Book excerpt: It wasn’t that long ago that dueling was an accepted practice in many parts of the world. In fact, duels were once considered an honorable way to solve a problem. The American navy actually included the Code Duello, the rules for conducting a duel, in its handbook until 1862. Readers are introduced to the special language of dueling and the famous people who participated in duels—or narrowly avoided them—including Andrew Jackson, Edgar Allen Poe, and Alexander Hamilton. Surprising facts are highlighted in sidebars throughout the text, such as the common practice of purposefully shooting away from one’s opponent. Dynamic images and illustrations transport readers back to the days of pistols drawn at dawn.

Book excerpt: The question of what it takes "to be a man" comes under scrutiny in this sharp, often playful, cultural critique of the German duel--the deadliest type of one-on-one combat in fin-de-siécle Europe. At a time when dueling was generally restricted to swords or had been abolished altogether in other nations, the custom of fighting to the death with pistols flourished among Germany's upper-class males, who took perverse comfort in defying their country's weakly enforced laws. From initial provocation to final death agony, Kevin McAleer describes with ironic humor the complex protocol of the German duel, inviting his reader into the disturbing mindset of its practitioners and the society that valued this socially important but ultimately absurd pastime. Through a narrative that cannot restrain itself from poking fun at the egos and prejudices that come to the fore in the pursuit of "manliness," McAleer offers both an entertaining and thought-provoking portrait of a cultural phenomenon that had far-reaching effects. The author employs a wealth of anecdotes to re-create the dueling event in all its variety, from the level of insult--which could range from loudly ridiculing a man's choice of entrée in an upscale restaurant to, more commonly, bedding his wife--to such intricacies as the time and place of the duel, the guest list, the selection of weapons and number of paces, dress options, and the decision regarding when to let the attending physician set up his instruments on the field. As he exposes the reader to the fierce mentality behind these proceedings, McAleer describes the duel as a litmus test of courage, the masculine apotheosis, which led its male practitioners to lay claim to both psychic and legal entitlements in Wilhelmine society. The aristocratic nature of the duel, with its feudal ethos of chivalry, gave its upper-middle-class practitioners even more opportunity to distinguish themselves from the underclasses and other marginalized groups--such as Socialists, Jews, left-liberals, Catholics, and pacifists, who, for various reasons, were stigmatized as incapable of "giving satisfaction." The duel, according to McAleer, was thus a social mirror, and the dueling issue political dynamite. Throughout these accounts, the author sustains a personal voice to convey the horror and fascination of what at first appears to be simply a curious fringe activity, but which he goes on to reveal as an integral element of German society's consciousness in the late nineteenth century. In so doing, he strengthens the argument that Germany followed a path of development separate from the rest of Europe, leading to World War I and ultimately to Hitler and the Nazis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though no landmarks or memorials formally recognize dueling in Charleston, it remains a quintessential element of the Holy City's legacy. Most upstanding locals nourished the duelist's tradition, many going so far as to make it an integral part of their social lives. For a time, even the most casual character insults or slurs toward one's moral fiber or family lineage invited a challenge, and almost always, the offended party was expected to retaliate. Thus, finding full expression in frequency and public acceptance throughout the Lowcountry, a gentleman's duel was a crucial--albeit deadly--matter of taste and caste. For two centuries, Charlestonians dueled habitually, settling personal grievances with malice instead of mediation. Charleston historian J. Grahame Long presents a charming portrait of this dreadfully civilized custom.

Book excerpt: Cale Cawthorn is one of twelve mages tasked with protecting Princess Ameria. Like his guildmates, he wasn't prepared to care for a toddler for a month. Especially not at his home in literal hell. Granted it's a safe space, but he needs help and who better than his best friend Turak. Turak couldn't believe Cale had seven months to prepare for the arrival of Ameria and he did nothing. He could have read a book at the very least, but the mage was too stubborn. Thankfully he had a demon at his side to help. Together they could handle anything that came their way... right? Marek felt like he'd spent all his time watching Cale and Turak from a distance. Their friendship intrigued him, their flirting amused him. Until Princess Ameria arrived and he couldn't sit back and watch anymore. The men needed help and it was his duty to be of assistance.

Book excerpt: A serious and visionary talent, Arion has no time for toddlers. But as part of the Nightshade Guild, he won’t refuse the council’s call to protect the orphaned Princess Ameria. As winter solstice approaches, this leather-clad magical musician becomes her twelfth temporary guardian despite the fact that he doesn’t have a full grasp of his own powers or any experience changing diapers. Protecting a pint-sized princess leaves very little time for promoting his alt-rock music and touring the indie club scene throughout Europe. And it seems the only gift he has for babysitting is entertaining little Ameria with his musical spells and charms. Though it's good fun for her and great practice for him, he's desperate for his month to be over, and none too happy when a groupie named Liv insists she can help. He’s not one to trust, but Liv slides right into his life, almost like she belongs. And that bothers him. Can they work together to finally end the princess’s long year on the run? Or will December be the month the world loses a kingdom?

Book excerpt: Helpless was not a feeling Charlie was used to having to deal with, but that was exactly how she felt now that her powers had been zapped from her. It was the same for the rest of the mages of the Nightshade Guild as well. Now all she could think about was doing all she could to get their powers back, no matter the cost. The Time Scythe, an ancient artifact created by one of the most powerful Elvin crafters and blacksmiths, called to her. It was trying to tell her something, but what she wasn’t sure. Maybe if she could find it, she would also find the answers to her questions. The problem was, she wasn’t the only one looking for it. Hack, Charlie’s absentee father, was also out to find it, and she was all too aware what would happen if he got his hands on it first. The scythe in the hands of anyone could be dangerous; the scythe in the hands of someone power hungry and working with the enemy could be catastrophic. Now, with time running out, Charlie had other obstacles in her way. Her life was changing faster than she was ready for, and there was no way to stop it. She was going to have to learn how to fight without her magic in order help the Nightshade Guild find clues to get their magic restored.
