Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underlying principles of dynamic fracture and crack arrest in fiber composites are reviewed in terms of the conservation of mechanical energy. An approximate Mode 1 dynamic crack extension force for a highly orthotropic 0 degree unidirectional fiber composite is derived. The governing partial differential equations for dynamic crack propagation in double cantilever beam unidirectional composite specimens are derived. A finite-difference scheme for solving these equations is presented along with the stability and convergence criteria for a numerical solution. A conductive grid system for measuring the crack-tip velocity profile is described. This system is capable of assisting in the measurement of the dynamic fracture toughness of fiber composites. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is divided into five chapters covering new analytical solutions for dynamic cracks in orthotropic composites. Each chapter stands alone and has been submitted, accepted or prepared for publication in a refereed journal. First, closed form solutions for uniformly loaded semi-infinite cracks in orthotropic materials are presented. Next, solutions regarding the stress intensity factor at the tip of propagating cracks in orthotropic materials are presented. In addition, closed form, dynamic Green's functions solutions are given for semi-infinite cracks in orthotropic materials. Previously, in last year's report, numerical Green's function solutions were presented for this case the first time. These newer, closed form solutions are much easier to produce and implement in more complex solutions. The problem of having a crack in transversely isotropic material rotated with respect to the crack front is also solved with some effort. The methodology used in finding all these solutions may be used in other problems including penetration mechanics. Such applications are currently being explored. Finally, experimental investigation of the application of these solutions to dynamic crack initiation in composites under impact conditions is being completed.

Book excerpt: The report is divided into two parts, one covering the work on orthotropic composites and the other covering the work on isotropic metals. Each part consists of two chapters which stand alone, each having been submitted, accepted or prepared for publication in a referred journal. Separate bibliographies are given for parts 1 and 2. The work on composites has succeeded in producing fundamental, dynamic Green's functions solutions for cracks in orthotropic materials. These solutions may be used in calculating the stress intensity factor history on stationary cracks subjected to dynamic loading and may be very useful in predicting crack initiation under such conditions. Currently, experimental investigation of the application of these solutions to crack initiation in composites in two different configurations is beginning. It is expected that a report on that work will be submitted next year. The work on metals has been successful in experimentally demonstrating the usefulness of the dynamic stress intensity factor in predicting shear failure in metals under impact loads. This demonstration is predicted on the assumption that small scale yielding conditions exist in the experiments. The last chapter reflects an ongoing experimental investigation into the validity of that assumption. It seems to suggest that the assumption is correct, but further, more conclusive results are sought.

Book excerpt: Progress is reviewed with emphasis on a model of stress intensity factors in dynamic punch test. The specimen is assumed to be initially at rest and the projectile is rigid. Impact of the rigid projectile is modeled by a constant velocity condition on the impact surface. Three support geometries are considered for each specimen geometry: a free back surface, a fixed back surface, and a two dimensional punch. Analytical approximations for the stress intensity factor history are given for short times, while dynamic quarter point finite element solutions are included for longer times. The stress intensity factor is shown to increase with time due to wave reflection in the two dimensional punch and fixed back support geometries, while it decreases with time for the free back surface. The stress intensity factors in the plate specimen are also greater than those in the edge notched specimen in all tests. For applicability to manufacturing operations and increased chance of shear dominated failure, it is recommended that the two dimensional punch or fixed back surface geometries of the plate specimen be used in experimental studies.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three phase program to improve the impact resistance of composite materials was undertaken. In the first phase, the Charpy impact test is investigated as a method for characterising dynamic behavior. The importance of differentiating between the energies of crack initiation and crack propagation is discussed, and a parameter called the Ductility Index is proposed, together with maximum stress and work of fracture for comparing the dynamic fracture behavior of fiber composites. Slow three point bending and instrumented impact tests were carried out to investigate the quasi-static and dynamic fracture behavior of (1) unidirectional fiber composites consisting of carbon and glass fibers embedded in an epoxy resin matrix; (2) cross-ply carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites, and (3) a carbon fiber/glass fiber/epoxy resin hybrid composite. It was found that fiber hybridization could raise both the fracture stress and toughness, and ductility index of carbon fiber composite materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer composites are engineered materials widely being used and yet not completely understood for their dynamic response. It is important to fully characterize material properties before using them for applications in critical industries, like that of defense or transport. In this project, the focus is on determining dynamic fracture toughness property of fiber reinforced polymer composites by using a combined numerical- experimental methodology. Impact tests are conducted on Split-Hopkinson pressure bar with required instrumentation to obtain load-history and initiation of crack propagation parameters followed by finite element analysis to determine desired dynamic properties. Single edge notch bend(SENB) type geometry is used for Mode-I fracture testing and similarly end-notched flexure (ENF) type of geometry is proposed to test the samples for Mode-II type of fracture. Two different linear elastic fracture mechanics approaches are used- crack opening displacement and strain energy release rates. Dynamic fracture toughness values of around 50 MPa[square root of m] and 100 MPa[square root of m] in Mode-I, whereas, around 40 MPa[square root of m] and 6 MPa[square root of m] in Mode-II are observed for carbon-epoxy and fiberglass-epoxy composites respectively. To provide a better estimate of material response, Hashin damage model is employed which takes into account non-linear behavior of composites. As observed in previous studies, values estimated using a non-linear response of composite laminates are nearly three times as high, therefore, using a linear elastic material model could underestimate a material's capacity to sustain dynamic loads without failure. It is concluded that fracture initiation toughness property is rate dependent and is higher when subjected to dynamic loads. Microscopic examination of damaged samples and a higher value of dynamic fracture toughness for fiberglass-epoxy laminates as compared to carbon-epoxy laminates suggest that dynamic fracture toughness is also a function of many other variables like mode of fracture, dominant damage criteria, manufacturing process, constituent materials and their ratios.
