Download or read book Colonial Policy written by A. D. A. De Kat Angelino and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1931, this book contains an abridged translation of Dr De Kat Angelino's analysis of the development of Dutch colonial policy, particularly with regard to Dutch colonies in the East. The views expressed in the text were notably liberal for their time, and volume one is primarily concerned with the principles and history of Empire-building in antiquity and in more modern times, as well as the daunting task of modernisation facing the colonial world. This richly-researched book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of European colonialism.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reaspns why the period following the English interregnum in the Netherlands Indies and preceding the establishment of the Compulsory Cultivation system has been chosen as the sub ject of this thesis are the following: 1. Until recently this period, which is of the greatest importance if one desires to know why the Compulsory Cultivation system was introduced, has been rather neglected and treated according to preconceived ideas. Because of that, a wrong interpretation has been given to the attempts to establish a liberal colonial policy. In the light of new evidence, we hope to arrive at a more correct evaluation of the principles, which governed Dutch colo nial policy during that period. 2. By studying this period and especially the attempts to align the colonial policy with the new principles of liberalism, we hope to find some general principles which may be of value for a better understanding of the problems which confront the Dutch at present in the Indies. Regardless of the intrinsic value of the new liberal principles in colonial policy, it can be easily understood that their success or failure depended very much on a correct evaluation of the impact which previous policies had had on the Indonesian society.
Book Synopsis Dutch Colonialism, Migration and Cultural Heritage by : Geert Oostindie
Download or read book Dutch Colonialism, Migration and Cultural Heritage written by Geert Oostindie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration flows in the former Dutch colonial orbit created an intricate web connecting the Netherlands to Africa, Asia and the Americas; Africa to the Americas and to Asia; in the nineteenth century Asia to the Americas, with, in the post-Second World War period, the direction of migration shifting to the Netherlands. Some of these migrations were voluntary, others were forced; they helped to create colonial societies that were never typically Dutch, but did have Dutch characteristics. Power imbalance, ethnic differences and creolization characterized the cultural configuration of these colonial societies. This book, with contributions by a number of Dutch scholars, provides state-of-the-art discussions on these migration histories. In addition, it presents reflections on the ways this past and its repercussions are remembered (or forgotten, or actively silenced) throughout the former colonial empire. This part of the book is embedded in the wider contemporary debate about the contested concept of cultural heritage, and about the possibility of meaningful cultural heritage policies in a post-colonial world.
