Here he invites readers to run with him as he makes his way through the seasons of life, with the ultimate goal of reaching those outstretched arms. He encourages readers to recognize the touch and presence of God in ordinary life and to always keep the eternal goal in mind. "From the moment of our birth," he writes, "we move inexorably toward the day when we will be born to eternal life."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novella portrays the interior spiritual landscape of young Curt, growing up in a Russian-German Catholic family in Saskatchewan in the 1930's. Enjoy the comedy and drama of country school life in this prairie love story. Historical (at times hysterical) fiction at its finest. Something of everything: drama, romance, mystery, comedy, faith, and poetry. Ken Rolheiser, teacher of English for 35 years, has published poems, short stories and more than 1,000 articles in his column Pause For Reflection in Western Canada and the U.S. He is author of Where Earth Meets Heaven (St Anthony Messenger Press), Running with God (Twenty Third Publications), and Born To Be Kings (Xlibris). 10 reasons you may want to read this book 1.Romance: I could have told her then that I loved her. But we hadn't really met... I was trembling, but it was her warm nearness and the innocent smell of wet poplar mingling with the scent of her hair in my face... Soon we were lost in each others' kisses. We were hungry for more. Passion was igniting and filling the empty spot of longing that seemed endless. Within the perimeters of the situation we knew we were safe. We wouldn't go too far. Time was too short and I had to be heading home before long. Joan had commitments before supper as well. After a pause to catch our breaths we both started laughing. 2. Unrequited love: "Thanks! Oh, thanks!" And with that she was in my arms. We just stood there, firmly hanging on to what we knew we couldn't have, each other. We said nothing. We just knew. The night was ours, but it was an agony. 3.Comedy: Trafchuk...must have been trying to formulate a solution that would turn the tide of class control...Swiftly he moved to the door. Slowly he turned the knob and then, all the pent up emotion of days of tension uncoiling, he put his two hundred pounds into the door with the impact of an exploding piston. And, as one board member put it, getting a quality teacher was like buying oats. You have to pay a good price. If you are willing to settle for oats that's gone through the horse, it's cheaper. 4.Drama: The explosion of a World War One luger in the confined space of a classroom, the simultaneous impact of lead with the plaster of the back wall, and the shell shocked silence that followed still stop my memory..."I could kill you like an ox! What difference would it make?" 5.Ecology: Naturalists tell us one square meter of sod contains eight or nine kilometers of root. That's probably the only reason this dry land hadn't turned into a desert in the past twenty years. 6.Political: Miss Lutz's contract, however, was not renewed for a second year. In retrospect this was scarcely surprising to me since a teacher's value as a commodity in 1939 was equal to that of a good milk cow, a radio, two hounds, or 50 cases of beer. 7.Mystic: I knew I had seen the Christ child. No amount of earthly bleaching, even with my mother's lye soap, could make a gown so white, so bright! 8.Ethnic: Perebendia! We are the spirit of our ancestors. They too had been a pilgrim people in Russia, as we now are on the Canadian prairies. I go on the same journey as my father before me. 9.Poetic: My parents' positive influence helped me through the dizzy springtime of my life, the bursting, laughing, hoping and languishing time of youth. I was ready for summer wine which was just around the corner on the rutted prairie trail pitted with rocks and gopher holes. 10. Dream: In my dream I saw many people in a procession of light walking toward me from the north. I was centered at a family and community gathering at the old stone church. To the east lay the farm where, through my parents, light first dawned on me. To the south lay the blue water knowledge of the schoolhouse and to the west lay the red and black of the sunset.

That is, until an earthquake destroys his home, and he wakes up in a dark cavern infested with bloodthirsty and unearthly creatures, wielding strange powers and hearing an even stranger voice in his head claiming to be a goddess. Now Lukas must learn to embrace the unbelievable, leveling up his abilities and cooperating with the devious deity in his mind—and fast. Because wherever he is, it isn't friendly, and he'll need to fight to stay alive . . . Filled with unique characters and intricate world-building, Godsfall launches a captivating series that will appeal to fans of epic fantasy, progression storytelling, and clever spins on classic mythology. Book excerpt: Bestselling and controversial bishop and teacher John Shelby Spong reveals the subversive, mystical wisdom of the writer of the Gospel of John and how his teachings point us forward in the twenty-first century In The Fourth Gospel: Tales of a Jewish Mystic, Spong turns his attention to the Gospel of John, the fourth Gospel in the Bible. Contrary to what is most often believed, he writes that this gospel was misinterpreted by the framers of the fourth-century creeds to be a literal account of the life of Jesus. In fact, it is a literary, interpretive retelling of the events in Jesus’ life through the medium of Jewish worship traditions and fictional characters, from Nicodemus and Lazarus to the “Beloved Disciple.” The Fourth Gospel not only recaptures the original message of this gospel, but also provides us with a radical new dimension to the claim that in the humanity of Jesus the reality of God has been met and engaged. This book offers a fresh way to read the Gospel of John and a unique primer about how to be a Christian in the post-Christian twenty-first century.

