Additionally, the collection contains correspondence with Emanuel Newmann, Cyrus Sulzberger, and Sumner Welles, from the early 1940s; Zionist correspondence and memoranda related to the Zionist Organization of America, 1917-1934; correspondence and memoranda related to unemployment insurance, 1921-1937; and general correspondence, 1916-1937. The collection includes material related to the response of American Jewish leadership to the rise of Nazism, World War II, and the Holocaust and the rescue of European Jewry, Jewish settlement in Palestine, and anti-semitism in America. Also included is a letter from David Ben Gurion to Justice L. Brandeis on the history of relations between Jews and Arabs in Palestine; a statement by Rabbi Silver concerning contention over division of funds raised for the United Palestine Appeal, the Joint Distribution Committee, and the National Refugee Service; an interview with Henry Morgenthau by Dr. Bernard Joseph regarding conditions in Palestine under the British High Commissioner; and, a report by Chaim Weizmann on a meeting with Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Book excerpt: Set in the first decade of modern Israel's existence, this volume offers an insightful look at the changing relationship of American Jews and the reborn Jewish nation/state. It is the first in-depth analysis of the subject during this key period. As the Cold War rages, leaders in all camps are shown attempting to shape and control the tangled circumstances that engulf themespecially American Jewish Committee president Jacob Blaustein, Israeli founding father David Ben-Gurion, and American presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Tapping into private correspondence, diaries, oral history interviews, scholarly literature and other archival materials, Zvi Ganin provides a richly detailed look at motivations, passions, and attitudes of Jewish and Israeli leaders on numerous issuesnone more affecting than in the stormy debate over dual loyalty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel's Moment is a major new account of how a Jewish state came to be forged in the shadow of World War Two and the Holocaust and the onset of the Cold War. Drawing on new research in government, public and private archives, Jeffrey Herf exposes the political realities that underpinned support for and opposition to Zionist aspirations in Palestine. In an unprecedented international account, he explores the role of the United States, the Arab States, the Palestine Arabs, the Zionists, and key European governments from Britain and France to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Poland. His findings reveal a spectrum of support and opposition that stood in sharp contrast to the political coordinates that emerged during the Cold War, shedding new light on how and why the state of Israel was established in 1948 and challenging conventional associations of left and right, imperialism and anti-imperialism, and racism and anti-racism.
