Book excerpt: This thesis presents original research and conclusions related to the effects of forces acting on inactive nuclear fuel rods during launch from Earth into orbit. Much research has gone into studying thermal stresses on nuclear fuel rods while active in a nuclear thermal propulsion engine. However, there has been no substantive analysis or testing on the mechanical stresses the fuel rods will endure during the initial launch from Earth, before they are active as part of an in-space propulsion system. In this thesis, we investigate nuclear fuel rod designs used by the previous Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application (NERVA) program. A finite element analysis is developed for use on these fuel rod designs to build a kinematic model allowing improved understanding of the kinematic and dynamic responses of the system during launch. Ultimately, this tool and analysis will allow us to ascertain whether any fractures or cracking will occur as a result of the acceleration and vibrational forces of a launch, or demonstrate by analysis that this design is suitable for launch.
