Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doppler Effect can be thought of as the change in frequency of a wave for an observer moving relative to the source of the wave. In radar, it is used to measure the velocity of detected objects. This highly practical resource provides thorough working knowledge of the micro-Doppler effect in radar, including its principles, applications and implementation with MATLAB codes. The book presents code for simulating radar backscattering from targets with various motions, generating micro-Doppler signatures, and analyzing the characteristics of targets. In this title, professionals will find detailed descriptions of the physics and mathematics of the Doppler and micro-Doppler effect. The book provides a wide range of clear examples, including an oscillating pendulum, a spinning and precession heavy top, rotating rotor blades of a helicopter, rotating wind-turbine blades, a person walking with swinging arms and legs, a flying bird, and movements of quadruped animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines in detail the role of transfontanellar pulsed and color Doppler imaging in the fetus and neonate. After an introductory chapter its use in the normal neonate is considered. Results of the hemodynamic evaluation of 491 newborns aged from 32 weeks of gestation to 9 months by means of pulsed and color Doppler are reported. Normal values of the resistive index as determined by this technique are documented, and systolic, diastolic, and mean velocities in seven different vessels are presented. It is concluded that Doppler ultrasonography enables reliable analysis of arterial and venous velocities. Subsequent chapters examine the use of transfontanellar Doppler imaging in a variety of commonly encountered pathological conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides essential information for using quantitative Doppler echocardiography in routine clinical cardiological practice. It translates complex concepts and formulations into practical, easily understood evaluations that will allow any properly equipped echocardiographic laboratory to enjoy the rewards of "quantitative" cardiac Doppler. The book is organized so that physical-physiological mechanisms and methods are presented first and then their practical applications are emphasized for various anatomical sites in the cardiovascular system. Chapter summaries are provided to allow readers to rapidly review the most pertinent information contained within each chapterr. The book's first four chapters deal basically with the fundamental mechanisms that affect clinical evaluations, such as basic formulations, pressure gradients, pressure half-times, and time velocity integrals. Remaining chapters discuss the anatomical areas of the heart and great vessels. Appendix A presents "technical tips" relative to the performance of the Doppler examination. Appendix B provides helpful blank "worksheets" and valvular and hemodynamic abnormalities. Appendix C presents an easy reference to normal and abnormal echo-Doppler values. Both cardiology students and practicing professionals will find this book indispensable for help with upgrading the level of noninvasive diagnostic capabilities in their Doppler echocardiographic labs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now 150 years ago, on 25th May 1842, that the son of a Salzburg ston emason presented a scientific work "On the coloured light of the double stars and certain other heavenly bodies" at a meeting of the Royal Bo hemian Society of Sciences held in Prague. Christian Andreas Doppler, then professor at the Prague Technical Institute, set a milestone in scien tific history in the meeting room of the Royal Society in the Charles Uni versity, just a few meters from the National Theatre where another genius from Salzburg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, had celebrated his musical triumph with the premiere of his opera Don Giovanni fifty-five years earlier. Doppler's lecture set out in brilliant simplicity what we now call the Doppler principle, which since has found numerous uses in astronomy, which was of primary interest to Christian Doppler. In addition, it has found countless practical applications in physics, navigation, aeronautics, geodesy, medicine, science and technology. In medicine alone, Doppler sonography is now an established diagnostic procedure in the fields of childbirth, cardiology and diseases of the blood vessels, neurology, neuro surgery and vascular surgery, and is continually finding new medical appli cations in today's world of high technology.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doppler ultrasound is a hot topic at the present time. This is because studies of the uteroplacental and fetal circulation give fundamental information as to the physiology or pathology of placental function and the response of the fetal circulation to hypoxaemia. Dr. Arabin's clinical studies which are described in this book are an important contribution to knowledge in this field and will be of enormous interest not only to researches but also to clini cians interested in learning how this latest technology can be integrated into their clinical practice. London STUART CAMPBELL Foreword Although only three decades old, the field of perinatal medicine is marked by continuous new advances. Ultrasound diagnostic techniques comprise an important element of this new field. Dr. Arabin has taken the initiative to investigate the functional-diagnostic aspects of ultrasound. Among other things, she has further developed and refined the concept of "oxygen-con serving adaptation of fetal circulation" which originated in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Neukolln Hospital Center in 1966. She thus has been able to show that the most reliable Doppler blood flow meas urement predictors of a high risk to the fetus are (1) a decrease in the flow volume of the descending thoracic aorta and the umbilical artery and (2) an increase in the flow volume of the common carotid arteries.
