But in Drip’s case, Drop finds that he has to look after more because Drip can be a bit of a drip at times. Drip and Drop have decided to go on holiday as they want to visit their cousins, Splish and Splash, as they haven’t seen them for a while now. Along the way, Drip and Drop meet different gargoyles, such as the hedge gargoyle and the giant sea gargoyle, with its big booming voice, and not forgetting dear Sandy the sand gargoyle, who is rude too. They also meet Mrs Damselfly and her husband, Mr Dragonfly, along the way, as well as visit a pub with Chris and David, who own the Hastings that Drip and Drop travel on part of the way. Whilst on holiday, Drip and Drop explore the seabed, coming across a Hurricane and a Spitfire that have coral growing over them as well as hearing about the haunted forest from Mrs Owl, and learning the names of the three ghosts that live there and of course, of Uncle Dippy Wippy. Children of all ages will enjoy this book, especially when reading it with their parents, or grandparents, as I’m sure it will fill you with delight and laughter, as I tell you more about Drip and Drop the water gargoyles.

Book excerpt: Welcome to An American Story. This will probably be different than books you’re accustomed to. This book has a beginning and an end, but you’ll also be constantly entertained by jugglers, clowns, singers, thespians, and sages. At times it may feel confusing and disjointed, but rest assured that every facet has been included for a reason. Nothing is arbitrary. In a nutshell, this story is about a man named Huey Baker. It is his story, and it is not meant to represent any specific sexual gender, economic class, race, religion, weight, hair color, or political persuasion. Huey is just one of 370 million citizens who was born and raised in America. So how does one read this novel? Expectations will only let you down, so don’t search for anything specific. Just pour a cup of coffee, keep an open mind, and enjoy the show.

A mate could have reversed the process, but now it’s too late. To protect his team of enforcers, he leaves, and comes face to face with the woman he’d thought was human when he saved her from a fire months before. Except she’s not human. She’s a mate. Camilla Carrillo almost lost her family to wildfire. To discover she’s fated to mate a creature made of flame and rage, and become one herself, should be terrifying. But somehow a rightness settles inside her, especially when she’s around the glowering red dragon shifter who wants nothing to do with her. When Drake learns Cami bears his mark—the same mark as the High King—he refuses to believe she’s meant to be his. It’s too late. How could he turn Cami only to take her with him to the grave? At the same time, he can’t walk away. Hiding her from the corrupt, rotting High King might be the last honorable thing Drake ever does with the little time he has left. Each book in the Fire's Edge series is STANDALONE: * The Mate (prequel) * The Boss * The Rookie * The Enforcer * The Protector

Book Synopsis An American Cakewalk by : Zeese Papanikolas
Download or read book An American Cakewalk written by Zeese Papanikolas and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The profound economic and social changes in the post-Civil War United States created new challenges to a nation founded on Enlightenment and transcendental values, religious certainties, and rural traditions. Newly-freed African Americans, emboldened women, intellectuals and artists, and a polyglot tide of immigrants found themselves in a restless new world of railroads, factories, and skyscrapers where old assumptions were being challenged and new values had yet to be created. In An American Cakewalk: Ten Syncopators of the Modern World, Zeese Papanikolas tells the lively and entertaining story of a diverse group of figures in the arts and sciences who inhabited this new America. Just as ragtime composers subverted musical expectations by combining European march timing with African syncopation, so this book's protagonists—who range from Emily Dickinson to Thorstein Veblen and from Henry and William James to Charles Mingus—interrogated the modern American world through their own "syncopations" of cultural givens. The old antebellum slave dance, the cakewalk, with its parody of the manners and pretensions of the white folks in the Big House, provides a template of how the tricksters, shamans, poets, philosophers, ragtime pianists, and jazz musicians who inhabit this book used the arts of parody, satire, and disguise to subvert American cultural norms and to create new works of astonishing beauty and intellectual vigor.
