Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In books such as Mystics and Messiahs, Hidden Gospels, and The Next Christendom, Philip Jenkins has established himself as a leading commentator on religion and society. Now, in Dream Catchers, Jenkins offers a brilliant account of the changing mainstream attitudes towards Native American spirituality, once seen as degraded spectacle, now hailed as New Age salvation. Jenkins charts this remarkable change by highlighting the complex history of white American attitudes towards Native religions, considering everything from the 19th-century American obsession with "Hebrew Indians" and Lost Tribes, to the early 20th-century cult of the Maya as bearers of the wisdom of ancient Atlantis. He looks at the popularity of the Carlos Castaneda books, the writings of Lynn Andrews and Frank Waters, and explores New Age paraphernalia including dream-catchers, crystals, medicine bags, and Native-themed Tarot cards. He also examines the controversial New Age appropriation of Native sacred places and notes that many "white indians" see mainstream society as religiously empty. An engrossing account of our changing attitudes towards Native spirituality, Dream Catchers offers a fascinating introduction to one of the more interesting aspects of contemporary American religion.

More and more organizations around the world are engaging people who want to contribute their skills via the Internet. The service may be done virtually, but the volunteers are real! In The LAST Virtual Volunteering Guidebook, international volunteerism consultants Jayne Cravens and Susan J. Ellis emphasize that online service should be integrated into an organization’s overall strategy for involving volunteers. They maintain that the basic principles of volunteer management should apply equally to volunteers working online or onsite. Whether you’re tech-savvy or still a newbie in cyberspace, this book will show you how to lead online volunteers successfully by: -Overcoming resistance to online volunteer service and the myths surrounding it; -Designing virtual volunteering assignments, from micro-volunteering to long-term projects, from Web research to working directly with clients via the Internet; -Adding a virtual component to any volunteer’s service; -Interviewing and screening online volunteers; -Managing risk and protecting confidentiality in online interactions; -Creating online communities for volunteers; -Offering orientation and training via Internet tools; -Recruiting new volunteers successfully through the Web and social media; and -Assuring accessibility and diversity among online volunteers. Cravens and Ellis fervently believe that future volunteer management practitioners will automatically incorporate online service into community engagement, making this book the last virtual volunteering guidebook that anyone has to write!

Book excerpt: A Dream Catcher is thought by Native Americans to capture bad dreams so they perish in the light of day. In "Of a Dream Catcher," Aurelio Sanchez in gritty, streetwise narrative verse tells dramatic stories with surprising imagery, tales that are at times shocking, often beguiling and always beautiful, touching on themes of found and lost love, violence, addiction, poetic justice and injustice, the supernatural, cultural alienation, and celebration. In one story, a drag racer searches for a lost friend, but finds only longing; in another, a man who just wants to listen to the oldies meets a real man with a .45 caliber handgun; in another, a tomboy, after a magical evening, is transformed to Goddess. In another, a reckless ne'er do well is recruited to be an angel, to find charity in a cold world. Dreams, nightmares, visions and prophecies are captured in the web "Of a Dream Catcher" and are sifted to beauty. Includes a foreword by acclaimed New Mexico poet and novelist Jimmy Santiago Baca.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dream catcher is a craft object traditionally made by Native Americans. It is a hoop, often made of willow, that is woven with a web of string or cord, and decorated with feathers and beads. The dream catcher is said to filter out bad dreams, allowing only good dreams to pass through to the sleeper. The good dreams are said to slide down the feathers to the sleeper, while the bad dreams are trapped in the webbing and destroyed by the morning light. Dream catchers are typically hung above a person's bed and are believed to protect the sleeper from nightmares. They are often given as gifts to children or loved ones, to protect them while they sleep. The Ojibwe people, an indigenous people of North America, have a longstanding tradition of making and using dream catchers. The legend behind the dreamcatcher says that the spider woman, Asibikaashi, in the Ojibwe culture, would visit the people in their dreams and take away the bad dreams and give good dreams. The dreamcatcher is said to have originated with the Ojibwe people, but it has since been adopted by other Native American tribes and cultures. Dreamcatchers are made in different sizes, but most commonly are circular, with a diameter of around 6-8 inches. The hoop is usually made of willow, which is bent and woven together to form a circular shape. The webbing is then woven through the hoop, and the dreamcatcher is decorated with feathers and beads. The feathers are said to represent the breath of life and the beads are said to represent the tears of joy. The dreamcatcher is considered a sacred object that should be treated with respect. Dreamcatcher has become a popular decorative item and many people hang it in their homes to bring good luck, peace and harmony. It has also been used as a symbol of cultural appropriation. Many people have started to use it without understanding its significance and meaning in the Native American culture.

Have you ever known someone who has been able to interpret the meanings of dreams and visions, especially those of spiritual nature? Within the pages of this book you can gain valuable insight into the meaning of dreams and visions, through the life experiences of the author as he traverses the reader with him through some of his surprising, heartrending, soul searching, but yet totally enlightening experiences. Carl Adams is a Retired Navy Logistics Specialist, with 35 years of service. He has also served in the Army Reserve and the Air Force Reserve. He served aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Independence, and was also an Aerial Gunner with the 711th Special Operations Squadron. His ministry currently spans into eight different correctional institutions in the State of Ohio. He teaches a Life Skills Mentoring Class to prison inmates at the Madison Prison in London, Ohio. In that same City of London at the London Prison, he is also an Inmate Mentor, where he assists inmates scheduled for release, to integrate their lives back into the mainstream of society. His ministry also includes ministering to men on Death Row within the State of Ohio, being an Associate Chaplain with the County Jail JuvenileDetention Center in Springfield, Ohio, and being a Chaplain with the Church of God Chaplains Commission.
