Book excerpt: The Soil Organic Carbon Mapping cookbook provides a step-by-step guidance for developing 1 km grids for soil carbon stocks. It includes the preparation of local soil data, the compilation and pre-processing of ancillary spatial data sets, upscaling methodologies, and uncertainty assessments. Guidance is mainly specific to soil carbon data, but also contains many generic sections on soil grid development, as it is relevant for other soil properties. This second edition of the cookbook provides generic methodologies and technical steps to produce SOC maps and has been updated with knowledge and practical experiences gained during the implementation process of GSOCmap V1.0 throughout 2017. Guidance is mainly specific to SOC data, but as this cookbook contains generic sections on soil grid development it can be applicable to map various soil properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil salinity is a key abiotic-stress and poses serious threats to crop yields and quality of produce. Owing to the underlying complexity, conventional breeding programs have met with limited success. Even genetic engineering approaches, via transferring/overexpressing a single ‘direct action gene’ per event did not yield optimal results. Nevertheless, the biotechnological advents in last decade coupled with the availability of genomic sequences of major crops and model plants have opened new vistas for understanding salinity-responses and improving salinity tolerance in important glycophytic crops. Our goal is to summarize these findings for those who wish to understand and target the molecular mechanisms for producing salt-tolerant and high-yielding crops. Through this 2-volume book series, we critically assess the potential venues for imparting salt stress tolerance to major crops in the post-genomic era. Accordingly, perspectives on improving crop salinity tolerance by targeting the sensory, ion-transport and signaling mechanisms were presented in Volume 1. Volume 2 now focuses on the potency of post-genomic era tools that include RNAi, genomic intervention, genome editing and systems biology approaches for producing salt tolerant crops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of renewable energies and energy saving and efficiency are needs of global society and universities. Universities have a large responsibility and social impact, as they are an example and engine of social change. Universities, in the European context, must be at the forefront of ESA processes, seeking to be at the same level as, and preferably higher than, the rest of society, seeking a goal of 20% renewable energy for 2020 and, in the longer term, greater energy efficiency based on a diverse use of renewable energy and studying the feasibility of other energy processes (cogeneration, trigeneration, etc.). The application of renewable energies and energy efficiency allow universities to make significant savings in their costs and contribute to sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Actions in pursuit of these goals in addition to the objective of energy saving should promote research and form an example for the university community. This book aims to advance the contribution of energy saving and the use of renewable energies in order to achieve more sustainable universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated third edition of the classic book that provides an introduction to electric machines and their emerging applications The thoroughly revised and updated third edition of Electromechanical Motion Devices contains an introduction to modern electromechanical devices and offers an understanding of the uses of electric machines in emerging applications such as in hybrid and electric vehicles. The authors—noted experts on the topic—put the focus on modern electric drive applications. The book includes basic theory, illustrative examples, and contains helpful practice problems designed to enhance comprehension. The text offers information on Tesla's rotating magnetic field, which is the foundation of reference frame theory and explores in detail the reference frame theory. The authors also review permanent-magnet ac, synchronous, and induction machines. In each chapter, the material is arranged so that if steady-state operation is the main concern, the reference frame derivation can be de-emphasized and focus placed on the steady state equations that are similar in form for all machines. This important new edition: • Features an expanded section on Power Electronics • Covers Tesla's rotating magnetic field • Contains information on the emerging applications of electric machines, and especially, modern electric drive applications • Includes online animations and a solutions manual for instructors Written for electrical engineering students and engineers working in the utility or automotive industry, Electromechanical Motion Devices offers an invaluable book for students and professionals interested in modern machine theory and applications.

Book excerpt: This text provides a basic treatment of modern electric machine analysis that gives readers the necessary background for comprehending the traditional applications and operating characteristics of electric machines—as well as their emerging applications in modern power systems and electric drives, such as those used in hybrid and electric vehicles. Through the appropriate use of reference frame theory, Electromagnetic Motion Devices, Second Edition introduces readers to field-oriented control of induction machines, constant-torque, and constant-power control of dc, permanent-magnet ac machines, and brushless dc machines. It also discusses steady-state and transient performance in addition to their applications. Electromagnetic Motion Devices, Second Edition presents: The derivations of all machine models, starting with a common first-principle approach (based upon Ohm's, Faraday's, Ampere's, and Newton's/Euler's laws) A generalized two-phase approach to reference frame theory that can be applied to the ac machines featured in the book The influences of the current and voltage constraints in the torque-versus-speed profile of electric machines operated with an electric drive Complete with slides, videos, animations, problems & solutions Thoroughly classroom tested and complete with a supplementary solutions manual and video library, Electromagnetic Motion Devices, Second Edition is an invaluable book for anyone interested in modern machine theory and applications. Book excerpt: The prevalence of fecal incontinence is approximately 5% in the general population. In all patients, the treatment of fecal incontinence is primarily conservative and surgery is offered as second line treatment. Electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves (SNS) with an implanted electrode is a minimally invasive and effective treatment of idiopathic FI and the indications for SNS are widening. However, SNS requires surgery while percutaneous electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves could be a non-invasive alternative. Stimulation for Faecal Incontinence comprises five studies. Study I examines the clinical effectiveness of transcutaneous stimulation. Study II and III examined the acute effect of rectal stimulation in idiopathic incontinent patients and patients with spinal cord injury. In study IV the validity of a new research tool for assessment of gastrointestinal motility during stimulation is evaluated. In study V, small intestinal motility is investigated in patients implanted with a sacral nerve stimulator for faecal incontinence. Based on the present book it can be concluded that: DGN stimulation reduces faecal incontinence in patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence but the mode of action remains unknown. DGN does not affect rectal wall properties in patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence. DGN increases rectal tone in patients with supraconal spinal cord injury, but the validity and clinical importance of the finding need further study. MTS-1 is useful for determination of gastric emptying and small intestinal transit time. Preliminary results indicate that SNS does not affect small intestinal motility, but data need further analysis and have to be confirmed in a larger study.
