Book excerpt: This book is based on the author’s work at the Double Chooz Experiment, from 2010 to 2013, the goal of which was to search for electronic anti-neutrino disappearance close to nuclear power plant facilities as a result of neutrino oscillation. Starting with a brief review of neutrino oscillation and the most important past experimental findings in this field, the author subsequently provides a full and detailed description of a neutrino detector, from simulation aspects to detection principles, as well as the data analysis procedure used to extract the oscillation parameters. The main results in this book are 1) an improvement on the mixing angle, θ13, uncertainty by combining two data-sets from neutrino event selection: neutron capture on gadolinium and on hydrogen; and 2) the first measurement of the effective squared mass difference by combining the current reactor neutrino experimental data from Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO and taking advantage of their different reactor-to-detector distances. The author explains how these methods of combining data can be used to estimate these two values. Each method results in the best possible sensitivity for the oscillation parameters with regard to reactor neutrinos. They can be used as a standard method on the latest data releases from the current experiments.

Book excerpt: This is a contribution paper from the Double Chooz (DC) experiment to the special issue of Nuclear Physics B on the topics of neutrino oscillations, celebrating the recent Nobel prize to Profs. T. Kajita and A.B. McDonald. DC is a reactor neutrino experiment which measures the last neutrino mixing angle [theta]13. In addition, the DC group presented an indication of disappearance of the reactor neutrinos at a baseline of similar to 1 km for the first time in 2011 and is improving the measurement of [theta]13. DC is a pioneering experiment of this research field. In accordance with the nature of this special issue, physics and history of the reactor-[theta]13 experiments, as well as the Double Chooz experiment and its neutrino oscillation analyses, are reviewed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrino oscillation is a phenomenon that occurs due to mixing between neutrino mass and flavor eigenstates. These oscillations are described by a mixing matrix, the smallest angle of which, [theta]13, remained unmeasured until recently, with the development of a new generation of reactor neutrino oscillation experiments, of which Double Chooz is one. The detection of neutrinos in such experiments is assailed by several types of backgrounds, which are caused by muons traversing in or near the detector, and which may degrade the sensitivity of the [theta]13 measurement. This thesis describes several techniques for vetoing these backgrounds, including hardware systems constructed to efficiently detect muons and veto their resulting events, and targeted software vetoes designed to cut background events. We additionally describe methods to measure the rate and spectrum of the background events remaining after vetoes have been applied. The background-reduced analysis results in a measurement of sin22[theta]13 = 0.091 +0.029-0.032.

Book excerpt: Neutrino oscillation (N.O.) is the only firm evidence of the physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics and is one of the hottest topics in elementary particle physics today. This book focuses on the N.O., from its history to the future prospects, from the basic theories to the experiments. Various phenomena of N.O. are described intuitively with thorough explanations of the fundamental physics behind well-known formulations. For example, while many textbooks start with a discussion of the mixing matrix, this book stresses that N.O. is caused by the transition amplitudes between different neutrino flavors, and that the purpose of N.O. experiments is to measure transition amplitudes and think of its origin. The current understanding of neutrino oscillation is also summarized using the most up-to-date measurements, including the recently measured neutrino mixing angle θ13, and the future prospects of N.O. studies are described as well. The level of this book makes it a bridge between introductory textbooks and scientific papers.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we estimate the sensitivity of Double Chooz, a reactor Ve --> Ve experiment, to detect "early" neutrino oscillations based on a three-active plus one-sterile, or (3 + 1), neutrino mixing model by implementing a least-squares fit to the simulated electron antineutrino reactor spectrum1 . By comparing the expected spectra from the null hypothesis and the (3 + 1) oscillation hypothesis at the Double Chooz near detector L = 200 m, we expect a modest sterile neutrino discovery potential, limited by the ~ 2% reactor flux uncertainty. This potential may be expanded by employing a Double Chooz-like detector at a very short baseline L = 6 m from the reactor. At both baselines, the p-value for the null hypothesis was extremely small p ~ 0.004, which is compelling evidence for rejecting this hypothesis. Very short baseline antineutrino oscillation reactor experiments may help to resolve the current global incompatibilities between neutrino and antineutrino data sets.