He goes through all the novels literally, both the science fiction works and the so-called mainstream novels Dick did not publish in his lifetime. The reader of science fiction should welcome a book like this, which is both knowledgeable of the SF tradition tradition and creatively analytical. I could not put this book down once I began to read it".---George Slusser, University of California, Riverside --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fleeing the Nazis, Theodor W. Adorno lived in New York City as a refugee from 1938 until 1941. During these years, he was intensively involved in a study of how the recently developed techniques for the nation-wide transmission of music over radio were transforming the perception of music itself. This broad ranging radio research was conceived as nothing less than an investigation, partly empirical, of Walter Benjamin's speculative claims for the emancipatory potential of art in the age of its mechanical reproduction. The results of Adorno's project set him decisively at odds with Benjamin's theses and at the same time became the body of thinking that formed the basis for Adornos own aesthetics in his Philosophy of New Music. Current of Music is the title that Adorno himself gave to this research project. For complex reasons, however, Adorno was not able to bring the several thousands of pages of this massive study, most of it written in English, to a final form prior to leaving New York for California, where he would immediately begin work with Max Horkheimer on the Dialectic of Enlightenment. Robert Hullot-Kentor, the distinguished Adorno scholar, reconstructed Adorno's project for the Adorno Archive in Germany and provides a lengthy and informative introduction to the fragmentary texts collected in this volume. Current of Music will be widely discussed for the light it throws on the development of Adorno's thought, on his complex relationship with Walter Benjamin, but most of all for the important perspectives it provides on questions of popular culture, the music of industrial entertainment, the history of radio and the social dimensions of the reproduction of art.

Book excerpt: Neil Peart decided to drive his BMW Z-8 automobile from L.A. to Big Bend National Park, in Southwest Texas. As he sped along “between the gas-gulping SUVs and asthmatic Japanese compacts clumping in the left lane, and the roaring, straining semis in the right,” he acted as his own DJ, lining up the CDs chronologically and according to his possible moods. “Not only did the music I listened to accompany my journey, but it also took me on sidetrips, through memory and fractals of associations, threads reaching back through my whole life in ways I had forgotten, or had never suspected…. Sifting through those decades and those memories, I realized that I wasn’t interested in recounting the facts of my life in purely autobiographical terms, but rather … in trying to unweave the fabric of my life and times. As one who was never much interested in looking back, because always too busy moving forward, I found that once I opened those doors to the past, I became fascinated with the times and their effect on me. The songs and the stories I had taken for granted suddenly had a resonance that had clearly echoed down the corridors of my entire life, and I felt a thrill of recognition, and the sense of a kind of adventure. A travel story, but not so much about places, but about music and memories.”

Book excerpt: Neil Peart's travel memoir of thoughts, observations, and experiences as he cycles through West Africa, reveals the subtle, yet powerful writing style that has made him one of rock's greatest lyricists. As he describes his extraordinary journey and his experiences ' from the pains of dysentery, to a confrontation with an armed soldier, to navigating dirt roads off the beaten path ' he reveals his own emotional landscape, and along the way, the different "masks" that he discovers he wears. "Cycling is a good way to travel anywhere, but especially in Africa. You are independent and mobile, and yet travel at people speed ' fast enough to travel on to another town in the cooler morning hours, but slow enough to meet people: the old farmer at the roadside who raises his hand and says, 'You are welcome,' the tireless women who offer a smile to a passing cyclist, the children whose laughter transcends the humblest home."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling and visionary medicines are fundamental aspects of the human experience. The latter takes us to places beyond ourselves, into realms of the mind unplumbed, unfathomable, and often unpleasant. The former allows us to share such experiences with each other. It unlocks personal experiences from the individuated shell and releases them into the collective, whereby we can learn from them together. From the author of Decomposing The Shadow: Lessons From The Psilocybin Mushroom (2013) comes a captivating and vulnerable exposé into the dark recesses of the human psyche. This book follows James W. Jesso as he recounts in three of his most turbulent and dark experiences with visionary mushrooms. Through story, he takes us along as he travels through depression, self-loathing, inadequacy and feeling unable to love, and out the other side into confidence, courage, and inspiration. From daytime trips with friends gone sour, beyond a night rife with psychotic breaks, and into the watery confines of facing depression in a sensory deprivation tank, The True Light Of Darkness is a vehicle of insight on what it means to ask to be broken in the hopes of finding wholeness.
