Book Synopsis Neuroendocrine Regulation and Altered Behaviour by : Pavel D. Hrdina
Download or read book Neuroendocrine Regulation and Altered Behaviour written by Pavel D. Hrdina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ill recent years, it has become clearly recognized that many behavioural disturb ances and psychiatric illnesses are intimately associated with alterations in neuroendocrine function. This volume is designed to provide a thorough, up-to date review of our current knowledge of the neuroendocrine correlates of altered behaviour in man and experimental animals. Particular emphasis has been focused on the mechanisms which may underlie the coupling of mental functions with endocrine changes and the possible common links in the central regulation of both endocrine and psychic activities. One of the main objectives of this book is to consider both the experimental and clinical approaches in studying the interrelationship between neuroendocrine regulation and altered behaviour, and to assess its importance in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. The book has been organized into four major sections which focus on: (i) the role of pituitary hormones in the regulation of CNS function; (ii) the relationship between brain endorphin systems, psychotropic drugs and neuroendocrine regulation; (iii) the importance of neuroendocrine regulation in the pathogenesis of mental disorders; and (iv) biological markers of altered mental function. Each chapter is organized for ease of comprehension as well as for rapid retrieval of progress and essential information concerning the neuroendocrine basis of altered behaviour and psychiatric illnesses. The contributing authors were selected because of their widely recognized expertise in the field.
Book Synopsis The Reproductive Neuroendocrinology of Aging and Drug Abuse by : Charles D. Barnes
Download or read book The Reproductive Neuroendocrinology of Aging and Drug Abuse written by Charles D. Barnes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-11-22 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The communication between the hypothalamus, pituitary, and gonad is bi-directional, and alterations of the communication in the circuitry, as often occurs during aging and drug abuse, results in acyclicity, hypogonadism, and impotence. This important reference covers topics on the neuroendocrine control mechanisms governing the reproductive process in both males and females. It discusses the importance of the differentiation of the neuroendocrine brain during the developmental period for the normal reproductive process. It also summarizes the effects of prenatal drug abuse on the differentiation of the neuroendocrine brain development and how this alteration induces abnormalities in the reproduction process. This comprehensive volume compares the effects of various psycoactive drugs on the maintenance of reproduction and describes the changes in the reproductive neurendocrine axis during aging.

Book Synopsis Principles of Endocrine Pharmacology by : John A. Thomas
Download or read book Principles of Endocrine Pharmacology written by John A. Thomas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have provided an overview of the relationships between hormones that are physiologic constituents of the body as well as their pharmacologic use in replacement therapies and related endocrine dys function. Principles of Endocrine Pharmacology concerns itself with the ther apeutic use of hormones, and hormone like substances, or drugs that can act either by suppressing or enhancing the metabolism of certain glands of internal secretion. Other drugs used for nonendocrine ther apies can likewise affect the endocrine system. Endocrine pharmacology emerged in the early 1900s with the use of crude pituitary extracts. By the mid-1900s several investigators had isolated and begun to synthesize hormones or hormonelike substances. Recognizing the limited supply of hormones that could be obtained both from animal sources and human autopsy material, the search for so called hormone substitutes also began early in the 1900s. Recently, re combinant DNA technologies have been used to provide alternative therapeutic sources of human insulin and human growth hormone. Aside from insulin, perhaps no other use of hormonally-active sub stance is better exemplified by those drugs which affect fertility. The synthesis of an orally-effective steroid represented one of the first major breakthroughs in the chemical suppression of ovulation. Since the orally active 19-norsteroids were introduced in the 1950s, several oral contra ceptive steroid preparations have been marketed. Indeed, the advent of oral contraceptives for birth control has led to a renewed interest in endocrine pharmacology.
