin fracture mechanics were extended to include time effects and hence to apply to crack instability under dynamic loads. Theoretical considerations of the stress intensity histories experienced by cracks subjected to short pulse loads suggested that instability requires the crack tip stress intensity to exceed the dynamic toughness for a minimum time. This postulate was checked by experiments. Impact techniques were used to produce well-defined stress pulses in specimens of an epoxy, 4340 steel, 1018 steel, and 6061-T6 aluminum containing cracks of several lengths to observe crack instability behavior. The experimental results were not well described by static fracture mechanics, but were in accord with the minimum time postulates deduced from stress intensity histories. The understanding gained from the research program promises to be useful in assessing the safety of structures under dynamic loads, in characterizing the dynamic fracture resistance of materials, and in designing equipment and procedures for measuring dynamic fracture toughness. The relationship between dynamic initiation toughness and dynamic propagation toughness was addressed. The temperature histories in material near a rapidly propagating crack in a steel plate were measured and used to compute the heat of fracture and the dynamic propagation toughness. Simultaneous measurements of the dynamic stress intensity were made using the shadow optical method of caustics and high speed photography.
