Book excerpt: The book examines the history of abortion and contraception in Modern Greece from the time of its creation in the 1830s to 1967, soon after the Pill became available. It situates the history of abortion and contraception within the historiography of the fertility decline and the question of whether the decline was due to adjustment to changing social conditions or innovation of contraceptive methods. The study reveals that all methods had been in use for other purposes before they were employed as contraceptives. For example, Greek women were employing emmenagogues well before fertility was controlled; they did so in order to ‘put themselves right’ and to enhance their fertility. When they needed to control their fertility, they employed abortifacients, some of which were also emmenagogues, while others had been used as expellants in earlier times. Curettage was also employed since the late nineteenth century as a cure for sterility; once couples desired to control their fertility curettage was employed to procure abortion. Thus couples did not need to innovate but rather had to repurpose old methods and materials to new birth control methods. Furthermore, the role of physicians was found to have been central in advising and encouraging the use of birth control for ‘health’ reasons, thus facilitating and speeding fertility decline in Greece. All this occurred against the backdrop of a state and a church that were at times neutral and at other times disapproving of fertility control.

The authors’ use of the term super resolution (SR) is used to describe the process of obtaining a high resolution (HR) image, or a sequence of HR images, from a set of low resolution (LR) observations. This process has also been referred to in the literature as resolution enhancement (RE). SR has been applied primarily to spatial and temporal RE, but also to hyperspectral image enhancement. This book concentrates on motion based spatial RE, although the authors also describe motion free and hyperspectral image SR problems. Also examined is the very recent research area of SR for compression, which consists of the intentional downsampling, during pre-processing, of a video sequence to be compressed and the application of SR techniques, during post-processing, on the compressed sequence. It is clear that there is a strong interplay between the tools and techniques developed for SR and a number of other inverse problems encountered in signal processing (e.g., image restoration, motion estimation). SR techniques are being applied to a variety of fields, such as obtaining improved still images from video sequences (video printing), high definition television, high performance color Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens, improvement of the quality of color images taken by one CCD, video surveillance, remote sensing, and medical imaging. The authors believe that the SR/RE area has matured enough to develop a body of knowledge that can now start to provide useful and practical solutions to challenging real problems and that SR techniques can be an integral part of an image and video codec and can drive the development of new coder-decoders (codecs) and standards.

These blurs might be caused by optical distortions, object motion during imaging, or atmospheric turbulence. In many scientific and en gineering applications, such as aerial imaging, remote sensing, electron microscopy, and medical imaging, there is active or potential work in image restoration. The purpose of this book is to provide in-depth treatment of some recent ad vances in the field of image restoration. A survey of the field is provided in the introduction. Recent research results are presented, regarding the formulation of the restoration problem as a convex programming problem, the implementation of restoration algorithms using artificial neural networks, the derivation of non stationary image models (compound random fields) and their application to image estimation and restoration, the development of algorithms for the simultaneous image and blur parameter identification and restoration, and the development of algorithms for restoring scanned photographic images. Special attention is directed to issues of numerical implementation. A large number of pictures demonstrate the performance of the restoration approaches. This book provides a clear understanding of the past achievements, a detailed description of the very important recent developments and the limitations of existing approaches, in the rapidly growing field of image restoration. Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing questions in image processing is the problem of recovering the desired or perfect image from a degraded version. In many instances one has the feeling that the degradations in the image are such that relevant information is close to being recognizable, if only the image could be sharpened just a little. This monograph discusses the two essential steps by which this can be achieved, namely the topics of image identification and restoration. More specifically the goal of image identifi cation is to estimate the properties of the imperfect imaging system (blur) from the observed degraded image, together with some (statistical) char acteristics of the noise and the original (uncorrupted) image. On the basis of these properties the image restoration process computes an estimate of the original image. Although there are many textbooks addressing the image identification and restoration problem in a general image processing setting, there are hardly any texts which give an indepth treatment of the state-of-the-art in this field. This monograph discusses iterative procedures for identifying and restoring images which have been degraded by a linear spatially invari ant blur and additive white observation noise. As opposed to non-iterative methods, iterative schemes are able to solve the image restoration problem when formulated as a constrained and spatially variant optimization prob In this way restoration results can be obtained which outperform the lem. results of conventional restoration filters.
