Book excerpt: This forward-looking resource recasts the concept of healthy cities as not only a safe, pleasant, and green built environment, but also one that creates and sustains health by addressing social, economic, and political conditions. It describes collaborations between city planning and public health creating a contemporary concept of urban governance—a democratically-informed process that embraces values like equity. Models, critiques, and global examples illustrate institutional change, community input, targeted assessment, and other means of addressing longstanding sources of urban health challenges. In these ambitious pages, healthy cities are rooted firmly in the worldwide movement toward balanced and sustainable urbanization, developed not to disguise or displace entrenched health and social problems, but to encourage and foster solutions. Included in the coverage: Towards healthy urban governance in the century of the city“/li> Healthy cities emerge: Toronto, Ottawa, Copenhagen The role of policy coalitions in understanding community participation in healthy cities projects Health impact assessment at the local level The logic of method for evaluating healthy cities Plus: extended reports on healthy cities and communities in North and Latin America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East Healthy Cities will interest and inspire community leaders, activists, politicians, and entrepreneurs working to improve health and well-being at the local level, as well as public health and urban development scholars and professionals.

Book Synopsis Strategic Contracting for Health Systems and Services by : Eric de Roodenbeke
Download or read book Strategic Contracting for Health Systems and Services written by Eric de Roodenbeke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the start of the new century, efforts to strengthen health systems focused solely on the public sector and health programs overseen by public bodies. The private sector was sidelined in certain countries and even banned in others. At the same time, some private-sector stakeholders readily adapted themselves to this special situation so as to avoid becoming part of a structured health system. This volume notes profound changes in health care around the world in two areas. The stakeholders involved in the health sector are increasing in number and diversifying as a result of the development of the private sector. They are also responding to a process of democratization and decentralization. These developments have been paralleled by greater functional differentiation. Various stakeholders are increasingly specializing in particular areas of the health system: service delivery, procurement, management, financing, and regulation. The interdependence of health stakeholders becomes more evident along with the increased complexity of delivery systems as these respond to changing demand. There is a compelling need to forge relationships. Such relationships are in fact emerging in developed countries and, more recently, in developing countries. They may be informal, but are increasingly organized and structured.

Book Synopsis Everyday Mobility and Health by : Julie Vallee
Download or read book Everyday Mobility and Health written by Julie Vallee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday mobility is neither favorable nor unfavorable to health. While it can facilitate social interactions, increase access to remote services, or encourage physical activity, it can also generate pollution, promote the spread of epidemics or cause traffic accidents. This book presents different facets of the relationship between daily mobility and health, focusing on the environments (geographical, social and political) that people live and move around in. It analyzes the role of mobility in the mechanisms of environmental exposure and diffusion, as well as the resulting health inequalities. It deals with active modes of travel (mainly walking and cycling) and the local contexts that are conducive to them. Finally, it offers a critical reading of the place given to everyday mobility in policies to combat obesity and rationalize regional healthcare provision.

Book Synopsis Making and Unmaking Public Health in Africa by : Ruth J. Prince
Download or read book Making and Unmaking Public Health in Africa written by Ruth J. Prince and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa has emerged as a prime arena of global health interventions that focus on particular diseases and health emergencies. These are framed increasingly in terms of international concerns about security, human rights, and humanitarian crisis. This presents a stark contrast to the 1960s and ‘70s, when many newly independent African governments pursued the vision of public health “for all,” of comprehensive health care services directed by the state with support from foreign donors. These initiatives often failed, undermined by international politics, structural adjustment, and neoliberal policies, and by African states themselves. Yet their traces remain in contemporary expectations of and yearnings for a more robust public health. This volume explores how medical professionals and patients, government officials, and ordinary citizens approach questions of public health as they navigate contemporary landscapes of NGOs and transnational projects, faltering state services, and expanding privatization. Its contributors analyze the relations between the public and the private providers of public health, from the state to new global biopolitical formations of political institutions, markets, human populations, and health. Tensions and ambiguities animate these complex relationships, suggesting that the question of what public health actually is in Africa cannot be taken for granted. Offering historical and ethnographic analyses, the volume develops an anthropology of public health in Africa. Contributors:Hannah Brown, P. Wenzel Geissler, Murray Last, Rebecca Marsland, Lotte Meinert, Benson A. Mulemi, Ruth J. Prince, Noémi Tousignant, and Susan Reynolds Whyte
Book Synopsis Expérience de Participation Des Groupes de Femmes Dans la Planification Régionale Des Services Sociaux Et de Santé Au Québec by : Jocelyne Bernier

This book was released on 2003 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploratory study examines the participation of women's groups in regional planning of health and social services in Quebec with the purpose of identifying problems and successes in their relations with regional health and social services boards (RHSSBs). The report begins with a description of the commitments with respect to the status of women included in regional services organization plans for the 1998-2002 period, and the organizational structure introduced by the RHSSBs to ensure implementation of these commitments. It then presents a descriptive-comparative analysis of the situation in 4 regions in order to contrast the intra-regional dynamics and to identify indices with respect to the observed differences in the planning and programming of services and in the interactions of RHSSBs with women's groups. The report concludes with recommendations for promoting gender equality in regional health and social services planning.
