Book Synopsis Birth in Babylonia and the Bible by : Stol
Download or read book Birth in Babylonia and the Bible written by Stol and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilising material spanning 3000 years, this book examines childbirth in the Biblical and Babylonian world. Stol's scholarship has an extraordinary range. He follows the mother and child from conception to weaning, analyzing a variety of different texts and topics. He deals, for example, with the vicissitudes and procedures of labor and delivery, delivery with magical plants and amulets, and with legal issues relating to abortion or to the liability of the wet-nurse. Many of the texts are rich and distinctive. Babylonian incantations to facilitate birth describe the child moving "over the dark sea" and, like a ship, reaching "the quay of life". His discussions are supplemented with relevant examples drawn from Greek and Roman sources, Rabbinic literature, and modern ethnographic material from traditional Middle Eastern societies. The last chapter, written by F.A.M. Wiggermann, deals with the horrible baby-snatching demon, Lamastum. This book is a fully re-worked edition of a volume originally written in Dutch (1983). Both authors teach at the Free University (Amsterdam).

Book Synopsis Reconfiguring the Fifteenth-Century Crusade by : Norman Housley
Download or read book Reconfiguring the Fifteenth-Century Crusade written by Norman Housley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by eight leading scholars is a landmark event in the study of crusading in the late middle ages. It is the outcome of an international network funded by the Leverhulme Trust whose members examined the persistence of crusading activity in the fifteenth century from three viewpoints, goals, agencies and resonances. The crusading fronts considered include the conflict with the Ottoman Turks in the Mediterranean and western Balkans, the Teutonic Order’s activities in the Baltic region, and the Hussite crusades. The authors review criticism of crusading propaganda on behalf of the crusade, the influence on crusading of demands for Church reform, the impact of printing, expanding knowledge of the world beyond the Christian lands, and new sensibilities about the sufferings of non-combatants.
Book Synopsis Theories of Race and Racism by : Les Back
Download or read book Theories of Race and Racism written by Les Back and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theories of Race and Racism: A Reader is an important and innovative collection that brings together extracts from the work of scholars, both established and up and coming, who have helped to shape the study of race and racism as an historical and contemporary phenomenon. This second edition incorporates new contributions and editorial material and allows readers to explore the changing terms of debates about the nature of race and racism in contemporary societies. All six parts are organized around the contributions made by theorists whose work has been influential in shaping theoretical debates. The various contributions have been chosen to reflect different theoretical perspectives and to help readers gain a feel for the changing terms of theoretical debate over time. As well as covering the main concerns of past and recent theoretical debates it provides a glimpse of relatively new areas of interest that are likely to attract more attention in years to come.
Book Synopsis The Force of Prejudice by : Pierre-André Taguieff
Download or read book The Force of Prejudice written by Pierre-André Taguieff and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre-Andr Taguieff puts forward a powerful thesis: that racism has evolved from an argument about races, naturalizing inequality between "biologically" defined groups on the basis of fear of the other, to an argument about cultures, naturalizing historical differences and justifying exclusion. Correspondingly, Taguieff shows how antiracism must adopt the strategy that fits the variety of racism it opposes. Already viewed as an essential work of reference in France, The Force of Prejudice is an invaluable tool for identifying and understanding both racism and its antidote in our day

Book Synopsis Décision et Action by : POMEROL Jean-Charles
Download or read book Décision et Action written by POMEROL Jean-Charles and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
