Book excerpt: The vast amount of textual information available today is useless unless it can be effectively and efficiently searched. In information retrieval, we wish to match queries with relevant documents. Documents can be represented by the terms that appear within them, but literal matching of terms does not necessarily retrieve all relevant documents. Latent Semantic Indexing represents documents by approximations and tends to cluster documents on similar topics even if their term profiles are somewhat different. This approximate representation is usually accomplished using a low-rank singular value decomposition (SVD) approximation. In this paper, we use an alternate decomposition, the semi-discrete decomposition (SDD). In our tests, for equal query times, the SDD does as well as the SVD and uses less than one-tenth the storage. Additionally, we show how to update the SDD for a dynamically changing document collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of parallel programming and architectures is essential for simulating and solving problems in modern computational practice. There has been rapid progress in microprocessor architecture, interconnection technology and software devel- ment, which are in?uencing directly the rapid growth of parallel and distributed computing. However, in order to make these bene?ts usable in practice, this dev- opment must be accompanied by progress in the design, analysis and application aspects of parallel algorithms. In particular, new approaches from parallel num- ics are important for solving complex computational problems on parallel and/or distributed systems. The contributions to this book are focused on topics most concerned in the trends of today’s parallel computing. These range from parallel algorithmics, progr- ming, tools, network computing to future parallel computing. Particular attention is paid to parallel numerics: linear algebra, differential equations, numerical integ- tion, number theory and their applications in computer simulations, which together form the kernel of the monograph. We expect that the book will be of interest to scientists working on parallel computing, doctoral students, teachers, engineers and mathematicians dealing with numerical applications and computer simulations of natural phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This master thesis deals with the implementation of a search engine using Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) called BoSSE. Four different search types were implemented which allow a search for documents or terms similar to a given term, query or document. These search types are evaluated and the importance of term weighting, exclusion of non content words and the right selection of k for the reduction of dimension are discussed. Furthermore, an introduction to Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and an explanation of the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is given.

Book excerpt: The authors develop new SVD-updating algorithms for three types of updating problems arising from Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) for information retrieval to deal with rapidly changing text document collections. They also provide theoretical justification for using a reduced-dimension representation of the original document collection in the updating process. Numerical experiments using several standard text document collections show that the new algorithms give higher (interpolated) average precisions than the existing algorithms and the retrieval accuracy is comparable to that obtained using the complete document collection.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on the Theory of Information Retrieval, ICTIR 2011, held in Bertinoro, Italy, in September 2011. The 25 revised full papers and 13 short papers presented together with the abstracts of two invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 65 submissions. The papers cover topics ranging from query expansion, co-occurence analysis, user and interactive modelling, system performance prediction and comparison, and probabilistic approaches for ranking and modelling IR to topics related to interdisciplinary approaches or applications. They are organized into the following topical sections: predicting query performance; latent semantic analysis and word co-occurrence analysis; query expansion and re-ranking; comparison of information retrieval systems and approximate search; probability ranking principle and alternatives; interdisciplinary approaches; user and relevance; result diversification and query disambiguation; and logical operators and descriptive approaches.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of an information retrieval system is to retrieve all the relevant documents, which are relevant to the user query. The Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) based ad hoc document retrieval task investigates the performance of retrieval systems that search a static set of documents using new questions/queries. Performance of LSI has been tested for several smaller datasets (e.g., MED, CISI abstracts etc) however, LSI has not been tested for a large dataset. In this research, we concentrated on the performance of LSI on large dataset. Stop word list and term weighting schemes are two key parameters in the area of information retrieval. We investigated the performance of LSI by using three different set of stop word lists and, also, without removing the stop words from the test collection. We also applied three different term-weighting (raw term frequency, log-entropy, and tf-idf) schemes to measure retrieval performance of LSI. We observed that, firstly, for a LSI based ad hoc information retrieval system, a tailored stop word list must be assembled for every unique large dataset. Secondly, the use of tf-idf term weighting scheme shows better retrieval performance than log-entropy and raw term frequency weighting schemes even when the test collection became large. --P. ii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multimedia data require specialised management techniques because the representations of colour, time, semantic concepts, and other underlying information can be drastically different from one another. This textbook on multimedia data management techniques gives a unified perspective on retrieval efficiency and effectiveness. It provides a comprehensive treatment, from basic to advanced concepts, that will be useful to readers of different levels, from advanced undergraduate and graduate students to researchers and to professionals. After introducing models for multimedia data (images, video, audio, text, and web) and for their features, such as colour, texture, shape, and time, the book presents data structures and algorithms that help store, index, cluster, classify, and access common data representations. The authors also introduce techniques, such as relevance feedback and collaborative filtering, for bridging the 'semantic gap' and present the applications of these to emerging topics, including web and social networking.
