Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes research being pursued within the Research Unit FOR 2089, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the goal of which is to develop the scientific base for a paradigm shift towards dimensioning, structural realization and maintenance of pavements, and prepare road infrastructure for future requirements. It provides a coupled thermo-mechanical model for a holistic physical analysis of the pavement-tire-vehicle system: based on this model, pavement structures and materials can be optimized so that new demands become compatible with the main goal – durability of the structures and the materials. The development of these new and qualitatively improved modelling approaches requires a holistic procedure through the coupling of theoretical numerical and experimental approaches as well as an interdisciplinary and closely linked handling of the coupled pavement-tire-vehicle system. This interdisciplinary research provides a deeper understanding of the physics of the full system through complex, coupled simulation approaches and progress in terms of improved and, therefore, more durable and sustainable structures.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of June 1993 international symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia, called specifically to develop and standardized evaluation procedures for non-destructive methods of testing pavements. The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. Also includes a history of the quest for a standard and the status of that effort. Reproduced from typescripts. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the importance of accounting for the dynamic behavior of the rigid pavement system during falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing. An analytical closed-form solution for dynamic loading of a plate on the Winkler foundation is derived and, using this solution, FWD sensor deflections are simulated and compared with the measured deflections. The lag between the peak of the applied FWD load and sensor deflections can be explained by the effects of pavement inertia and subgrade dumping. Nondimensional parameters that govern the dynamic behavior of a rigid pavement system are also identified.

Book excerpt: In this study, a rational overlay design method for flexible pavements in Arizona has been developed which includes roughness, fatigue and plastic deformation models. The method is incorporated in a microcomputer program which is also capable of analyzing the economics of other rehabilitation alternatives. During the development of the method, twenty in-service pavement sites were selected from Arizona highways covering various geographical and environmental regions, soil types, pavement conditions and traffic volumes. nondestructive tests (NDT) were performed on these sites using the Falling Weight Deflectometer at three stress levels as well as the Dynaflect. The pavement layers and subgrade moduli were backcalculated from NDT data using both static and dynamic analyses. The moduli of asphaltic layers were further adjusted for temperature. Statistical analysis was performed and the stress sensitivity was found to be small. Cone Penetration tests were further performed to verify the subgrade moduli. Asphalt concrete cores, base and subbase samples and undisturbed subgrade materials. In addition, base and subbase gradation as well as soil classification and Atterberg limits were obtained. The study expanded the data base for material properties in Arizona. This volume is the first in a three volume set. Volume II provides field testing procedure and workstation development and Volume III is a computer user guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicle dynamics and road dynamics are usually considered to be two largely independent subjects. In vehicle dynamics, road surface roughness is generally regarded as random excitation of the vehicle, while in road dynamics, the vehicle is generally regarded as a moving load acting on the pavement. This book suggests a new research concept to integrate the vehicle and the road system with the help of a tire model, and establishes a cross-subject research framework dubbed vehicle-pavement coupled system dynamics. In this context, the dynamics of the vehicle, road and the vehicle-road coupled system are investigated by means of theoretical analysis, numerical simulations and field tests. This book will be a valuable resource for university professors, graduate students and engineers majoring in automotive design, mechanical engineering, highway engineering and other related areas. Shaopu Yang is a professor and deputy president of Shijiazhuang Tiedao University, China; Liqun Chen is a professor at Shanghai University, Shanghai, China; Shaohua Li is a professor at Shijiazhuang Tiedao University, China.

This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “soft computing” applies to variants of and combinations under the four broad categories of evolutionary computing, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and Bayesian statistics. Although each one has its separate strengths, the complem- tary nature of these techniques when used in combination (hybrid) makes them a powerful alternative for solving complex problems where conventional mat- matical methods fail. The use of intelligent and soft computing techniques in the field of geo- chanical and pavement engineering has steadily increased over the past decade owing to their ability to admit approximate reasoning, imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth. Since real-life infrastructure engineering decisions are made in ambiguous environments that require human expertise, the application of soft computing techniques has been an attractive option in pavement and geomecha- cal modeling. The objective of this carefully edited book is to highlight key recent advances made in the application of soft computing techniques in pavement and geo- chanical systems. Soft computing techniques discussed in this book include, but are not limited to: neural networks, evolutionary computing, swarm intelligence, probabilistic modeling, kernel machines, knowledge discovery and data mining, neuro-fuzzy systems and hybrid approaches. Highlighted application areas include infrastructure materials modeling, pavement analysis and design, rapid interpre- tion of nondestructive testing results, porous asphalt concrete distress modeling, model parameter identification, pavement engineering inversion problems, s- grade soils characterization, and backcalculation of pavement layer thickness and moduli.
