Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of urology is changing from one based around surgery, to an outpatient system, concentrating mainly on medical mana- ment. Last year, in the UK, there were almost two million hospital consultations for urological symptoms and an estimated fve million consultations in general practice. With such a signifcant proportion of care being delivered for urology, 80% of which can be managed medically, we felt that a resource should be made available to providers that will serve as a quick and useful guide to the medical management of urological disease. The aim was to provide a fresh, practical, and concise overview of the key medical management issues every practicing clinician faces in an outpatient urology setting, on a daily basis. With these goals in mind, each chapter starts with a brief overview of the relevant anatomy/physiology and pathology of the condition in question, and then goes on to give an explanation of the drugs used, including mode of action, doses, side effects, and important interactions/contraindications. Finally, there is a brief but relevant section on review of medical literature and a clinical section on when a particular drug treatment should be used. A list of key points can be found at the end of each section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interface between the urologist and other disciplines in medicine continues to increase as the character of urology continues to change. Urologists have, for example, developed strong links with microbiol ogists over mutual problems of infection in the urinary tract, urolog ists have been involved in the development of modern management of renal disease and especially renal failure, indeed even before the subject of nephrology had been defined. Similarly the links between endocrinology and infertility and more recently links between imaging and urology have led to the mutual benefit of these subjects and certainly to better patient care. The Pharmacology of the urinary tract has proved to be a difficult area of study. Slowly but progressively it has become evident that this is an area of great potential for urologists. Our patients have a range of problems where non-surgical management would be ideal but finding the right drug for the right condition has remained an elusive task. Many of the earlier trials showed an impressive placebo response rate and emphasised the need for well planned controlled clinical trials. The place of such trials in the evaluation of new treatments for urinary symptoms is now unchallenged and uncon trolled data are of little value. This book represents a skillful combination of background infor mation and its clinical application. The review of the pharmacokine tics of the various groups of drugs provides a very useful background to both the use of current drugs and also the prospects for the future.

Book excerpt: Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) for Prostate/Urologic Health is designed to capture and clinically review the comprehensive database of clinical research articles that support and do not support the utilization of a variety of dietary supplements and other complementary medicines that physicians are exposed to in their daily practice. This is a critical distinction between this book and any other CAM Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Prostate and Urologic Health is designed to capture and clinically review the comprehensive database of clinical research articles that support and do not support the utilization of a variety of dietary supplements and other complementary medicines that physicians are exposed to in their daily practice. This is a critical distinction between this book and any other Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) books published to date. Each section of the book provides an easy to reference guide into the topic of interest for the individual that works in urology. The various sub-specialty groups in urology are adequately represented, which allows for a physician to rapidly and thoroughly investigate their topic of interest regardless of whether it is fertility, bladder cancer, or prostate disease. Rather than having to sort through the now thousands of articles published yearly on CAM in medicine, this volume focuses first on the specialty and secondarily how it compares to the overall CAM literature. Each chapter includes a summary page that will allow the physician a rapid review of the subject with a patient, colleague or student. The practical nature of this book in urology also cannot be overstated. Chapters include a general overview of the CAM agent, whether or not it has data in medicine and urology, and a list of potential drug interactions and specific clinical scenarios where it can be utilized or discouraged in the specialty. Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Prostate and Urologic Health represents a gold standard text for use in teaching, not only for the students interested in the urologic field but for all current urologic health providers.
