Book excerpt: One doesn't necessarily think of the American South as a vivid and colorful place, but Doug Hall challenges that notion with a fire engine red house in Savannah and a turquoise abattoir in Lumber City. Then he sets out contrasting those colorful southern surroundings with equally brilliant images from Cuba and Mexico. The book contains 25 stunning photographs taken by the author, a photographer who divides his time between Atlanta and Mexico City.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Original Six NHL member, the Broadway Blueshirts boast one of the most renowned histories in the last hundred years of North American professional hockey. With the New York Rangers returning to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in twenty years in the 2013-2014 season, their presence is more prominent than ever. In this newly updated edition of New York Rangers: Greatest Moments and Players, first published in 2007, hockey’s premier historian recounts all of the Rangers’ luminaries such as Andy Bathgate, Brian Leetch, and current goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, as well as their most telling moments on the ice. Throughout the years, Stan Fischler, a Manhattanite of almost half a century, has covered both the Blueshirts’ highs and lows. Regarded as the dean of American hockey journalists, he has been covering the sport for sixty years, and has been following the Rangers even longer. With over ninety books on hockey published to date, there is nobody better to narrate the history of one of hockey’s most celebrated clubs, the New York Rangers, than Stan Fischler. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports--books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

He was also a poet of merit, but few people knew that or really understood the conflicts, personal and professional, that made him, in the opinion of many who knew him, appear arrogant and unapproachable. This account tries to show the whole man, and it is to date the only biography of M. G. Smith. A Man Divided is a brief account of M. G. Smith the man, "the talented, hardworking Jamaican and how he made his way, rather than of the academic performance of Professor M. G. Smith the internationally distinguished anthropologist". Book excerpt: This vivid and revealing account of thirty-five years of art and history revolves around the locus of the internationally renowned Anna Schwartz Gallery and its eponymous founder. Beginning in St Kilda with United Artists, visionary gallerist Anna Schwartz relocated to City Gallery at 45 Flinders Lane before Anna Schwartz Gallery found its current location at 185 Flinders Lane in 1993. Present Tense captures Schwartz, known for her steadfast promotion of the contemporary and the challenging, alongside the inimitable roster of artists that her gallery represents, and the key figures of Australian art and culture. The visually stunning volume combines historical vignettes, interviews, and hundreds of archival photographs and artworks. Told with wit and verve, it reveals a story that arcs from the journeys of immigrants who make up Australia's rich cultural life to the local artistic scenes of Melbourne to the global stage of the art world. Present Tense is an elegant cloth-bound volume featuring full-colour images throughout and a magnificent portrait of Anna Schwartz by artist Jenny Watson on the spine.

Book excerpt: Embracing studies of football fans across Europe, this book tackles questions of power, national and regional identities, and race and racism, highlighting the changing role of fans in the game. Combining new approaches to the study of fan culture with critical assessments of the commercialization of the game, this fascinating book offers a comprehensive and timely examination of the state of European football supporters culture as the game prepares itself for the next millennium. The contributors, all leading figures in sports studies, consider: * whether football remains the peoples game, or if it is now run entirely by and for club owners and directors who have overseen the flotation of clubs on the stock exchange, a new focus on merchandising and the escalation of players salaries * the role of FIFA and UEFA in the struggle for control of world football * manifestations of racism and extreme nationalism in football, from the English medias xenophobic coverage of Euro 96 to the demonisation of Eric Cantona * media representations of national identity in football coverage in Germany, France and Spain * the interplay of national, religious and club identities among fans in England, Scotland, Ireland, Portugal and Scandinavia * the role of the law in regulating football * the future for supporters at a time when watching the match is more likely to mean turning on the television than going to a football ground.

