Up from Under is a detailed and fascinating study of the achievements and aspirations of women at that time. Dann chronicles the upheavals and events of that time, examining developments across the political philosophy of the women’s movement, fertility control, paid and unpaid work, and violence against women. Up from Under is a unique insider’s account of times and changes that have had far-reaching effects on New Zealanders’ lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible and engaging book explores the ways that "space, place, and sex" are inextricably linked from the micro to the macro level, from the individual body to the globe. Drawing on queer, feminist, gender, social, and cultural studies, Lynda Johnston and Robyn Longhurst highlight the complex nature of sex and sexuality and how they are connected to both virtual and physical spaces and places. Their aim is to enrich our understanding of sexual identities and practices--whether they be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, asexual, queer, or heterosexual. They show that bodies are defined and connected through media such as television, movies, ads, and the Internet, as well as through "real" places such as homes, churches, sports arenas, city streets, beaches, and wilderness. Drawing on a diverse array of historical and contemporary examples, the authors argue convincingly that sexual politics permeate all places and spaces at every level of geographical scale. Thus, they illustrate, sexuality affects the way people live in and interact with space and place, as space and place in turn affect people's sexuality.

Book excerpt: Kai Jensen takes a provocative look at masculinity in New Zealand literature. He argues that New Zealand writing around the Second World War was shaped by excitement about masculinity as a way of challenging society. Inspired partly by Marxism, writers such as A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, John Mulgan and Frank Sargeson linked national identity to the ordinary working man or soldier, and attempted to merge artistic activity and manliness in a new ideal, the whole man. This masculine excitement forged a literary and intellectual culture which was powerful for thirty years, and which discouraged women writers. Jensen suggests that the aftermath of masculinism still influences the way New Zealand intellectuals see themselves, and that the masculine tradition survives in the writing of Owen Marshall, Sam Hunt, Maurice Shadbolt and even Maurice Gee. At the same time he argues that masculinism underwent a process of change after its high point in the 1940s: Frank Sargeson's closeted homosexuality posed a complex problem for the masculine tradition and its historians, and James K. Baxter's symbolic, Jungian poetry was also hard to reconcile with the idea that men's writing must be based on robust experience. Yet Baxter prepared the masculine tradition for the 1960s and 1970s by renovating the whole man as bohemian lover. Whole Men is not just about one literary movement, but about how literary culture works, and how New Zealand intellectuals construct their identities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying Anthropology to Gender-Based Violence: Global Responses, Local Practices addresses the gaps in theory, methods, and practices that are currently used to engage the problem of gender-based violence. This book complements the work carried out in the legal, social work, and medical fields by demonstrating how a focus on local issues and local responses can better inform a collaborative global response to the problem of gender-based violence. With chapters covering Africa, Asia, Latin and North America, and Oceania, it provides ample evidence that richly textured and qualitatively informed research can illuminate work that is more quantitative in scope. The volume illustrates the various ways scholars, practitioners, frontline workers, and policy makers can work together to end forms of violence in their local communities. The chapters in this volume demonstrate that the ways top-down responses to violence have been inadequate, and that solutions are available when the local historical, political, and social context is taken into consideration. Applying Anthropology to Gender-Based Violence contains useful insights that, when combined with the efforts of other disciplines, offer solutions to the problem of gender-based violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging from diaries, letters and memoirs, the voices of this remarkable book tell a new story of life arriving amidst a turbulent world. Before the Plunket Society, before antibiotics, before ‘safe’ Caesarean sections and registered midwives, nineteenth-century birthing practice in New Zealand was typically determined by culture, not nature or the state. Alison Clarke works from the heart of this practice, presenting a history balanced in its coverage of social and medical contexts. Connecting these contexts provides new insights into the same debates on childhood – from infant feeding to maternity care – that persist today. Tracing the experiences of Māori and Pākehā birth ways, this richly illustrated story remains centered throughout on birthing women, their babies and families: this is their history.
