Book excerpt: Earl “Dusty” Trimmer relates with both skill and personal experience events surrounding our most forgetable and misunderstood war in America’s history. He brings it all home with his down-to-earth style and considerable knowledge. In Unbreakable Hearts, Dusty dives into the Vietnamese history and culture and skillfully brings the reader into understanding our Vietnamese enemy’s amazing resolve. He brilliantly explains the evolution of our Vietnamese enemy over hundreds of years of invasions and wars. Always defending their country to remain free became an art. In Chapter 7, Dusty describes the Vietnamese women fighters as “Hellcats.” My own experience with the formidable Vietnamese Viet Cong women’s skills and expertise closely mirrors Dusty’s. Hooch girls could plant booby traps in a GI’s hooch with a skill and savvy they were forced to learn during decades of on-the-job training in continuous wars with unwelcomed invaders. My own Military Police experience after leaving the infantry revealed these incidents vividly. In later chapters, Dusty moves into our own veterans’ profound resolve and toughness. North Vietnam’s famed General Giap called us “an honorable enemy.” One could suggest from this writing that our enemy taught us well. We did things in the Vietnam War the average person would have to go to the movies to believe. After reading Trimmer’s descriptions, I must conclude that indeed this book could be one for the movie industry. Dusty Trimmer brings to life our days and nights living and fighting in these foreboding jungle warfare conditions. After reading this fine work and reflecting on my own experiences, I cut away a little more of the pain. Pride swells for having served with all of these wonderful veterans of the Vietnam War. Pain for our terrible losses. For myself, these experiences culminated in wisdom I would otherwise have failed to achieve. God bless Dusty for telling our story. Forward march, Brothers!

Book excerpt: When Nancy Myers starts her New Life in the mountains with a wild leap of faith and a cordless drill in her back pocket, she discovers: a) working stuff out as you go along tends to bite you in the ass b) men who look good in rain boots are Dangerous c) it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for neighbors when bathing naked in your sheep trough "Tait offers an auspicious and cute premise, a scorchingly hot romance, and a highly original setting." – The Booklife Prize Nancy’s having a hard time. Her career trajectory has flatlined, she’s just been jilted for a prettier, more limber girl-woman, and her car is starting to look like an attractive housing option. But Nancy has a secret weapon. Desperation. Determined to make a fresh start (one that on no account features men of the falling-in-love-with variety), she purchases a rural property on a whim at the foot of a mountain range and attempts to settle into country life. She finds the vista of the alps healing. She also finds a tall, dark, farming stranger (who proves to be therapeutic in other ways). But when she discovers her precious view is about to be taken away, Nancy faces a hard choice. Should she play saboteur to protect her own happiness, even if it means losing the man who just might possibly be the key to it? Maybe her fresh start is actually a false start. Or maybe she’s learning a thing or two about how to be a kick-ass, self-reliant woman. “This is chick-lit at its best. Merren Tait has written a genuinely funny novel.” – Readers’ Favorite If you like boy-next-door, annoyances-to-lovers romance, you'll love the first book in Merren Tait's award-winning Good Life series. It contains many experiences that I have been through. As well as few surprises here and there. There is also some fictional writing in there, however none of that is written in a poetical sense and you'll be able to spot it fairly easily. I have attempted to convey some meaning from life into some of the stories that I have lived through. I just hope that you the reader will find some enjoyment from them!

Book excerpt: A British agent is drawn to Berlin’s bridge of spies in this “superlative Cold War espionage story” from the author of the acclaimed Inspector Troy Novels (The Seattle Times). It’s the summer of 1961, and the inscrutable Khrushchev is developing plans for something that could change the course of the Cold War. As he and Kennedy gamble with the fate of millions of lives, Cockney East-Ender-turned-spy Joe Wilderness is thrust into the conflict. Enlisted by MI6 to set up shop in Berlin, Wilderness returns to the city where he spent his postwar years, where a former paramour is under threat, and where the dividing line between the West and the Soviets will soon be crossed. As the Russians start building the wall, two agents find themselves trapped on opposing sides: an unfortunate Englishman in the Lubyanka in Moscow, and a KGB operative in London’s Wormwood Scrubs. Now, Wilderness has a new mission: Swap the prisoners on Berlin’s bridge of spies. But, as a former black marketer, Wilderness is also working a personal angle—just to make it interesting, just to make it profitable, just to make it a little more dangerous. What can possibly go wrong? Named by the Daily Telegraph as one of “50 Crime Writers to Read before You Die,” John Lawton is “quite possibly the best historical novelist we have” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). “[The Joe Wilderness novels] are meticulously researched, tautly plotted, historical thrillers in the mold of . . . Alan Furst, Phillip Kerr, Eric Ambler, David Downing and Joseph Kanon.” —The Wall Street Journal “Rich, inventive, surprising, informed, bawdy, cynical, heartbreaking and hilarious. However much you know about postwar Berlin, Lawton will take you deeper into its people, conflicts and courage. . . . Spy fiction at its best.” —The Washington Post

Book excerpt: 1 May 1976. Thirteen-year- old ‘Minnie’ Hargreaves is murdered, and her body half buried on a building site at the edge of Holme Hill, a village in West Yorkshire where she lived with her parents. David Harrison, a near-neighbour, is convicted of the crime and sentenced to life imprisonment. He dies in prison. 43 years later, Holme Hill becomes the scene of two more murders: Rhys Williams, a lonely old widower, found on a bench by the village cricket ground. A week later Peter Smith is found face down at the organ in Salem Chapel. Both corpses have a quotation from the Bible pinned to them, along with dates - the first two when Williams and Smith were murdered; the last two, dates in the future. DCI Donald May heads the investigation. Born in Holme Hill his family worshipped at Salem. The murders seem inexplicable: two blameless old men; seemingly the same murderer. A darker past emerges as May, DS Viv Trubshaw and DC Charlie Riggs investigate. Then a third murder, as forecast. May has seven days to the fourth. He discovers much more than just the murderer: all in one month; a month of murder.

Book excerpt: When Lou Brandon retires as the only constable of a small Manitoba town, his life takes on a comfortable but aimless routine. That changes when he slowly becomes friends with the new Catholic priest, Peter Wilson. As the two struggle with life, unlikely circumstances bring them together to investigate a murder long thought solved. Their friendship gives them the space to question the burdens they carry and how these have limited their lives. But examining life, particularly when it has not been lived honestly, is much easier said than done. Learning to face their truths gives them the opportunity to grow, but comes with risks of failure they may be unwilling to face. As Brandon and Wilson draw closer to identifying the real murderer, the uncomfortable relationship between the local Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities threatens to derail their investigation completely. Will they be able to find justice for the victim and reconciliation to themselves before it’s too late?
