Book excerpt: The Dutch chess opening is renowned as a fighting weapon against 1.d4, as 1...f5 immediately sets up an unbalanced struggle. Then Black's kingside fianchetto, which defines the Leningrad Dutch, allows pawn-storming play in similar style to the King's Indian Defense. Mihail Marin is the ideal author to explain both the strategic ideas and the latest theory. Leningrad Dutch covers lines where White also fianchettoes the king's bishop - these lines are the critical test of the Leningrad. The companion volume, Dutch Sidelines, completes Black's Dutch repertoire.

Moskalenko covers the Anti-Dutch, Leningrad, Stonewall and Classical variations. He guides you through this ground-breaking opening book with the enthusiasm, the ease and the humor that characterize his style. For ‘The Diamond Dutch’ goes what chess star Vassily Ivanchuk said about Moskalenko’s previous work ‘The Perfect Pirc-Modern’: “This book will undoubtedly help you to master not just the Pirc and Modern Defences, but also to systematize and perfect your understanding of the key points of other openings.” ,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Leningrad System of the Dutch Defence is an interesting hybrid of the Dutch and the King's Indian. For many years, it was viewed with some suspicion in view of the slight positional weaknesses created in Black's position. However, in the 1980s dynamic new approaches were introduced by such players as Sergei Dolmatov, Evgeny Bareev, Mikhail Gurevich and especially Vladimir Malaniuk. These players showed how an active approach could compensate for these defects, and offer Black excellent winning chances. Since then, the Leningrad has been a popular and effective opening choice for players of all levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Dutch Naval Air Force--or Marine Luchtvaart Dienst (MLD)--played a significant but largely overlooked role in the opening months of the Pacific War. With 175 aircraft, the MLD greatly outnumbered the combined forces of its American and British allies. In three months of intense combat, the MLD lost 50 percent of its personnel and 80 percent of its aircraft, as the Netherlands' colonial empire was stripped away. This book details MLD operations during the Japanese invasion of Dutch East Indies, giving a comprehensive overview of organization, personnel, aircraft, equipment and tactics. For the first time in English, the failed evacuation of Java is examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dutch Defense players often have the smug satisfaction of knowing their opening better than their opponents. But if you play the Dangerfield Attack, the joke will be on Black! Like the American comic icon Rodney Dangerfield, those who use an early Bf4 against the Dutch "get no respect." Dutch Defense manuals frequently dismiss it, but then they ignore White's best continuation, often assuming the first player will follow up with a meek London System setup. Rudel presents an entirely new way to play Bf4 against the Dutch. This attack is a plug-and-play solution for those opening 1.d4. All standard Dutch Defense formations are covered, including Q-side fianchetto defenses and the deferred Leningrad. NOTE: This book is essentially the anti-Dutch segment from Rudel's much larger book, Fight the King's Indian, Grunfeld, and Dutch Defenses with Zuka. This smaller book has been released concurrently specifically (and solely!) for those who are satisfied with their lines against ...g6 and only want a new response to the Dutch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch Defence is one of Black's most combative responses to 1.d4, and the Stonewall is the boldest version of this opening. Black immediately seizes space in the centre and clamps down on the e4-square, laying the foundations for a complicated strategic battle. Many players believe the Stonewall to be a substandard opening, naively assuming that the e5-outpost and bad light-squared bishop must give White the advantage. GM Nikola Sedlak disagrees, and in Playing the Stonewall Dutch he shares the insights that have helped him to rack up a healthy plus score from Black's side. In addition to providing a complete repertoire in the main lines of the Stonewall, this book also offers useful guidance on dealing with Anti-Dutch variations and various move-order subtleties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history which deals with the end of Dutch colonial rule, the early years of independent Indonesia, the West New Guinea question, and the emergence of Papuan nationalism. The book covers several key themes. The Indonesian Revolution (1945-1949) is treated only summarily. The book chiefly concentrates on Dutch policies and perspectives, which have so far generally been ignored in existing English-language publications. Netherlands-Indonesian relations between 1950 and 1958 are treated in depth, with a description and analysis of the struggle for power between the early, more Western-attuned and economic-rationalist cabinets, on the support of which the fate of the vast Netherlands-controlled export economy was dependent, and the masses, driven by Sukarno and the populist parties. West New Guinea and Papua nationalism began as early as the 1920s and 1930s, and by the early 1950s the Dutch had set about guiding the Papuans towards independence. This policy had to be aborted, however, with the threat of an Indonesian invasion and the unwillingness of the US to provide armed support to Dutch forces. As a result, Australia, too, was reluctantly forced to abandon the Dutch. Australia was forced to accept the inevitable. It had actively encouraged the Netherlands to hold onto West New Guinea, completed agreements on economic and social cooperation, and conducted in-depth studies about a possible Australia-Dutch defense system against Indonesian aggression. Without US military support, however, the situation became untenable. This book will be required reading for those seeking to understand the genesis of the situation in West New Guinea today, where Papuan nationalism is again in the ascendant following the recent dramatic events leading to the independence of East Timor.

Book excerpt: The Leningrad System is one of the sharpest and most interesting replies to 1 d4, and since this typical set-up is also playable against the flank openings 1 c4 and 1 Nf3, it provides the Black player with a genuine universal weapon. A repertoire for Black based on 7...Qe8 in the main line of the Leningrad System is presented here, but since the typical motifs and ideas for both sides are fully explained, White players too will benefit from a study of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas addresses the New Dutch Water Defence Line (Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie) on a themed basis. Its position in the landscape, the forts, the inundation system, the geomorphology, the strategic system and recent developments can be read off in maps rendered so as to give an understanding of all aspects of the defence line landscape. The defence line reveals itself as a many-tentacled military defensive system of forts, group shelters and polders that can be flooded at the threat of war. The maps show the cohesion of the defence line as a landscape-strategic structure as well as the topographic composition of this structure in layers and components. The more detailed maps of the forts display the wealth of historic places, insertions in the landscape and defining elements. The atlas offers administrators something to lean on and designers a sense of freedom - a solid stepping-off point for getting this unique national landscape literally back on the map. Essays place the New Dutch Water Defense Line in a historical perspective
