Tax cheats, beware: The Treasury Department's Criminal Investigations Division has a new special agent on its payroll. A recovering tomboy with a head for numbers, Tara's fast becoming the Annie Oakley of the IRS—kicking ass, taking social security numbers, and keeping the world safe for honest taxpayers. Or else. Tara's latest mission finds her in hot pursuit of ice-cream vendor Joseph "Joe Cool" Cullen. Along with frozen treats he's selling narcotics—and failing to report his ill-gotten gains on his tax returns. Over Tara's dead body. Then there's Michael Gryder, who appears to be operating a Ponzi scheme...with banker Stan Shelton...whose lake house is being landscaped by Brett Ellington...who happens to be dating Tara. If following that money trail isn't tough enough, now Tara must face a new conundrum: Should she invest her trust in Brett—or put him behind bars? New love always comes at a cost but justice? Priceless.

Book excerpt: Many people get killed on their taxes each year, but that doesn’t have to be your story. The average person doesn’t need a degree in business or accounting to avoid paying too much in taxes—they simply need to discover their misconceptions about taxes and create a plan to reduce those taxes over time. In Don’t Get Killed by Taxes, P. J. DiNuzzo and Steven Jarvis bust the most common myths that keep people paying too much in taxes. They share five simple building blocks that can save money and reveal twenty of the most common tax strategies to substantially reduce an individual’s tax burden. Taxpayers have been conditioned to believe myths about taxes that are simply not true, such as: “Taxes are a fact. I have no control over how much I pay.” “As long as I get a refund, I’ve won.” “I use tax preparation software. I’m all set.” “I have a tax preparer. I’m all set.” Don’t Get Killed by Taxes offers the building blocks for anyone to reduce their taxes. Motivated readers who apply DiNuzzo and Jarvis’ strategies will: Reduce their tax rate Optimize tax deferred and tax free investments Create a “paycheck” —one that will last the rest of their lives Capture every benefit they’re entitled to Pay substantially less in taxes.

Book excerpt: A CPA in 1940s San Francisco searches for his partner’s killer in this witty and “hard-hitting” mystery by the author of the classic To Catch a Thief (Time). The first in the series of noir mysteries starring hard-drinking accountant Whit Whitney, Death and Taxes follows the calculating amateur detective as he looks into the murder of George MacLeod—a top tax consultant who was a close colleague of Whitney’s, at least until his body was stuffed into a bank vault. A fast-paced, sharp-witted tale involving everything from pretty blondes to bootleggers to tangles with the Treasury Department, Death and Taxes “winds up at a lightning pace . . . Fast and easy to read” (New York Herald Tribune). “Rapid-fire action in the manner of Dashiell Hammett.” —The Detroit News

About the authors: Michael A. York, EA (Michael A. York & Associates, Salt Lake City, UT) literally grew up in a CPA firm - his dad didn't teach him how to fix anything, he taught Michael how to deduct it, and Michael has spent decades focusing on nothing but taxes. Andrew L. Stevens, EA, MBA (Houston Tax Advisors, Houston, TX) began working in that same tax firm in 1999, and has since gone to business school, worked in management consulting, started a business and sold it, all while remaining grounded to his roots in taxes. When Michael and Andrew sat down to compare notes, they started with the question, "What is the best thing we have found to educate clients about tax strategy?" Their answers were identical: relatable stories! No one likes code sections and very few understand tax language, but everyone can relate to (and remember!) real stories about real people. So they wrote a book full of real stories about how real people save real money on their taxes, and the best part is that you can use these strategies, too! Book excerpt: A groundbreaking exposé of racism in the American taxation system from a law professor and expert on tax policy NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND FORTUNE • “Important reading for those who want to understand how inequality is built into the bedrock of American society, and what a more equitable future might look like.”—Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist Dorothy A. Brown became a tax lawyer to get away from race. As a young black girl growing up in the South Bronx, she’d seen how racism limited the lives of her family and neighbors. Her law school classes offered a refreshing contrast: Tax law was about numbers, and the only color that mattered was green. But when Brown sat down to prepare tax returns for her parents, she found something strange: James and Dottie Brown, a plumber and a nurse, seemed to be paying an unusually high percentage of their income in taxes. When Brown became a law professor, she set out to understand why. In The Whiteness of Wealth, Brown draws on decades of cross-disciplinary research to show that tax law isn’t as color-blind as she’d once believed. She takes us into her adopted city of Atlanta, introducing us to families across the economic spectrum whose stories demonstrate how American tax law rewards the preferences and practices of white people while pushing black people further behind. From attending college to getting married to buying a home, black Americans find themselves at a financial disadvantage compared to their white peers. The results are an ever-increasing wealth gap and more black families shut out of the American dream. Solving the problem will require a wholesale rethinking of America’s tax code. But it will also require both black and white Americans to make different choices. This urgent, actionable book points the way forward.

