Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doomed Religions In selecting the subjects of essays the editor in tended chiefly to serve the cause of missions, and in a like spirit the writers have responded to his call. He trusts they will be rewarded for their very able papers by an extensive and appreciative reading. His own part in the volume has been very huinble, largely one of correspondence, proofreading, etc, etc. Even for the preliminary essay he claims no originality, having freely used the authorities at his hand. It is his joy to have supplied, in the very best way, a long-felt want; and he sends out these treatises, confident that they will be of great interest and service to a large class of intelligent Christians. The Theology of Mediaevalism is dead beyond recovery. The furious storm of criticism and conflict, which raged for a century or more, has abated, and left amid the debris and ruin of ancient error the relics of prophetic truth on which the superstructure of Higher Criticism and Scientific Reconstruction can be reared. It has been the effort of the author of this book to outline a system of interpretation, which, while it denudes the ancient Christian structure of its gargoyles of superstition and metaphysical phantasy, retains sufficient of its framework to evidence its original purity of purpose, and its kinship with all other similar efforts of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religions of Authority, and the Religion of the Spirit Tms volume forms a sequel to the work which the author published in 1897, under the title, Outlines of a Philosophy of Religion based upon Psychology and History. Two systems of theology still confront one another: the theology of authority and the theology of experience. They are characterised by methods radically opposed in the scientific development of religious ideas and Christian dogmas. To the solution of the question of method the present work is consecrated. At the present hour one method is dying and destined soon to disappear; the other is taking on ever more vigorous development, and is destined to triumph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of the World: An Outline of the Great Religious Systems The following conclusions will probably occur to the reader: (1) There is a measure of good in each of the great religions; (2) It is not true that one religion is as good as another; (3) The Christian religion alone is altogether good; (4) The false systems cannot be regarded as progressive steps toward the true; (5) The true religion derives little or nothing from the false It gives a light to every age; it gives, but borrows none (6) The false philosophies which are from time to time advanced against the Christian religion are nearly or quite all borrowed from the erroneous sys tems of the past; (7) Christianity is the absolute re ligion; that is, it is wholly free from error and contains all good; (8) It alone reveals the true God (9) It alone presents the ideal man; (10) It alone suggests a plan for the reconciliation of guilty man and offended God; (i I) It is the only moral system; (12) It is fair, there fore, to regard it as final; (i 3) It is destined to be the universal religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Religions, Vol. 2: Judaism, Christianity, Mohammedanism Each of them, conceiving itself as the one true religion, attributes to itself finality, and believes itself destined to universality. In them all the ideal of universality assumed political forms. In Judaism, indeed, the dream of ruling over the nations of the earth in the name of the Lord never had a chance to translate itself into historical reality or even into essay. But in Christianity and Islam the idea of empire as the embodiment of religion dominated centuries of history, and ruthless wars of conquest glorified themselves as the victories of the faith. A further consequence of the ideal of exclusive universality in Christendom was the prin ciple that a Christian state should not tolerate within it any other religion than Christianity, nor any other kind of Christianity than the one true kind. Religious liberty logi cally involves the secularisation of the state. In modern times the expansion of both Christianity and Islam has been by commerce, missions, and colonisation rather than by conquest, but commerce and missions have often been but steps to protection, occupation, and annexa tion by Christian states. The belief in ultimate universality must persist as long as each believes itself the one true reli gion, and so long as it persists the religions must strive in the ways of the time to achieve their universal destiny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doom of the Majority of Mankind The great discussions in theology, both in England and America, during the last few years, have turned mainly upon two points. The first of these is the relation of humanity to the Future Life. In England the discussion on this subject was powerfully stimulated by Canon Farrar's book, "Eternal Hope." In America the debate, rekindled by this book, received a new direction and an independent impulse from the so-called Andover Controversy; one result of which was that an Orthodox clergyman, called to a professorship by the Trustees of that institution, was denied confirmation by the Board of Visitors, because of his charitable speculations on this subject. Candidates for ordination were afterwards excluded from Orthodox pulpits for the same reason. A conspicuous feature in this discussion has related to the destiny of those - involving the great majority of the race - who have no opportunity in this life to accept or even to become acquainted with the Orthodox theory of salvation. With this question before it, the American Board, at its last annual missionary meeting at Portland, refused to concede that the heathen might have a probation after death, and reaffirmed the motive for missionary work to be the necessity of saving them from an endless hell. In a system which assumed an attitude of fierce hostility towards other systems attention is necessarily directed to what was similar and what was dissimilar in their respective institutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Religious Feeling: A Question of Miracles in the Soul The deductions made from this assumption are of the gravest import. It is alleged, or im plied, that those who have had the experience of conversion are the chosen of God, that they are so changed in nature as to have become new crea tures, are the children of God, and are destined to an eternity of blessedness; while those who have not had the experience are the rejected of God, are children of Satan, and are destined to an eternity of woe.