Book excerpt: Using twenty years of wisdom distilled into seven choices, two bestselling authors show how to become impassioned, engaged, and indispensable at work. When you realize your career is a result of choices, and not conditions, the effect is absolutely liberating. You begin to think big and act bold. You become impassioned and engaged. Coworkers look to you for leadership and inspiration. You close the gap between the corporate culture you envision and the one in which you work. You become indispensable on the job. After twenty years of talking to America’s most innovative and unconventional business leaders and liberated employees, the Freibergs have distilled this collective wisdom into seven essential choices. If you’re ready to move from a life stuck in neutral to the freedom of seeing work as an exciting and passionate adventure, then BOOM! is your ticket. Expand your influence and engage in work that matters! Are you tired of blaming your unhappiness and lack of job satisfaction on others? Then it’s time to read Choice #2: Be Accountable—There Is No “THEY”—Only You and Me. Are you constantly asking negative, defensive questions like “Why is this happening to me?” Then it’s time to make Choice #4 Focus Forward—Your Future Is Not in the Rearview Mirror. Are you always tempted to play it safe and stay within your tightly define comfort zone? Then it’s time to embrace Choice #7: Risk More/Gain More—The World Isn’t Changed by Those Who Are Unwilling to Take Risks. Leadership doesn’t come from having an official title but from making choices: to serve others, take on risk, assume responsibility and discover a life where passion and excitement replace ho-hum routine. BOOM! is a wake-up call for every person who wants to make a difference and every business leader who wants to change the DNA of an organization doing business as usual. Praise for BOOM! “Every leader asks, ‘How can we motivate our people?’ The Freibergs get to the heart of what it takes to create engaged, indispensable, and results-oriented employees one choice at a time.” —Richard Floersch, Executive VP Worldwide HR, McDonald’s Corporation “In this breezy but helpful book, the Freibergs deliver with easy-to-act-on ideas and their spirited and irreverent voice. Make the choice to read it, and put yourself on course.” —Tim Sanders, author of Love is the Killer App: How to Win Business and Influence Friends

Book excerpt: In this acclaimed book, Alistair Moffat tells the story of a part of Scotland that has played a huge role in the nation's history and moved poets, painters and writers as well as ordinary people for hundreds of years. The hunter-gatherers who first penetrated the virgin interior, the Celtic warlords, the Romans, the Northumbrians and the Reivers, who dominated the Anglo-Scottish borderlands for over 300 years, have all had their part to play in the constantly evolving life of the area. It is the people of a place that make its history and Alistair Moffat's book is a testament to those who have made the Borders their home, and who have created the traditions, myths and romance that define it so strongly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overdue study of a groundbreaking event, this is the first book-length examination of the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857. Intended to rehabilitate Manchester's image at a heady time of economic prosperity, the Exhibition became a touchstone for aesthetic, social, and economic issues of the mid-nineteenth century. Reverberations of this moment can be followed to the present day in the discipline of art history and its practice in public museums of Europe and America. Highlighting the tension between art and commerce, philanthropy and profit, the book examines the Exhibition's organization and the presentation of the works of art in the purpose-built Art Treasures Palace. Pergam places the Exhibition in the context of contemporary debates about museum architecture and display. With an analysis of the reception of both "Ancient" and "Modern" paintings, the book questions the function of exhibitions in the construction of an art historical canon. The book also provides an essential reference tool: a compiled list of all of the paintings exhibited in 1857 that are now in public collections throughout the world, with an analysis of the collecting trends manifest in their provenance.

Book excerpt: When it comes to hot dogs, Hot Doug's head chef Doug Sohn is the master of the craft. His introduction of gourmet ingredients and professionally trained culinary flair to the world of encased meats has earned him national recognition and praise. In Hot Doug's: The Book, Sohn takes the reader on a fun, irreverent trip through the history of hot dogs, his restaurant, and the many patrons -- both famous and average Joe -- who have declared Sohn the king of dogs. As told through Sohn's own stories, this book will combine photos, favorite anecdotes, lessons learned, and lists ranging from general restaurant etiquette to most-repeated sausage double-entendres (Doug's heard 'em all). Stories included will reveal fact from the folklore of the restaurant's founding, retell the tale of Hot Doug's infamous 2006 run-in with Chicago City Hall, and even provide accounts of Hot Doug's-inspired tattoos, which if presented upon order privilege the bearer to free hot dogs for life. Contributions from some of Hot Doug's biggest fans will be spread throughout the book, with raves from Paul Kahan, Steve Albini, Dan Sinker, Mindy Segal, Homaro Cantu, Aziz Ansari, many other local and national figures, and an introduction from Graham Elliot.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1834 Antigua became the only British colony in the Caribbean to move directly from slavery to full emancipation. Immediate freedom, however, did not live up to its promise, as it did not guarantee any level of stability or autonomy, and the implementation of new forms of coercion and control made it, in many ways, indistinguishable from slavery. In Troubling Freedom Natasha Lightfoot tells the story of how Antigua's newly freed black working people struggled to realize freedom in their everyday lives, prior to and in the decades following emancipation. She presents freedpeople's efforts to form an efficient workforce, acquire property, secure housing, worship, and build independent communities in response to elite prescriptions for acceptable behavior and oppression. Despite its continued efforts, Antigua's black population failed to convince whites that its members were worthy of full economic and political inclusion. By highlighting the diverse ways freedpeople defined and created freedom through quotidian acts of survival and occasional uprisings, Lightfoot complicates conceptions of freedom and the general narrative that landlessness was the primary constraint for newly emancipated slaves in the Caribbean.
