Book Synopsis Finnish Settler Colonialism in North America by : Rani-Henrik Andersson
Download or read book Finnish Settler Colonialism in North America written by Rani-Henrik Andersson and published by Helsinki University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finnish Settler Colonialism in North America reinterprets Finnish experiences in North America by connecting them to the transnational processes of settler colonial conquest, far-settlement, elimination of natives, and capture of terrestrial spaces. Rather than merely exploring whether the idea of Finns as a different kind of immigrant is a myth, this book challenges it in many ways. It offers an analysis of the ways in which this myth manifests itself, why it has been upheld to this day, and most importantly how it contributes to settler colonialism in North America and beyond. The authors in this volume apply multidisciplinary perspectives in revealing the various levels of Finnish involvement in settler colonialism. In their chapters, authors seek to understand the experiences and representations of Finns in North American spatial projects, in territorial expansion and integration, and visions of power. They do so by analyzing how Finns reinvented their identities and acted as settlers, participated in the production of settler colonial narratives, as well as benefitted and took advantage of settler colonial structures. Finnish Settler Colonialism in North America aims to challenge traditional histories of Finnish migration, in which Finns have typically been viewed almost in isolation from the broader American context, not to mention colonialism. The book examines the diversity of roles, experiences, and narrations of and by Finns in the histories of North America by employing the settler colonial analytical framework.

Maria’s attention shifts to the sky as a strong gust of wind nearly blowing her over. She looks to her friend Emily to ensure she is alright. The sun is gone and so is Emily.
Download or read book Round River written by Aldo Leopold and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1972-03-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To those who know the charm of Aldo Leopold's writing in A Sand County Almanac, this collection from his journals and essays will be a new delight. The journal entries included here were written in camp during his many field trips--hunting, fishing, and exploring--and they indicate the source of ideas on land ethics found in his longer essays. They reflect as well two long canoe trips in Canada and a sojourn in Mexico, where Leopold hunted deer with bow and arrow. The essays presented here are culled from the more contemplative notes which were still in manuscript form at the time of Leopold's death in 1948, fighting a brush fire on a neighbor's farm. Round River has been edited by Leopold's son, Luna, a geologist well-known in the field of conservation. It is also charmingly illustrated with line drawings by Charles W. Schwartz. All admirers of Leopold's work--indeed, all lovers of nature--will find this book richly rewarding.

Book excerpt: The Japanese new-fangled regime publicized itself as a self-sufficient, self-sustaining entity, freed from Big Brother USA and the United Nations sphere of influence, asserting itself as an anti-Big Brother USA and aligning its military might with North Korea, China, Taiwan, and Russia. As a more severe, brutal blow to Big Brother USA and the United Nations Armed Forces, Taiwan discharged the Western and the European military and civilian personnel from its soil, ending all interrelations. Communist China led its new military allies of Japan, North Korea, Russia, and Taiwan in attempt to demoralize Big Brother USA and the UN military forces. The Second Korean Wars sonata forced its resonance into us with the proverbial reverberations of fighter jet air assaults, howitzer artillery rounds, helicopter gunships, rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, military weaponries of all sizes and types . . . boom, thump-swish, ka-boom, bang-bang-bang, pa-pa, pa-pa! And on and on and on.

Book excerpt: People of the River is a gripping new saga of pre-historic America that takes us to the Mississippi Valley and the tribe known as the Mound builders. It is a time of troubles. In Cahokia, the corn crop is failing again and a warchief—and the warrior woman he may never possess—are disgusted by their Chief's lust for tribute. Now even the gods have turned their faces, closing the underworld to the seers. If the gods have abandoned the people, there is no hope—unless it comes in the form of a young girl who is learning to Dream of Power. A masterful story of North America's Forgotten Past by New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear.
