Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Draughon's Practical Bookkeeping: Illustrated for Self-Instruction by Home Study and for Use in Literary Schools and Business Colleges To take a Trial Balance is to see if the Ledger is on balance. First, go to the left-hand side, the receiving side, of your Cash Book, and foot up the column. Then foot up the column on the right-hand side of your Cash Book, which represents the Cash you paid out. Subtract this from the amount of your left-hand column, which column represents the Cash you receive. The difference between the two columns will represent the amount of Cash on hand. Enter the difference on the left-hand side, the debit side, of your Trial Balance. (See January Trial Balance, page 5.) Second, foot up the accounts in the Ledger, debit and credit sides, in small pencil figures, using a sharp-pointed pencil. Place the footings close to and directly under the respective accounts. After footing up each account, write in the Trial Balance Book the name of each account in the Ledger, except those that balance that is, when both debit and credit sides agree. Take the difference between the debit and credit of each account. If the difference shows a debit, place the difference in the debit column on your Trial Balance opposite the names of the respective accounts you had previously written in your Trial Balance Book. (See Trial Balance, page 5, for form.) If the difference in these accounts shows a credit, then you would write the difference in the credit column of your Trial Balance. Proceed this way through your Ledger. When through, add your total debits, left-hand side of your Trial Balance; then add your total credits, right-hand side of your Trial Balance. (See footings of January Trial Balance, page 5.) Your footings should agree. Should they not agree, then you know that you have an error in some part of your work. A Trial Balance does not absolutely prove that your work is correct. It proves only that each debit has had a corresponding credit, and each credit has had a corresponding debit. The Trial Balance does not detect such errors as posting to the wrong account. You might intend to credit Jones with $50, but you might, by mistake, credit Smith with this amount. This would not throw you off in your Trial Balance at all. Then there is another mistake you might make which would not affect your Trial Balance. For instance, you might, in adding a credit column, make an error of $10. You might, also, in adding your debit column, make an error of $10. Hence, you see, one would offset the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical and Practical Book-Keeping by Double and Single Entry: For Use in Business Colleges, Common Schools, High Schools and Academies, and for Self-Instruction We desire that the student's mind shall be constantly directed to the matter in hand - that of learning practical book-keeping - and not become confused by abstruse theories that can be of no possible use to him in pursuing the course of study, nor of the least value to him in after life. The claim of this work to superiority over all other publications of its character is based, particularly, upon the manner in which the transactions selected as a basis of the student's work have been graded, the fullness of explanation of every step to be taken, the placing of such explanations in immediate proximity to the transactions, the system of references to the illustrations adopted, the encouragement to progress in penmanship afforded by the engraved pages, the ability of the pupil to rely upon himself, and the material lessening of the labor of the teacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal System of Practical Bookkeeping This work is designed as a text-book on theoretical and practical Double-entry Bookkeeping, and is planned for use in public and private schools and colleges, and for self-instruction. With a view to facilitating the study and mastery of the fundamental principles of the subject, the theoretical part of the work is made as concise as possible, all unnecessary or unimportant matter being omitted. At the same time, subjects of importance to a broad knowledge of the science, but generally neglected in other text-books, are here given the careful treatment their importance warrants. In the short graded exercises and in the detailed business series the principles of bookkeeping are applied, as they are mastered, to office practice, to the recording of practical business transactions, and to the ordinary routine of mercantile business. The series gives practice, not only in the use of general and auxiliary books of entry and record, but of many common business forms and papers as well. Thus made familiar with the daily run of office business and with the duties pertaining to positions he may be called upon to fill, the student will be able to meet the requirements of his first situation without the difficulty which so many beginners experience from lack of business knowledge or actual preliminary office training. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical and Practical Book-Keeping: By Double and Single Entry, for Use in Business Colleges, Common Schools, High Schools and Academies, and for Self-Instructions We do claim, however, that we have arranged those already established in such a manner, and accompanied that arrangement with such clear and complete explanations, as will insure the pupil a knowledge of the subject, practically independent of the instructor. While we have studiously avoided unnecessary theorizing, we have endeavored to give a competent reason for every step to be taken, believing that the pupil, if he have the ability to master the subject under any circumstances, win be able to secure, from the reasons and illustrations given, a thorough knowledge of the science of accounts. We desire that the students mind shall be constantly directed to the matter in hand that of learning practical book-keeping and not become confused by abstruse theories that can be of no possible use to him in pursuing the course of study, nor of the least value to him in after life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Office Routine and Bookkeeping: A Method of Teaching the Science of Accounts and of Illustrating the Routine in Business Offices Course Pedagogical principles require that correct mental impressions of business transactions, and the documents that vouch for such, be produced in the mind of the student before he attempts to make a record of them. The methods employed to produce such impressions may vary; in this work it was thought best to reproduce the routine work of the bookkeeper as nearly as possible. To that end, and for that purpose, hundreds of elegantly engraved business documents accompany this book, which represent the proprietor's incoming mail, and from which the student - his bookkeeper - is to make entries. In addition, the necessary blank forms are furnished, and the student is required to write up all the documents that represent the proprietor's outgoing mail, and to make the records therefrom. When the student has had sufficient practice in making records from business documents they are dispensed with, as it is believed that the advanced student will derive valuable mental discipline in making records from historical data; besides, the use of vouchers with which he has become familiar, will tend to make the work monotonous if continued too long. The independent price lists, the uniform script in the text book and on all the vouchers, and the persistent emphasis that is placed on the importance of superior mechanical work can not fail to have a beneficial influence on the student's work. The Introductory Course of this work came from the press one year ago, and was most enthusiastically received by teachers. Since then there have been added 130 pages devoted to Commission, Department Store, Manufacturing, Corporation and Banking businesses. Many modern, labor-saving features, which have never before been given, are introduced, and it is believed that they will meet the approval of teachers. Special attention is called to the practical treatment of corporation bookkeeping. The author and publishers hereby express their thanks to the many teachers who have used the Introductory Course in the past year, and trust that this, the Complete Course, will prove equally satisfactory to all who use it.