A number of experiments were designed to measure this parameter as it will have a significant impact on future neutrino oscillation research. One such experiment, Double Chooz, measures the disappearance of reactor antineutrinos with a single, 8.3 ton, gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator detector at a baseline of about 1km from two 4.25GW[th] nuclear power reactors located in Chooz, France. Current results from Double Chooz, along with other reactor and accelerator based experiments, have confirmed that [straight theta]13 is nonzero, and all measurements agree that sin2 (2[straight theta]13) [is approximately equal to] 0.1. In an independent analysis of 234.77 live days, including 6.84 live days when both reactors were off, a new technique was used to evaluate the Double Chooz data. In this analysis, a comparison between the observed and predicted detection rates as well as the energy spectra were used to determine a best fit of sin2(2[straight theta]13) = 0.105 ± 0.030. This measurement confirms, and improves upon, the results found by previous analyses. Excellent agreement is also found between this measurement and other experiments.

Book excerpt: Research in Neutrino Physics We describe here the recent activities of our two groups over the first year of this award (effectively November 2010 through January 2012) and our proposed activities and associated budgets for the coming grant year. Both of our groups are collaborating on the Double Chooz reactor neutrino experiment and are playing major roles in calibration and analysis. A major milestone was reached recently: the collaboration obtained the first result on the search for 13 based on 100 days of data from the far detector. Our data indicates that 13 is not zero; specifically the best fit of the neutrino oscillation hypothesis to our data gives sin2 (2 13) = 0.086 ± 0.041 (stat) ± 0.030 (syst) The null oscillation hypothesis is excluded at the 94.6% C.L. This result1 has been submitted to Physical Review Letters. As we continue to take data with the far detector in the coming year, in parallel with completing the construction of the near lab and installing the near detector, we expect the precision of our measurement to improve as we gather significantly more statistics, gain better control of backgrounds through use of partial power data and improved event selection, and better understand the detector energy scale and detection efficiency from calibration data. With both detectors taking data starting in the second half of 2013, we expect to further drive down the uncertainty on our measurement of sin2 (2 13) to less than 0.02. Stancu's group is also collaborating on the MiniBooNE experiment. Data taking is scheduled to continue through April, by which time 1.18 × 1021 POT is projected. The UA group is playing a leading role in the measurement of antineutrino cross sections, which should be the subject of a publication later this year as well as of Ranjan Dharmapalan's Ph. D. thesis, which he is expected to defend by the end of this year. It is time to begin working on projects which will eventually succeed Double Chooz and MiniBooNE as the main foci of our efforts. The Stancu group plans to become re-involved in LBNE and possibly also to join NO A, and the Busenitz group has begun to explore joining a direct dark matter search.

Book excerpt: Since neutrinos interact so weakly with matter, most of their basic properties are still largely unknown. One of the most important issues to be settled concerns their rest mass. We have no idea why neutrinos are so much lighter than their charged lepton partners; no fundamental symmetry in nature requires massless neutrinos. Massive neutrinos are demanded to explain the anomalous counting rate of experiments measuring the solar and the atmospheric neutrino fluxes. The discrepancy between experimental data and theoretical predictions can be accounted for in terms of neutrino oscillations, which would take place only in the case of massive neutrinos. The subject of this thesis is the search for neutrino oscillations in CHOOZ, the first long baseline experiment to explore a neutrino mass region where hints at neutrino oscillations came from the atmospheric neutrino anomaly.

Book excerpt: The measurement of the remaining neutrino-mixing angle, [theta]13, is a critical step toward further understanding of neutrino properties and to guide future neutrino oscillation experiments. Double Chooz has a unique opportunity to perform this measurement building on the original CHOOZ reactor anti-neutrino experiment, the experience that set the previous limits on [theta]13. In the first phase of Double Chooz, 101 days of data was analyzed with only the far detector operating of a two-detector plan. In this thesis I will describe the design of the low background neutrino detector and the oscillation analysis performed. From the deficiency between the expected and measured number of electron anti-neutrinos a value of sin2(2[theta]13) = 0.104 ± 0.03(stat) ± 0.076(syst) was found for rate only analysis and 0.086 ± 0.041(stat) ± 0.030(syst) with the rate and spectral energy shape analysis.
