The Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV- 1) is capable of measuring three-dimensional velocities. The ADV- 1 measures velocities from 0 to 2.5 m/s at a sampling rate of up to 25 Hz. The measurements are made in a sampling volume located 5 cm in front of the probe. Since this instrument is new, the objective is to compare the ADV-1 with other laboratory current meters and prepare operational guidelines for the ADV-1 system. Three-dimensional velocities are measured in a wave tank with the ADV-1 horizontal velocity average 0.9 cm/s higher than the laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) and the ADV-1 vertical velocity average 0.93 cm/s lower than the LDA. A horizontal velocity profile is measured in a wave flume by the ADV-1 and a pitot tube, and the instruments differ by 3.5 %. Measuring velocity profiles around a stationary cylinder with the ADV-1 in the wave flume was highly successful, showing the ability of this instrument to measure velocities near structures in future laboratory research. The ADV-1 is portable and can be used for extended periods without recalibration. (jg).

Book excerpt: This book concerns the presentation of particle velocity measurement for acoustics using lasers, including Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV or Anemometry (LDA)) and Particle Imagery Velocimetry (PIV). The objective is first to present the importance of measuring the acoustic velocity, especially when the acoustic equations are nonlinear as well as characterizing the near fields. However, these applications need to use non-invasive sensors. Some optical techniques, initially developed for fluid mechanics, have been adapted to the field of acoustics in recent years. This book summarizes 15 years of research in this area, highlighting the improvements that have been made, particularly in signal processing, and showing applications for which they have proven to be a carrier of innovation.

Book excerpt: The degree to which Acoustic-Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and expendable bathythermograph (XBT) data can provide quantitative measurements of the velocity structure and transport of the Gulf Stream is addressed. An algorithm is used to generate salinity from temperature and depth using an historical Temperature/Salinity relation for the NW Atlantic. Results have been simulated using CTD data and comparing real and pseudo salinity files. Errors are typically less than 2 dynamic cm for the upper 800 m out of a total signal of 80 cm (across the Gulf Stream). When combined with ADCP data for a near-surface reference velocity, transport errors in isopycnal layers are less than about 1 Sv (10 to the 6th power cu m/s), as is the difference in total transport for the upper 800 m between real and pseudo data. The method is capable of measuring the real variability of the Gulf Stream, and when combined with altimeter data, can provide estimates of the geoid slope with oceanic errors of a few parts in 10 to the 8th power over horizontal scales of 500 km. Book excerpt: Acoustic properties, such as the characteristic impedance and the complex propagation constant, of porous materials have been traditionally characterized based on pressure-based measurement techniques using microphones. Although the microphone techniques have evolved since their introduction, the most general form of the microphone technique employs two microphones in characterizing the acoustic field for one continuous medium. The shortcomings of determining the acoustic field based on only two microphones can be overcome by using numerous microphones. However, the use of a number of microphones requires a careful and intricate calibration procedure. This dissertation uses laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) to establish a new measurement technique which can resolve issues that microphone techniques have: First, it is based on a single sensor, thus the calibration is unnecessary when only overall ratio of the acoustic field is required for the characterization of a system. This includes the measurements of the characteristic impedance and the complex propagation constant of a system. Second, it can handle multiple positional measurements without calibrating the signal at each position. Third, it can measure three dimensional components of velocity even in a system with a complex geometry. Fourth, it has a flexible adaptability which is not restricted to a certain type of apparatus only if the apparatus is transparent. LDA is known to possess several disadvantages, such as the requirement of a transparent apparatus, high cost, and necessity of seeding particles. The technique based on LDA combined with a curvefitting algorithm is validated through measurements on three systems. First, the complex propagation constant of the air is measured in a rigidly terminated cylindrical pipe which has very low dissipation. Second, the radiation impedance of an open-ended pipe is measured. These two parameters can be characterized by the ratio of acoustic field measured at multiple locations. Third, the power dissipated in a variable RLC load is measured. The three experiments validate the LDA technique proposed. The utility of the LDA method is then extended to the measurement of the complex propagation constant of the air inside a 100 ppi reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) sample. Compared to measurements in the available studies, the measurement with the 100 ppi RVC sample supports the LDA technique in that it can achieve a low uncertainty in the determined quantity. This dissertation concludes with using the LDA technique for modal decomposition of the plane wave mode and the (1,1) mode that are driven simultaneously. This modal decomposition suggests that the LDA technique surpasses microphone-based techniques, because they are unable to determine the acoustic field based on an acoustic model with unconfined propagation constants for each modal component.

