Book Synopsis The Rhine Crossing by : Patrick Henry Timothy
Download or read book The Rhine Crossing written by Patrick Henry Timothy and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rhine Crossing, which was almost completely an "engineer show," is an excellent illustration of the work of our engineers in Europe. With the possible exception of the Normandy beaches, the Rhine River presented the most formidable natural obstacle in western Europe. From the standpoint of troops and equipment involved, the assault crossing of the Rhine was the largest military operation in history. It is questionable whether the vast extent and scope of the engineer studies and plans prepared in connection with an operation of this magnitude will ever be adequately described. This pamphlet attempts only to outline the work of the engineers of the Twelfth Army Group in preparation for the Rhine crossing, and to indicate the major accomplishments during the actual operation. However, an operation of such gigantic proportions could not have been successful without full cooperation from all arms and services. Emphasis will also be placed on the unique features of this undertaking. For instance, the idea of employing the Navy on the Rhine was conceived by engineers of the Twelfth Army Group and for the first time in history a part of our Navy was transported several hundred miles overland and launched on an inland waterway to support a river crossing. Contents include the situation, problem, preparation, and the actual crossing. -- Abstract.

Book Synopsis Fall of the Sultanate by : Ryan Gingeras
Download or read book Fall of the Sultanate written by Ryan Gingeras and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the Ottoman Empire was by no means a singular event. After six hundred years of ruling over the peoples of North Africa, the Balkans and Middle East, the death throes of sultanate encompassed a series of wars, insurrections, and revolutions spanning the early twentieth century. This volume encompasses a full accounting of the political, economic, social, and international forces that brought about the passing of the Ottoman state. In surveying the many tragedies that transpired in the years between 1908 and 1922, Fall of the Sultanate explores the causes that eventuallyled so many to view the legacy of the Ottomans with loathing and resentment. The volume provides a retelling of this critical history as seen through the eyes of those who lived through the Ottoman collapse. Drawing upon a large gamut of sources in multiple languages, Ryan Gingeras strikes a critical balance in presenting and interpreting the most impactful experiences thatshaped the lives of the empire's last generation. The story presented here takes into account the perspectives of the empire's diverse population as well as the leaders who piloted the state to its end. In surveying the personal, communal and national struggles that defined Italy's invasion ofLibya, the Balkan War, the Great War, and the Turkish War of Independence, Fall of the Sultanate presents readers with a fresh and comprehensive exposition of how and why Ottoman imperial rule ended in bloodshed and disillusionment.
Book Synopsis The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I (1) by : Peter Jung
Download or read book The Austro-Hungarian Forces in World War I (1) written by Peter Jung and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The part played in World War I (1914-1918) by the army of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy is little known to English-speakers, perhaps because the end of the war saw the complete destruction of the Empire. Yet it was of central importance, providing nearly all Central Powers forces on the Italian front, huge numbers on the Russian front, seven Army Corps in the Balkans – and even a little-known contingent in Turkey and Palestine. The first half of the story of this complex multi-national organization at war is described here in a concise but detailed text, supported by data tables and an insignia chart, and illustrated with rare photographs and colourful uniform plates.
