Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before invasion, Turtle Island-or North America-was home to vibrant cultures that shared long-standing philosophical precepts. The most important and wide-spread of these was the view of reality as a collaborative binary known as the Twinned Cosmos of Blood and Breath. This binary system was built on the belief that neither half of the cosmos can exist without its twin. Both halves are, therefore, necessary and good. Western anthropologists typically shorthand the Twinned Cosmos as "Sky and Earth" but this erroneously saddles it with Christian baggage and, worse, imposes a hierarchy that puts sky quite literally above earth. None of this Western ideology legitimately applies to traditional Indigenous American thought, which is about equal cooperation and the continual recreation of reality. Spirits of Blood, Spirits of Breath examines traditional historical concepts of spirituality among North American Indians both at and, to the extent it can be determined, before contact. In doing so, Barbara Alice Mann rescues the authentically indigenous ideas from Western, and especially missionary, interpretations. In addition to early European source material, she uses Indian oral traditions, traced as much as possible to their earliest versions and sources, and Indian records, including pictographs, petroglyphs, bark books, and wampum. Moreover, Mann respects each Indigenous culture as a discrete unit, rather than generalizing them as is often done in Western anthropology. To this end, she collates material in accordance with actual historical, linguistic, and traditional linkages among the groups at hand, with traditions clearly identified by group and, where recorded, by speaker. In this way she provides specialists and non-specialists alike a window into the purportedly lost, and often caricatured, world of Indigenous American thought.

Book excerpt: Delko and his companions escaped the Monastery of Fordosheol, having conquered Archbishop Haridan and his evil minions. Now they must face a more dastardly foe: Despot, the son of Archbishop Haridan. Despot plans to steal the last of the four keys that will open one of the Emerald Doors, which provides entrance into the forbidden lands of the Elemental Dragons. Thestral has been dwelling in the underworld for over two thousand years awaiting his rebirth. Despot magically impregnates Princess Adi, who gives birth to Thestral. Thestral will even sacrifice his mother to release the creatures from the dark abyss, so he can conquer the Cave Dwarfs, annihilate the Elf Queendom, and steal the last of the four keys from the Druids to help his father Despot open an Emerald Door. Despot and Humford, a previous governor for the School of Dark Magic, create an alliance with the mother of the underworld, Saligia, who will unleash each of her seven children to create havoc and devastation among the nine dwarf clans, reducing their ability to aid the Druids, the Elf Queendom, and the Cave Dwarfs.

As the first book to take a systematic account of the universal human tendency to deny or minimize biology, this book considers a wide variety of these anti-biological systems and their relation to larger issues, particularly gender studies. Discussed in this book are a wide variety of expressions of the antithesis between human beings and natural processes in which the latter are denied, denigrated, or minimized. Book excerpt: John Irving's memoir begins with his account of the distinguished career and medical writings of the novelist's grandfather Dr. Frederick C. Irving, a renowned obstetrician and gynecologist, and includes Mr. Irving's incisive history of abortion politics in the United States. But My Movie Business focuses primarily on the thirteen years John Irving spent adapting his novel The Cider House Rules for the screen--for four different directors. Mr. Irving also writes about the failed effort to make his first novel, Setting Free the Bears, into a movie; about two of the films that were made from his novels (but not from his screenplays), The World According to Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire; about his slow progress at shepherding his screenplay of A Son of the Circus into production. Not least, and in addition to its qualities as a memoir--anecdotal, comic, affectionate, and candid--My Movie Business is an insightful essay on the essential differences between writing a novel and writing a screenplay. The photographs in My Movie Business were taken by Stephen Vaughan, the still photographer on the set of The Cider House Rules--a Miramax production directed by Lasse Hallström, with Michael Caine in the role of Dr. Larch. Concurrently with the November 1999 release of the film, Talk Miramax Books will publish John Irving's screenplay.

Book excerpt: Laron Syndrome (LS) is a disease characterized by resistance to growth hormone (GH) and caused by molecular defects of the GH receptor, leading to a deficiency of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and a significant impairment of growth. The syndrome is a unique human model of a peptide hormone receptor defect and GH-IGF-1 interaction. It offers the opportunity to study the consequences of long-term IGF-1 deficiency and the role of IGF-1 in growth and metabolism. With the recent biosynthesis of IGF-1 and the initiation of IGF-1 therapy, a whole new world of basic biological interactions is opening up. This volume brings together leading researchers in genetics, endocrinology, pediatrics, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology to summarize what is now known about LS, and to discuss the lessons learned from studying and treating this disease since its initial description in 1966. Special features include the demography of LS, and the first data on the long-term IGF-1 treatment of a large group of patients.

Book excerpt: A Hindi film star, an American missionary, a pair of twins separated at birth, a diminutive chauffeur, and a serial killer collide in a riotous novel by the author of The World According to Garp “His most entertaining novel since Garp.”—The New York Times Book Review “A Son of the Circus is comic genius . . . get ready for [John] Irving's most raucous novel to date.”—The Boston Globe “Dr. Farrokh Daruwalla, reared in Bombay by maverick foes of tradition, educated in Vienna, married to an Austrian and long a resident of Toronto, is a 59-year-old without a country, culture, or religion to call his own. . . . The novel may not be 'about' India, but Irving's imagined India, which Daruwalla visits periodically, is a remarkable achievement—a pandemonium of servants and clubmen, dwarf clowns and transvestite whores, missionaries and movie stars. This is a land of energetic colliding egos, of modern media clashing with ancient cultures, of broken sexual boundaries.”—New York Newsday “His most daring and most vibrant novel . . . The story of circus-as-India is told with gusto and delightful irreverence.”—Bharati Mukherjee, The Washington Post Book World “Ringmaster Irving introduces act after act, until three (or more) rings are awhirl at a lunatic pace. . . . [He] spills characters from his imagination as agilely as improbable numbers of clowns pile out of a tiny car. . . . His Bombay and his Indian characters are vibrant and convincing.”—The Wall Street Journal “Irresistible . . . powerful . . . Irving's gift for dialogue shines.”—Chicago Tribune BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from John Irving's In One Person.

Book excerpt: I’ve written a number of books about legendary beings such as Bigfoot, Dragons, Thunderbirds, Sea Monsters, Giants, and more. I also wrote a book titled “The Mythical People of Ireland” which covered the Tuatha Da Danann, Druids, and Leprechaun elves. The information I found for that book caused me to become more curious about the little people generally. There are legends of the Little People all over the world. Even more interesting is that a race of very small people who were close to three feet tall were uncovered recently in Indonesia. This race is called the Flores Man and was of a similar size to the beings in many of the legends of the little people. This find is amazing because none of the other legendary beings have confirmed evidence of those little people in archeological sites. These findings add a lot of credibility to those old legends. In this book we cover these little beings from different areas of the world. This includes where they came from, stories about them possibly coming from different dimensions, and stories about sightings of them. Hope you enjoy this adventure into what seems like it might be a real race of intelligent legends.
