Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, International Islamic University Malaysia, course: LE 4000 English for Academic Writing, language: English, abstract: Since ancient times, people have faced the necessity to transport goods or merchandizes or mail from one location to another. In almost every part of the world, runners were used by the rulers to convey their messages even before the time it was documented that postal services existed that dates to 255 BC. To fulfill their delivery needs, people came up with different solutions such as using animals for delivery purpose and later structured delivery services were introduced. Blake (2010) stated that in the UK, King Henry VII appointed the position "Master of the Posts" and that eventually became the office of the Postmaster General for The Royal Mail back in 1516. But long gone are the days where mediocre technologies or tools were used for delivery purposes. In this modern era, we have many sophisticated delivery services that are using modern day inventions like airplanes, delivery trucks, cargo ships and others. But to take things even further, little mechanical gremlins, drones, is gaining massive popularity to take charge of the delivery system.

Book excerpt: Given the popularity of drones and the fact that they are easy and cheap to buy, it is generally expected that the ubiquity of drones will significantly increase within the next few years. This raises questions as to what is technologically feasible (now and in the future), what is acceptable from an ethical point of view and what is allowed from a legal point of view. Drone technology is to some extent already available and to some extent still in development. The aim and scope of this book is to map the opportunities and threats associated with the use of drones and to discuss the ethical and legal issues of the use of drones. This book provides an overview of current drone technologies and applications and of what to expect in the next few years. The question of how to regulate the use of drones in the future is addressed, by considering conditions and contents of future drone legislation and by analyzing issues surrounding privacy and safeguards that can be taken. As such, this book is valuable to scholars in several disciplines, such as law, ethics, sociology, politics and public administration, as well as to practitioners and others who may be confronted with the use of drones in their work, such as professionals working in the military, law enforcement, disaster management and infrastructure management. Individuals and businesses with a specific interest in drone use may also find in the nineteen contributions contained in this volume unexpected perspectives on this new field of research and innovation. Bart Custers is Associate Professor and Head of Research at eLaw, the Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University, The Netherlands. He has presented his work at international conferences in the United States, China, Japan, the Middle East and throughout Europe and has published over 80 scientific, professional and popularizing publications, including three books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with a payload capacity of one metric ton for transportation. The authors provide a large variety of perspectives–from economics to technical realization. With the focus on such heavy-lift cargo UAS, the authors consider recently established methods for approval and certification, which they expect to be disruptive for unmanned aviation. In particular, the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) and its impact on the presented technological solutions and operational concepts are studied. Starting with the assumption of an operation over sparsely populated areas and below common air traffic, diverse measures to further reduce operational risks are proposed. Operational concepts derived from logistics use-cases set the context for an in-depth analysis including aircraft and system design, safe autonomy as well as airspace integration and datalinks. Results from simulations and technology demonstrations are presented as a proof of concept for solutions proposed in this book.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Robotics, , language: English, abstract: The Department of Transportation recently announced that it intends to impose a registration system for drones (LINK 1). Drones (scientific name unmanned aerial vehicles) are aircraft that do not need a human pilot on board. Their flight is monitored remotely from the ground or via computers embedded on the vehicle. Previously restricted to military operations, these vehicles are increasingly finding applications in the civilian world—firefighting, policing, commerce, research and monitoring etc. According to the secretary, registration will stress the need for drone operators and hobbyists to observe safe flight practices and apply airspace rules (LINK 2). This announcement is a clear indication of just how profound drones are influencing and will continue to impact our lives. In this article, I present ten ways through which drones are shaping our future.

Book excerpt: In the battle for the streets of Mosul in Iraq, drones in the hands of ISIS terrorists made life hell for the Iraq army and civilians. Today, defense companies are racing to develop the lasers, microwave weapons, and technology necessary for confronting the next drone threat. Seth J. Frantzman takes the reader from the midnight exercises with Israel’s elite drone warriors, to the CIA headquarters where new drone technology was once adopted in the 1990s to hunt Osama bin Laden. This rapidly expanding technology could be used to target nuclear power plants and pose a threat to civilian airports. In the Middle East, the US used a drone to kill Iranian arch-terrorist Qasem Soleimani, a key Iranian commander. Drones are transforming the battlefield from Syria to Libya and Yemen. For militaries and security agencies—the main users of expensive drones—the UAV market is expanding as well; there were more than 20,000 military drones in use by 2020. Once the province of only a few militaries, drones now being built in Turkey, China, Russia, and smaller countries like Taiwan may be joining the military drone market. It’s big business, too—$100 billion will be spent over the next decade on drones. Militaries may soon be spending more on drones than tanks, much as navies transitioned away from giant vulnerable battleships to more agile ships. The future wars will be fought with drones and won by whoever has the most sophisticated technology.
