Book excerpt: Phil Pepe spent years as the New York Daily News Yankee beat reporter, rubbing shoulders with countless Yankee greats, from Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra to Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. While he was there to report on the action that occurred on the field, as well as the many disruptions occurring in the locker room—especially during the tumultuous seventies when Billy Martin and the “Boss” were constantly at one another’s throats—that directly affected the team’s performance on the field, Pepe also saw a world that never made the papers. Yankee Doodles humanizes the legends we have come to love and worship. We get to know the players as Pepe did, once the lights and cameras were turned off. For instance, Pepe recounts the story of Jackson’s miraculous three homerun World Series game when, in his exhilaration, Jackson literally gave Pepe the pants off his butt! This simple story shows a side of Reggie Jackson—a Yankees superstar—that reminds us that these men are often nothing more than boys playing a game they love. Other favorites include the time Pepe went shopping with Berra, who was looking for a birthday present for his wife; the day Yankees pitchers Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich swapped wives, children, homes and even pet dogs; when Mantle graciously paid for a stranger’s dinner; and so much more! This book offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at some of the greatest Yankee heroes. It is a must-read for Yankee fans and baseball lovers alike! Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: Indigenous History Is American History Our Way: A Parallel History dispels the myths, stereotypes, and absence of information about American Indian, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian people in the master narrative of US history. For most of American history, stories of the country's Indigenous Peoples were either ignored or told by outsiders. This book corrects these errors, exploring the ways in which Indigenous cultures from every corner of the nation have influenced American society from the past into the present, reminding the reader that they have both shaped the US and continue to play a vital role in its story. Significantly, Our Way: A Parallel History is a collaboration of Native scholars representing more than ten Indigenous nations, sharing their histories and their cultures. Each contributor, either an affiliate of an institution of higher education or a prominent Native leader, provides the reader with an inside account of tribal culture and heritage. The result is a comprehensive resource restoring the histories of Indigenous Peoples and their nations to their rightful place in the story of America. The book covers topics such as: -The Doctrine of Discovery -Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act -US American Indian Policy and Civil rights -Blood Quantum -Selling Hawaii -Lots More As Julie Cajune (Salish) notes in the preface, "I believe this collection of history, story, and reflection provokes and invites us to think and feel deeply about what it means for all of us to be human in our communities, nations, and beyond. After all, that is what a good story does.

Every single day, for over three years, he created a watercolor illustration and wrote a short essay about whatever came to mind that day and posted it on his blog. These are some of the collected favorites along with some brand new musings. With over 180 illustrations, this book is part personal memoir and sometimes just a randomly fun romp through the sillier bits of this crazy world we all inhabit. Written to take on the impossible task of inspiring creativity, unleashing your inner child, and instilling hope, it will, at the very least, make you smile and touch your heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you imagine walking from California to Florida in just over a year? If you could, what would be the purpose? One reason would be to spend the maximum amount of time possible spreading the word about the work of a non-profit organization called Love Justice International, but at the time it was called Tiny Hands International. It is their business to prevent people from being trafficked, then spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them. This was something that I had to be a part of. The original idea was to kick in doors where victims of trafficking were being held against their will, fist or gunfight with the bad guys then run out of that place with the rescuee on my shoulders. Lo and behold, that didn’t happen. Raising money by becoming an advocate of human trafficking prevention seemed more appropriate. So how else would you raise money for such a great cause? By attempting a great feat of course. Instead of being in hand to hand combat with the traffickers, there were many nights spent sleeping on the side of the road eating cold food out of a can. Instead of sleeping under a safe roof at night, it was sleeping in the dirt of the wild. Countless opportunities were made by telling others about Love Justice and the work they were doing. From genuine homeless people generously handing over a single dollar to the wealthy giving hundreds at a time. This is a recollection of everyone who made this journey possible in the attempt to fund the rescue or prevention of 1600 trafficked victims.

Book excerpt: Dustin rides a ton of beef battling to do away with his rider while Shane makes certain the bull doesn't succeed—and that's the easiest part of their relationship. Dustin Lewis is a barely contained twenty-one-year-old bull rider who was disowned by his parents when his father discovered Dustin with another teenage boy. He has spent the time since traveling the rodeo circuit and, after years of honing his skills, he's in contention to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Shane Rees is a twenty-six-year-old rodeo bullfighter-rodeo clown. While Shane's family still love their son, they are not pleased with the sexuality they believe he chose. He knows the potential consequences of being gay among the rodeo crowd. As a result, Shane keeps his sexuality a guarded secret. When combined with the scars he's earned over the years of bullfighting, Shane has little sense of self-worth. The two meet when Dustin's draw for the night is Diablo, the same vicious bull that gave Shane his most notable scar. Dustin's ride ends with him trapped in the rigging as the bull tries to pound him into the arena dust. With a good bit of bravado and nerves that have earned him a reputation among the bull riders, Shane frees Dustin before he is seriously injured. This chance meeting leads them through heartwarming highs and near-crushing lows as they struggle toward their goal of winning the National Finals and maintaining their personal relationship