Book excerpt: If what you thought to be true turned out not to be, when would you want to know? Obviously right away! This book is a compilation of eight commonly held financial "truths" that are generally accepted as hallmarks of a sound financial plan. What if they aren't true? What impact would relying on something that isn't true have on your financial future? For example, we have all accepted the concept of the miracle of compound interest. If the exponential growth potential were the only factor in play - anyone nearing retirement would be wealthy. But there are other factors in play that are often not accounted for, consequently, none of us are as wealthy as we thought we would be when we were first taught the miracle. Inside, find out the truth behind average rates of return, long term investing, qualified plans, buying term insurance and investing the rest, seeing your home as an investment, financing large purchases, and asset accumulation in addition to the miracle of compound interest.

This book was released on 2021-02-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you wonder just how much extra income tax you're paying, because the rich don't pay their share? You might be surprised. In the revised and expanded second edition of the well sourced and documented "The Rich Don't Pay Tax ...Or Do They?" John Gaver undertakes a critical look at the latest official IRS collections data to determine which income groups really do or don't pay income tax and what portion of the US personal income tax load is paid by each income group. Then, with that information, he goes on to analyze that IRS tax data, in a way designed to allow you to quantify, based on your own standards, just how fair or unfair that outcome may be to the various income groups. Continuing in a step-by-step manner, John uses those findings to show how the silent threat of an unintended consequence of our tax code is quietly, but seriously undermining our economy, to the detriment of everyone - rich or poor. Of course, why present a problem without a solution? So, Gaver shows how a thoroughly vetted plan that has already been presented as a solution to other problems, would also solve the problems brought to light in this book, if undertaken soon. Although this book exposes a critical threat to our economy, it's really about implementing a fair and equitable solution that would reverse this threat. "The Rich Don't Pay Tax! ...Or Do They?" contains dozens of URLs to sources of hard data and reliable research. John then lays out, in an easy to follow manner, the important relationships that exist in that data. He clearly explains the calculation methods that are used, to help bring the discussed IRS data into focus. Nothing is left to chance. When John cites a statistic, he explains clearly why it's important. It's basic economics, but without the academic jargon and double-speak, that economists often use, to sound impressive and to keep the uninformed masses intimidated and confused, so they won't ask questions. In fact, one reviewer of the original version of this book said, "should be required reading in all Economics classes." Another suggested that in an hour, you would learn more economics than in a semester of economics. Another went as far as to say, "This book took me just under an hour to read, and has completely changed my view on taxes." Most reviewers seem to agree with the reviewer who said, "The author didn't use elaborate high brow language ... Points are clear and substantiated well." In short, it's tax economics for the rest of us. While the silent nature of the very serious issues exposed in this book does tend to keep them out of the public eye, the real threat is in who is aware of these issues and what those people are doing about it. This book is about what YOU can do about it. Don't delay. Order your copy now.

Book excerpt: Many years ago I heard the old cliché, "The only thing we can be assured of in this life are death and taxes". With this bit of wisdom, I decided to become a tax consultant. If for no other reason, it appeared to offer steady employment. I have been doing taxes for over 40 years and it seems when April 15th of each year passes, I know less about tax returns today than when I first started. Not only have the tax laws changed, but also those silly tax returns get more and more complicated. This book is inspired by the many experiences of my clients, friends and relatives. Throughout the book, we will be telling little stories about some "screw up" experienced by poor taxpayers over the years. I am not going to bore you with a bunch of tax laws, as I'm sure you wouldn't understand them, (I sure don't), and I don't want this book to be prescribed as good sleeping material. Taxes are a very important part of our everyday life and to have good financial planning, some understanding of taxes is imperative.
