Book excerpt: Excerpt from Duke of Marlborough, Vol. 1 of 3: With His Original Correspondence Collected From the Family Records at Blenheim, and Other Authentic Sources The "Memoirs" now republished comprise the history of one of the greatest of England's captains. Marlborough, however, was not only a warrior of the highest class; he was a very eminent statesman, an accomplished courtier, and, above all his contemporaries, a successful and adroit diplomatist. Nature had made him for great affairs: to govern men, win their esteem, and sway their councils. His character had only one drawback; it was too concentrated in purpose, too exclusively intent on his own individual amplification by access of power, wealth, fame, and high connexions; but, contrary to what is usually observed in the self-engrossed, he was capable of a noble friendship, and of a constancy of domestic affection, almost unparalleled, towards one whose wayward spirit often disturbed, and ultimately shipwrecked, his career of grandeur. The times in which the great Marlborough lived and acted a leading part were the most trying in our national progress. It was not a routine age, but a revolutionary era. Public men were placed in irksome dilemmas; dynasties had been changed, or were in transition; absolute and constitutional rule were at issue; Protestantism and Popery in confliet; and the great families of the realm had to make a painful election between the interests of the commonweal and hereditary rights, coupled with long-cherished personal ties and ancient associations. Book excerpt: Osprey's study of the Blenheim campaign, Britiain's defining battle of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714). Combining one of history's most audacious strategic manoeuvres with perhaps the greatest military victory ever won by a British commander, the Blenheim campaign is rightly considered the pinnacle of the career of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. On 13 August 1704, Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy faced a Franco-Bavarian army threatening to knock Austria out of the War of the Spanish Succession. In a hard-fought battle Marlborough won a resounding victory, capturing Marshal Tallard and over 14,000 men. In this book John Tincey describes how Marlborough's victory crushed his enemies, shattered the myth of French invincibility and laid the foundations for two centuries of British world dominance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a great introduction into the history of the British Empire and women who helped to shape it. The book starts with the very first queen in the history of Great Britain, Matilda of Flanders, the wife of William the conqueror, and goes through all the history, mentioning Berengaria of Navarre, the queen of the legendary king Ricard I and all the wives of Henry VIII among the others. The book is aimed at young adults and is written in a simple, understandable, and somewhat naïve manner characteristic of the Victorian-era books for young ladies. Yet, the light and relaxing tone of the book will make it interesting for adults seeking for an entertaining read with educational value. It contains a lot of captivating moments too. For example, the very first story of the book, tells that to win heart of her future queen, William the Conqueror, rolled her in mud and beat her. _x000D_

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prime minister and Nobel Prize–winning historian begins his four-volume biography of the British statesman John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough. In the first volume of this ambitious and stunningly written biography, Sir Winston S. Churchill discusses the early career and stratospheric rise of his illustrious, seventeenth century ancestor. John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough, may have been eclipsed in history by his more well-known descendant, but in his time, Marlborough was considered one of England’s foremost military and political leaders. This first installment pays particular attention to personal details of Marlborough’s life, and the important role several women played in his success—including his sister, his wife, the Duchess of Cleveland, and Queen Anne herself. Churchill breathes life into these personal connections in order to showcase Marlborough not only as a luminary figure in British history, but also to bring him to life once again in the mind of the reader. “A sustained meditation on statecraft and war by the greatest war leader of our time.” —Foreign Affairs “The greatest historical work written in our century, an inexhaustible mine of political wisdom and understanding, which should be required reading for every student of political science.” —Leo Strauss
