Book Synopsis Equitable Education and Ghettoized Voices by : June A. Douglas
Download or read book Equitable Education and Ghettoized Voices written by June A. Douglas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book centres the voices of a group of marginalized residents in Grenada’s ghetto to examine questions of poverty and survival and how, within this context, residents are able to focus on improvement and equity for their children through education. As a developing nation in the Caribbean influenced by both its British colonial past and its proximity to the United States, Grenada is still rife with poverty, and access to quality education is limited. The author examines this tradition of the ghetto as the centre of community and a force for positivity among youth, and develops a theory of education and deficit poverty through examples of citizens living in a developing state. Using functionalism, life course, and other systems theories, the book examines how institutions can support communities, and, in contrast, how families in poverty support themselves in the wake of system failure, to the extent that some children become successful university graduates, entrepreneurs, and world travellers. A cutting analysis of the development of equity through education in states left behind by colonialism and globalisation, this book offers new understandings of survival and criminality caused by deficit poverty. It will appeal to scholars, faculty, and researchers with interests in international education, education and globalisation, small island states, life course theory, systems theory, and anthropology.

Download or read book In Due Season written by Carol S. Batey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Due Season:Destiny is Calling Your Soul is an account of my personal transformation and purpose on this earth. The title "In Due Season", comes from the Bible, Galatins 6:9; "And let not us grow weary while doing good, for in time we shall reap, if we do not lose heart." Many have asked how to identify the purpose of their journey. They have asked how to make time to accomplish their purpose and where the money will come from. To uncover your personal transformation, you first start with a desire to create. Next, a spiritual practice of meditating, fasting and prayer, journaling, being still and listening, and physical exercising and proper nutrients will help transfrom your path. The first chapter is about the start of my journey to complete healing, wholeness and health. Second, how daily workouts, along with wholesome foods, helped to shape my weight loss and my personal journey. The 3rd chapter tells of how my soul got ready for a new perfoming arts career. Living out my childhood dreams that I carried for 39 years. 4th chapter asks are we ever too old to live out our dreams and passions in this lifetime? It's Carol's season now and yours! Last, how to identify your calling, purpose, or mission on this earth.

Download or read book Sunset over Happy Farm written by Mark Thomas McDonough and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the surface, Derrick James is a mild mannered socially awkward attorney, who works a modest federal government job. While Derrick lacks any particular legal acumen or academic prowess, and possesses modest legal writing skills, everywhere he goes and whatever he does, Derrick inevitably and always makes his way to the top of the pyramid. Possessing an unflappable mental skill set and seldom suffering fools lightly, he accomplishes what needs to be done and he does it superbly well, much to the chagrin of his peers. In the twilight of his legal career, Derrick finds himself working in perhaps one of the most boring brain-numbing federal legal jobs one can possibly imagine, but it’s inside work – no heavy lifting – and the pay is pretty good too. Finally! Derrick relaxes satisfied with who he and where he is. Life reaches a comfortable working rhyme. Both daughters are in college. After many down years, he is finally setting aside some extra money for retirement. Life is good, that is, right up to the very moment that a group of jealous federal supervisors and co-workers ban together forcing him to accept a forced early retirement. Now having abundant free time, Derrick travels the world, begins a ‘get out of debt’ project and ponders how he got to ‘here’. In doing all of this, he constantly runs into the ghosts of his past most of which is rooted in his ill-fated youth spent growing up in a Catholic Orphanage, which he facetiously nicknames “The Happy Farm”. Within the realm of his forced retirement and even as life’s ghosts taunt him, Derrick finds that truth and hindsight are not necessarily friends, but with enough time and grit, he finds that, by accepting his past, he can finally accept his present, and in doing so he finally says good bye to all the enemies, all the friends and all the ghosts that haunt him, as the sun sets over The Happy Farm.

Book excerpt: Well-apparel'd April on the heel of limping Winter treads ~ William Shakespeare Blake and Shelby Gunner are confronted with two unlawful killings in this fifth installment of the Double Barrel Mysteries. It is spring in Port Scuttlebutt. The icy banks of Lake Superior are thawing, the forest is budding with new growth, and Shelby is overdue to give birth to their first child. Knowing they need the work, Detective Jackson throws Double Barrel Investigations the bone of a new case. An elderly couple's guard dog is shot on their own land and the owners want someone to pay. Blake suspects a near-sighted poacher, but after an ongoing feud comes to light between the couple and nearby neighbors, he realizes a whole lot more is going on. Farley Jones, the self-appointed mayor of Port Scuttlebutt, has made an ever-expanding enemy base. So, it's not surprising there are suspects aplenty when he turns up dead in a celebrity's fishing cabin. Getting justice for the most-hated man in town won't be easy or comfortable for Blake and Shelby, especially when they have to treat everyone like potential murderers. Even their own friends and family.
