Book excerpt: The present book considers the development of figurative wall painting in the southern Low Countries over a period of two centuries, between circa 1300 and 1500. The region had a long-standing tradition of monumental figurative painting, of which the earliest, romanesque, examples are still preserved at Tournai and Ghent. Despite the central role that figurative wall painting clearly continued to play in the art, propaganda, and liturgy of the courts and churches of the late medieval southern Low Countries, the medium has been largely overlooked in comparison with the attention paid by art historians to other contemporary art forms. A variety of factors have contributed to this neglect, of which the most significant are undoubtedly the random survival, and the often damaged condition, of extant wall paintings, as well as the frequently remote locations and difficulty of access to the buildings housing them. Benign neglect and active vandalism have ensured that only a fraction of the great wall painting ensembles of the late medieval era have survived. Today, only fifty or so individual murals or ensembles of the Late Gothic period -not including a large number of tomb paintings -once in the churches and monasteries, town halls and guild chapels, castles and hotels of the southern Low Countries, have survived the passage of time, wars, iconoclasm, and changing fashions of interior decoration. These include many previously unrecorded wall paintings discovered beneath layers of whitewash in churches and private residences within the last twenty-five years or so, and restored by conservation staff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The National Gallery of Art's collection of seventeenth-century Flemish paintings is relatively small, numbering less than sixty, but exceptional in quality. At the core of the collection are twelve paintings by Sir Peter Paul Rubens and his school and seventeen paintings by Sir Anthony van Dyck, including some of their finest masterpieces. Also represented are excellent works by other important Flemish masters, among them Osias Beert the Elder, Adriaen Brouwer, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and David Teniers the Younger." "This catalogue of the Gallery's remarkable collection of Flemish paintings offers new information about each of the individual works. Stylistic characteristics of the paintings have been analyzed; historical circumstances related to their creation have been assessed; and their provenances have been reexamined. A number of the paintings have undergone conservation treatment, while the technical characteristics of other works have been thoroughly studied. This exhaustive research has indicated that the titles, dates, and even attributions of a number of works needed to be changed, and the catalogue includes a concordance of these revisions."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "This classic survey book provides an authoritative and perceptive study of Dutch painting from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Esteemed scholar Seymour Slive focuses on the major artists of the period, analyzing works by Hals, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jacob van Ruisdael, and many others. He discusses the kinds of painting that became Dutch specialties-- portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, seascapes, Italianate pictures, architectural painting, and still lifes-- as well as traditional biblical and historical subjects painted by artists of the period. He also importantly examines patronage and trends of art theory, criticism, and collecting. In this revised edition, Slive has completely rewritten and expanded his original text, taking into account his own and other recent scholarship on Dutch painting as well as new archival finds, technical analyses of paintings made by conservators and scientists, and significant pictures that have been discovered. Hundreds of works reproduced in black-and-white in the print version of the book have been replaced here with high-quality color illustrations"--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on original material and approaches from the developing fields of the history of emotions and childhood studies and brings together scholars from history, literature and cultural studies, to reappraise how the early modern world reacted to the deaths of children. Child death was the great equaliser of the early modern period, affecting people of all ages and conditions. It is well recognised that the deaths of children struck at the heart of early modern families, yet less known is the variety of ways that not only parents, but siblings, communities and even nations, responded to childhood death. The contributors to this volume ask what emotional responses to child death tell us about childhood and the place of children in society. Placing children and their voices at the heart of this investigation, they track how emotional norms, values, and practices shifted across the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries through different religious, legal and national traditions. This collection demonstrates that child death was not just a family matter, but integral to how communities and societies defined themselves. This book was released on 1990 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalogue of 128 paintings produced during this period in which the art of portraiture was transformed, religious imagery dynamized, and new genres such as flower painting were established. The art of Holland's Golden Age is perennially popular with collectors and gallery visitors alike and this book provides a new insight into this unique private collection. In his introduction Ivan Gaskill considers the extremely varied character of Dutch and Flemsih seventeenth century art. It ranges from minutely observed scens of everyday life to portraits, religious works and intimate still-life compositions. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection is especially rich in landscapes, a subject which had emerged as a seperate genre in the Netherlands in the previous century. The author outlines the development of painting on both sides of the border, placing it in its social and historical context, and goes on to discuss the taste for Dutch and Flemish art from the seventeenth century to the present day and spotlights some of the earlier collectors. This detailed catalogue of 128 paintings is the result of meticulous researchin British, Dutch and American libraries and archives. The entries are arranged in ten groups by subject so that thematic similarities can be conveniently examined. Amongst the most celebrated works is Frans Hal's monumental "Family Portrait" - once the most expensive painting in the world. All the paintings are illustrated in colour and are accompanied by comparative illustrations and technical photographs.
