Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential sourcebook of prints from a key fashion decade. The 1950s was the decade when an analytical approach to design, with a lightness and freshness, combined with whimsical imagery and idiosyncratic subject matter. Showcasing hundreds of print designs, this book celebrates the heyday of postwar fashion design. From Lucienne Day and Robert Stewart to Maija Isola of Marimekko, the designs and influences of the print icons of the time are all covered. In addition to finished prints, the book contains exclusive illustrations and original artworks. The major themes of the period are explored, including: narrative and novelty; abstraction, exploring the distorted and attenuated forms used in print; artistic licence and the influence of contemporary art on fashion print; and finally kinetic prints that capture the influence of the era’s ‘mobiles, doodles and spasms’. Each short chapter introduction is followed by a range of illustrations with captions to give provenance and relevance, making this a unique sourcebook for contemporary designers and students.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diamonds and Spades: A Story of Two Lives The people most concerned were the Marquis of Silverspoon and his young wife. I should, in duty bound, have placed the lady first in a little affair of this kind, but then, as my Lord Marquis only married the young lady with the direct purpose of having heirs male, I think his lordship has a right to the precedence. It was he who had sent a notice to the Morning Post - the notice that made the Hon. Tom Ingot, his lordship's nephew, and heir presumptive to his estates and title - swear like a bargeman, and declare in his club that he did not believe it, and that the "infernal" editor had been hoaxing him. It was the Marquis who had ordered the house in Curzon Street to be listed, not in the army, but round its doors, and to be kept as still as the residence of a church mouse, which, I presume, must be the church itself. He it was, also, who had ordered the street to be covered from end to end with straw; and who had issued, by the mouths of his footmen, orders to the police for the summary expulsion of all organ boys, Punches, tumblers, and street-noises; and also, for the entire extinguishment of all riotous boys, who, sometimes forgetting themselves, did dare to shout, whistle, or sing in that aristocratic quartier. In consequence of these orders the place was as silent as a tomb; within and without, not a sound was heard in that house of Ingot. The very valets and footmen were shod with list, and the doctor as he came up the great stone staircase, so thickly carpeted, did not let his boots once creak. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Archive, Vol. 64: October 1950 Alas, when the dream is finally taken into the coarse hand of the Paris taxi-driver and begins to put on reality, the first disenchantment is crueler than even we dreamers deserve. Where all around us should have materialized a panorama of Sce'nes de la Vie de Boheme there appears at first only the sub stance Of picture postcards. And coming forth to mur der dreams there are American cars and American movies, there is a coca-cola advertisement laughing at us in a cafe where Baudelaire might have put into verse the melodious rending of his mind; there are American magazines and army surplus, and then there are the Americans themselves, thousands of them, expounding their personalities like little uran ium piles. In two respects the writer has attempted to cater to the taste Of the world. First. He has endeavored to clothe the divine, serious, life giving truths, in popular dress, for in this age, truth is not so well received unless presented in an interesting style. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at patients with early stage dementia who like reading but find it hard to follow 'normal' books. With large print, short easy to follow paragraphs and plenty of illustrations, the book looks at everyday life in the 1950s in the USA and Britain. It is intended to help stimulate long-term memories of those who lived through the 1950s, with sections on music, films, fashion, sport, holidays and much more. When read together with a relative or carer, it can also help promote conversation and reminiscence. The book does not mention dementia or memory loss, or anything that could cause distress or embarrassment to patients, and it is written in a simple but not childish style. It can equally be enjoyed by those without memory loss, for example, grandparents reading together with grandchildren to help them learn about the 'old days'. '... a few residents have read the book and had a look through it. There have been some great responses particularly when I sat with one of our residents and we looked through it together, it triggered many memories and conversation.' - Emma Bennett, Activities Co-Ordinator, Grove Care Home, Bristol.

Book excerpt: Embarking on motherhood was a very different affair in the 1950s to what it is today. From how to dress baby (matinee coats and bonnets) to how to administer feeds (strictly four-hourly if following the Truby King method), the childrearing methods of the 1950s are a fascinating insight into the lives of women in that decade. In A 1950s Mother, author, mother and grandmother Sheila Hardy collects heart-warming, personal anecdotes from those women who became mothers during this fascinating post-war period. From the benefits of 'crying it out' and being put out in the garden to gripe water and Listen with Mother, the wisdom of mothers from the 1950s reverberates down the decades to young mothers of any generation and is a hilarious and, at times, poignant trip down memory lane for any mother or child of the 1950s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clothing is often an indication of an individual's status, and gender. By the early nineteenth century clear definitions had developed regarding how American women and men were supposed to appear in public and how they were meant to lead their lives. As men's style of dress moved from the ornate to the moderate, women's fashions continued to be decorative and physically restrictive. This visible separation of the sexes was paralleled in other arenas - social, cultural, and religions. Some women defied this convention and cut their skirts short, abandoned their corsets, and put on trousers. In Pantaloons and Power Gayle V. Fisher shows how the reformers' denouncement of conventional dress highlighted the role of clothing in the struggle of power relations between the sexes.
