Book excerpt: This book includes the carefully edited contributions to the United Engineering Foundation Conference: The Aerodynamics of Heavy Vehicles: Trucks, Buses and Trains held in Monterey, California from December 2-6, 2002. This conference brought together 90 leading engineering researchers discussing the aerodynamic drag of heavy vehicles. The book topics include a comparison of computational fluid dynamics calculations using both steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes, large-eddy simulation, and hybrid turbulence models and experimental data obtained from wind tunnel experiments. Advanced experimental techniques including three-dimensional particle image velocimetry are presented as well, along with their use in evaluating drag reduction devices.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamics has never been more central to the development of cars, commercial vehicles, motorbikes, trains and human powered vehicles, driven by the need for efficiency: reducing carbon dioxide emissions, reducing fuel consumption, increasing range and alleviating problems associated with traffic congestion. Reducing vehicle weight makes it more challenging to ensure that they are stable and handle well over a wide range of environmental conditions. Lighter structures are also more vulnerable to aerodynamically induced vibration. Alongside this, customers demand an environment that is quiet, comfortable and maintains their vision of the world around them in all weathers. These aims must be met by designing vehicles that engage customers emotionally, promoting the brand values of manufacturers and operators. This can only be done by collaboration between designers and aerodynamicists. Examine the latest developments in vehicle aerodynamic development Explore opportunities to network and share experiences around different areas Focus on future challenges and the engineering knowledge and technology required to resolve them Discuss other areas of development including handling and stability, tyre aerodynamics and modelling, aeroacoustics and fluid structure interaction

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of passive and active flow control in fluid dynamics, with an emphasis on utilizing fluid instabilities for enhancing control performance. Examples are given from a wide range of technologically important flow fields occurring in aerospace applications, from low-subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers. This essential book can be used for both research and teaching on the topics of fluid instabilities, fluid measurement and flow actuator techniques, and problem sets are provided at the end of each chapter to reinforce key concepts and further extend readers' understanding of the field. The solutions manual is available as a online resource for instructors. The text is well suited for both graduate students in fluid dynamics and for practising engineers in the aerodynamics design field.

Book excerpt: Boundary layer separation is a source of large fluid dynamic forces on many engineered vehicles and structures, limiting the speed and efficiency at which we transport people and goods. The maneuvering of ocean and air vehicles in particular is limited by resistance due to cross-flow separation. Hull forms with lower hydrodynamic resistance in maneuvers are able to follow trajectories with tighter turns and at higher speeds. Despite the progress that has been made in the control of two dimensional flow separation, little has been done to apply flow control to complex three-dimensional separation from maneuvering hull forms. This thesis studies and develops mechanisms for mitigating three-dimensional cross-flow separation to reduce the drag of hull forms in maneuvers. A new strategy is proposed for designing flow control mechanisms for the three dimensional flow past maneuvering hull forms based on the unsteady cross-flow analogy. The unsteady cross-flow analogy relates the steady flow past a three-dimensional body to an analogous unsteady two-dimensional flow past a cylinder that changes size and shape in time. This provides a framework for adapting two-dimensional drag reduction techniques to the three-dimensional flow. In addition, the unsteady cross-flow analogy is computationally inexpensive and so is suitable for iterative use in preliminary design. The new strategy is considered by first implementing the unsteady cross-flow analogy in numerical simulations. Next, passive and active flow control mechanisms are studied experimentally for drag reduction of a circular cylinder and then adapted through the analogy for drag reduction of a slender body at an angle of attack. Passive control is exerted through modifications to the shape of the body and active control is exerted with rotating control cylinders. Both passive and active methods are experimentally demonstrated to reduce the drag. The experimental results also confirm key predictions of the unsteady cross-flow analogy, demonstrating that it is a promising tool for developing three-dimensional separation control techniques.
