Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 6, 1537, Lorenzino de’ Medici murdered Alessandro de’ Medici, the duke of Florence. This episode is significant in literature and drama, in Florentine history, and in the history of republican thought, because Lorenzino, a classical scholar, fashioned himself after Brutus as a republican tyrant-slayer. Wings for Our Courage offers an epistemological critique of this republican politics, its invisible oppressions, and its power by reorganizing the meaning of Lorenzino’s assassination around issues of gender, the body, and political subjectivity. Stephanie H. Jed brings into brilliant conversation figures including the Venetian nun and political theorist Archangela Tarabotti, the French feminist writer Hortense Allart, and others in a study that closely examines the material bases—manuscripts, letters, books, archives, and bodies—of writing as generators of social relations that organize and conserve knowledge in particular political arrangements. In her highly original study Jed reorganizes republicanism in history, providing a new theoretical framework for understanding the work of the scholar and the social structures of archives, libraries, and erudition in which she is inscribed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicatrices offers an understanding of the current mood in Central American fiction as writers attempt to come to terms with a collapsing social, political and economic landscape dominated by forced migration, drug trafficking, corruption and the struggle to establish fully democratic societies. Writers adopt various narrative strategies to account for this in fictional form, most typically the crime novel cum critical realism and the political thriller, but also a kind of impressionist realism as well as auto-fiction and fictional testimony. Thematic unity is provided by displacement in all its guises and the inability to leave behind a problematic past that bleeds into the present scars that wont heal. This fiction speaks of existential crisis in a context of social precarity and lack of opportunity, a legacy of civil war and neoliberal adjustment, as Central Americans seek fulfillment through migration and nomadism. Whether external or internal, self-imposed or forced, migration brings in train mal-adaptation to new worlds and a poetics of loss and solitude. An atmosphere of survival, exhaustion, dissipation and decay (in both a physical and a moral sense) dominates, but also rays of hope a sober reckoning the morning after. Cicatrices is a mix of young and older, male and female, authors of novels and short stories, spread across five Central American countries: Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Honduras. Cicatrices is an essential collection for any reader wishing to get a sense of the direction and quality of current Central American fiction as it engages with the problems of the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audiences never have a lukewarm opinion of a Subiela film. They either love it passionately or hate it profoundly. That Eliseo Subiela (Buenos Aires, 1944-2016), an original and sensitive thinker, survived, and indeed throve in economically challenged Argentina while garnering more accolades abroad than in his own country, is a tribute to his grit, intelligence, imagination and persistence of vision. With an astounding list of prizes and honors, he was a world-class auteur. Even when he was making a TV commercial, his surreal style and poetic sensibility were unmistakable. This book represents the culmination of 20 years of research and personal correspondence with Eliseo Subiela. Through ten scholarly studies and five interviews, it sheds light on his life, esthetics, obsessions, struggles with madness, and, of course, his films. It addresses his earlier career in advertising, lifelong artistic influences, screenwriting techniques, critical reactions to his films, and what Subiela's example has to offer aspiring filmmakers, especially those in Latin America.

Book excerpt: How do fashions in drinks work, and how are drinks fashions related to changing trends in clothes and apparel? These twin questions are posed and answered by the book Drinks in Vogue. Taking a radically cross-disciplinary set of perspectives and ranging far and wide across time and space, the book considers beverages as varied as cocktails, wine, Champagne, craft beer, coffee, and mineral water. The contributors present rich case materials which illuminate key conceptual issues about how fashion dynamics work both within and across the worlds of beverages and clothes. Covering both contemporary and historical cases and drawing upon perspectives in disciplines including sociology, history, and geography, among others, the book sets out a novel research programme that intersects fashion studies with food and drinks studies.
