Book excerpt: Woodwind Basics: Core concepts for playing and teaching flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone is a fresh, no-nonsense approach to woodwind technique. It outlines the principles common to playing all of the woodwind instruments, and explains their application to each one.The ideas in this book are critical for woodwind players at all levels, and have been battle-tested in university woodwind methods courses, private studios, and school band halls. Fundamental questions answered with newfound clarity include:- What should I listen for in good woodwind playing?- Why is breath support so important, and how do I do and teach it?- What is voicing? How does it relate to ideas like air speed, air temperature, and vowel shapes?- What things does an embouchure need to accomplish?- How can I (or my students) play better in tune?- What role does the tongue really play in articulation?- Which alternate fingering should I choose in a given situation?- How do I select the best reeds, mouthpieces, and instruments?- How should a beginner choose which instrument is the best fit?Woodwind Basics by Bret Pimentel is the new go-to reference for woodwind players and teachers.

Book Synopsis A Bibliography of Chamber Music and Double Concerti Literature for Oboe and Clarinet by : Anthony J. Costa
Download or read book A Bibliography of Chamber Music and Double Concerti Literature for Oboe and Clarinet written by Anthony J. Costa and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Research on heterogeneous wind duo groupings is rare, even though a representative collection of repertoire exists for several pairing combinations in both chamber music and double concerti. In the case of woodwind chamber music, composers first began writing for Harmonie wind ensembles comprised of two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons and two French horns in the late 1700's. Composers, however, have largely ignored a repertoire featuring the two highest voices of this genre (oboe and the clarinet) as a duo or wind combination paired with strings and/or piano until the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Surprisingly, the instruments were used in conjunction much earlier in the eighteenth century in sinfonia concertantes, double concerti and other orchestral literature. This document will deal with often-neglected chamber works that utilize oboe and clarinet as the sole wind instruments. This repertoire includes works for: 1) oboe and clarinet, 2) oboe and clarinet with piano (including orchestral reductions as noted), 3) oboe and clarinet with one or more string instruments with and without piano, percussion, and voice, and 4) oboe and clarinet as double soloists with orchestra or wind ensemble. This last grouping, while not chamber works, will be addressed as they are closely related to the chamber music repertoire and are sometimes played as such. Compositions utilizing bass clarinet, English horn and other related family members in the aforementioned combinations will also be included. Woodwind trios, quartets, quintets, etc. will not be addressed, as the focus of this paper will be on compositions that use oboe and clarinet (and family members) as their dominant woodwind voices. In addition to listing available repertoire, the following topics will be addressed: 1) the relationship of the oboe and clarinet in the orchestral setting, 2) the growth of the repertoire for this duo combination and the musicians involved and 3) resources for researching obscure chamber music.

Book Synopsis A Clarinet Almanac by : John Macfarlane
Download or read book A Clarinet Almanac written by John Macfarlane and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 60 years’ experience in playing the clarinet has led to a very personal and idiosyncratic review of the repertoire. From the point of view of being both a player and a programmer the author has endeavoured to find works for unusual combinations involving the clarinet. This book includes a few orchestral solos and several vocal works (both chamber and operatic), but it is focussed on chamber music and includes gems from the repertoire for the standard wind quintet. The clarinet features as a solo instrument, in duos with a surprisingly large variety of instruments and in mixed trios, quartets and so on to larger ensembles. During the course of one year the reader will be exposed to 366 works, probably some unfamiliar, by 245 different composers. The author hopes it will whet the appetites of students, teachers and concert organizers alike.