Book excerpt: Pulsed ultrasound Doppler velocimetry proved to be capable of measuring velocities accurately (relative error less than 0.5 percent). In this research, the limitations of the method are investigated when measuring: in channels with a small thickness compared to the transducer diameter, at low velocities and in the presence of a flow reversal area. A review of the fundamentals of pulsed ultrasound Doppler velocimetry reveals that the accuracy of the measured velocity field mainly depends on the shape of the acoustic beam through the flow field and the intensity of the echo from the incident particles where the velocity is being measured. The ultrasonic transducer turned out to be most critical component of the system. Fundamental limitations of the method are identified. With ultrasonic beam measurements, the beam shape and echo intensity is further investigated. In general, the shape of the ultrasonic beam varies depending on the frequency and diameter of the emitter as well as the characteristics of the acoustic interface that the beam encounters. Moreover, the most promising transducer to measure velocity profiles in small channels is identified. Since the application of pulsed ultrasound Doppler velocimetry often involves the propagation of the ultrasonic burst through Plexiglas, the effect of Plexiglas walls on the measured velocity profile is analyzed and quantified in detail. The transducers ringing effect and the saturation region caused by highly absorbing acoustic interfaces are identified as limitations of the method. By comparing measurement results in the small rectangular channel to numerically calculated results, further limitations of the method are identified. It was not possible to determine velocities correctly throughout the whole channel at low flow rates, in small geometries and in the flow separation region. A discrepancy between the maximum measured velocity, velocity profile perturbations and incorrect velocity determination at the far channel wall were main shortcomings. Measurement results are improved by changes in the Doppler angle, the flow rate and the particle concentration. Suggestions to enhance the measurement system, especially its spatial resolution, and to further investigate acoustic wave interactions are made.

Book excerpt: Acoustic Doppler velocity meters (ADVMs) provide an alternative to more traditional flow measurement devices and procedures such as flumes, weirs, and stage-rating for open channels. However, the requirements for correct calibration are extensive and complex. In this dissertation, two original independent projects were undertaken to accomplish a similar goal: to improve the accuracy of ADVM without the need for in situ calibration. For the first, a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to design a subcritical rapidly varied flow (RVF) contraction that provides a consistent, linear relationship between the upward-looking ADVM sample velocity and the cross-sectional average velocity, in order to improve non-calibrated ADVM accuracy. CFD simulations validated the subcritical contraction in a rectangular and trapezoidal cross section by showing errors within +1.8% and -2.2%. Physical testing of the subcritical contraction coupled with an upward-looking ADVM in a large rectangular flume provides laboratory validation with measurement errors within +/-4% without calibration. In the second project, an algorithm is developed for real-time estimation of the cross-sectional average velocity of a channel flow using an upward-looking pulsed wave ADVM. The Velocity Contour Weighting Method (VCWM) is applicable to gradually varied flows in prismatic channels (without the RVF contraction). VCWM estimates the average velocity as a weighted average of ADVM bin velocities. Weights are based partly on the flow geometry and partly on the velocity distribution sampled by the ADVM. Collectively, these two factors enable the VCWM to adapt to a relatively wide range of channel geometry and roughness features which fall within the range of those used to develop the algorithm. Expressions for the velocity weights are devised by first applying a validated 3D computation fluid dynamics (CFD) channel flow model to a wide range of flow scenarios including differing channel geometries, discharge rates, depths, and boundary roughness, which is then reduced empirically with the aid of dimensional analysis to obtain velocity weight equations. Application of the method to a large rectangular flume and field testing in trapezoidal irrigation canals shows that the VCWM predicts the average velocity with an error less than +/-5.5%.

Book excerpt: Accurate velocity of an ocean going vessel with respect to the water can be determined in real time by utilizing a Doppler Current Profiler (DCP) system. The DCP employs multiple sonar beams with a plurality of bins or returns from various depth segments. These returns are then statistically processed to attain stable and accurate velocity information. The process is performed without any temporal averaging allowing it to be employed where raw data requirements must be met such as the damping of inertial navigation systems.
