Book excerpt: This study examined the relationships between the Draw-a-Person-in-the-Rain (DAPR) assessment and two self-report measures, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Coping Resource Inventory Scale (CRIS). A sample of 40 male and female clients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses as well as co-occurring substance use disorders participated in the study. Three graduate students used a modified set of DAPR rating scales to score the drawings for stress and protection indicators. Intraclass correlation coefficients demonstrated satisfactory inter-rater reliability for both scales. The number of DAPR protection indicators correlated positively with the CRIS Self-Directedness scale and (marginally) with the Confidence scale and the Mental Tension Control subscale. The number of DAPR stress indicators did not correlate with either self-report measure.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated coping mechanisms of at-risk adolescents as they relate to stress and exposure to violence. The purpose of the study was to see if the Draw-A-Person-In-The-Rain is a valid instrument for measuring both stress and coping mechanisms. The Screen for Adolescent Violence Exposure, Coping Response Inventory for Youth and DAPR were administered to 28 at risk adolescents who were students at an alternative high school in Connecticut. The results showed that neither stress as measured by the SAVE nor coping as measure by the CRI-Y were significantly correlated with the corresponding DAPR indicators. Limitations of the study and potential future research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the initial publication of Introduction to Art Therapy Research, interest in this field has grown dramatically along with public policy demands for an up-to-date, culturally relevant evidence base on which to practice. This revised and expanded edition pays particular attention to the field’s unique and compelling questions, most current literature, and emerging trends in research, while guiding readers through the basics of qualitative, quantitative, and art-based research design. Written by a prominent figure in the world of art therapy, this pragmatic text is organized into three parts: Part I provides an overview of the basic steps in conceptualizing an art therapy research study, with an emphasis on perspectives that are intrinsic to art therapy. Chapters in Part II cover an inclusive methodological framework from quantitative and outcomes research to qualitative, practitioner-based field research, critical-participatory orientations, phenomenological and narrative approaches, and the growing influence of art-based research in art therapy. Part III offers up-to-date ethical guidelines and valuable tools for understanding and evaluating research reports, as well as practical guidance for publication in scholarly journals based on the author’s long experience as the editor of the field’s leading scholarly publication. Also included are added coverage on cross-cultural research as well as high quality examples from published, peer-reviewed art therapy research studies that illustrate material throughout the text.
