With a fiancé out for blood, a bodyguard as wild as he is wolf and a dreamy detective on her trail, Megan is unnerved and deeply conflicted. Book excerpt: Following a string of murders, an unraveling company, and whispers of a dollmaker, will Vallan survive the socially engineered environment? Graduating from The Fashion Academy, Slay couldn't wait to join Onyx, the wealthiest, most admired company in the world. Born on Vallan Isle, Onyx is a way of life and design is the envy of the social tiers where every frame represents a person's worth. When a socialite is found brutally mutilated, suspicion falls on Onyx and the peculiar chain of operations that associates are required to follow. Dismayed by her assigned location- the Recycle Bin- where old, dismembered oModels are sent to be sorted and discarded, Slay begins to notice that Onyx isn't the environmentally conscious enterprise that it claims to be. Soon she stumbles upon a splintered frame and is spooked by the unusual sensation that follows, leading her to question the recent events. As the peculiar incidents continue, threads of evil taint the studios of Onyx one stitch at a time, leaving followers to wonder if a threat looms over the isle. MISS MANNEQUIN features a passionate but unlucky recruit who gets tangled in the web of Onyx while trying to survive a ninety story fall. This story is intriguing from the very beginning, designed to engage the reader with each page turn, and tailored to entertain. Set on an island of dark sands, a killer has slipped through the threads to become one of them until revealing its true colors. Escape the daily chaos and delve into a tale about murder, a cryptic program, and a sea of dismembered limbs.

It was a street that, depending on which direction you were going, led you to heaven or to hell. At the time, I didn't have the fortitude to tell that as a disciple of the Lord, down on the corner is exactly where he needed to be - slinging scriptures as the dope boys slung rocks. I disobeyed my father's commandment and followed my heart... a decision that, indeed, led me to hell.

Book excerpt: Freelance magazine writer Cydney Williams is excited to review a new restaurant that's helping to revitalize her hardscrabble New Jersey hometown, especially when she meets the owner. Restaurateur Desmond Rucker is as delicious and seductive as the rich desserts created in his kitchen, and the instant connection between them feels right and real. Too bad not everyone is happy about it. Cydney has worked hard to get ahead at college and at her job, but she's worked hardest of all to keep her family from shattering what she's so carefully built. Cydney loves her Momma, no question, but watching the once beautiful and vibrant Nan Williams sink deeper and deeper into addiction is more than she can bear. Cydney's brother, Shammond Slay, is another story. Handsome, charismatic Shammond was once a promising athlete. Now he's living a lavish lifestyle with no visible means of support…and whatever is behind it can't be legal. To Cydney, her brother is two different people: protective, generous Shammond, and destructive street-thug Slay. Like Cydney, he's a damaged soul, but unlike his sister, he's not willing to let go of his bitterness, or his family. And now, with everything Cydney cares about on the line, she'll have to face secrets, betrayals and the consequences of her own choices before she can claim the new life and sweet love she's always wanted….

Book excerpt: Young and full of life, Cassandra Parker wouldn’t have it any other way but to hang out and party with her girls and be boo’d up with her boyfriend, Tommy. But all that changed when she had a spiritual encounter with God himself. What most people would find to be the most joyous time of their lives, Cassie struggled with the people she loved leaving her one by one, including the man she thought she’d spend the rest of her life with. Trying to see if her relationship with Tommy could survive the test of time, Tommy couldn’t get used to the scene of Cassie’s new-found love in Jesus Christ. Vowing to hold on to her celibacy, keeping God number one in her life and waiting for a true man of God, revelation took her by surprise. What Cassie thought would be a skip, a hop, and a jump when God told her who her husband was turned out to be a whirlwind of lies, deception, and manipulation. Up for the challenge, Cassie endured every blow as she suited up with the whole armor of God, with the shield of faith at work. But was it enough to grab hold of the promise and enter into God’s rest? This is the story, The Story Behind the Dress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Grace Elizabeth Hale, Katie Knowles, Ted Ownby, Jonathan Prude, William Sturkey, Susannah Walker, Becca Walton, and Sarah Jones Weicksel Fashion studies have long centered on the art and preservation of finely rendered garments of the upper class, and archival resources used in the study of southern history have gaps and silences. Yet, little study has been given to the approach of clothing as something made, worn, and intimately experienced by enslaved people, incarcerated people, and the poor and working class, and by subcultures perceived as transgressive. The essays in the volume, using clothing as a point of departure, encourage readers to imagine the South’s centuries-long engagement with a global economy through garments, with cotton harvested by enslaved or poorly paid workers, milled in distant factories, designed with influence from cosmopolitan tastemakers, and sold back in the South, often by immigrant merchants. Contributors explore such topics as how free and enslaved women with few or no legal rights claimed to own clothing in the mid-1800s, how white women in the Confederacy claimed the making of clothing as a form of patriotism, how imprisoned men and women made and imagined their clothing, and clothing cooperatives in civil rights–era Mississippi. An introduction by editors Ted Ownby and Becca Walton asks how best to begin studying clothing and fashion in southern history, and an afterword by Jonathan Prude asks how best to conclude.
