Like angels, vampires have been protecting humans from demons while keeping to the shadows, lurking in the darkness. In return, they’ve asked for nothing. Until now. After the heinous slaughter of his father, the Alpha Vampire, Kaj Courtenay finds himself taking on the role of the most powerful vampire in existence. He’s up against traitors out to topple him, demons bent on eliminating the vampire race entirely, and an archangel who has other plans for them. It’s all Kaj can do to maintain his focus, but he knows it would be easier with the female who owns him, heart, body, and soul at his side. Problem is convincing her. Acadia only knows a life of subservience. She has spent fifteen hundred years bound to the Angels of Darkness, her race used as their life source to maintain their existence on Earth. Living out eternity at their mercy is her destiny, beyond her control. It has never been something she questioned. Not until Kaj appeared in her life and gave her something to live for, made her question her very existence. Acadia knows resisting the powerful vampire is futile. He holds her heart. Problem is, it isn’t hers to give. Kaj and Acadia must break the chains that have bound them to their pasts so they can embrace the future and conquer the enormous obstacles and ridiculous odds standing in their way. And for the sake of all, they must do it together.

She’s doing a pretty good job of it, too, until her son gets a new therapist. While Mr. Miller is full of unrealistic—and possibly dangerous—ideas, he’s also incredibly attractive. Driven by guilt, she’ll never let anything bad happen to Sidney again. Unfortunately, the more she’s forced to deal with Mr. Miller, the more she remembers she’s more than just someone’s mom. It’s hard to focus on getting the man fired when she’s set aflame whenever he’s around. Zachary Miller didn’t expect his forced retirement from the military to be easy but dealing with Sidney’s mom was more than he’d bargained for. He’d faced down the enemy in combat and survived, but this woman could oppose anyone and win with her cool, no-nonsense gaze. She’s a force to be reckoned with even while she makes him want to forget the scars that define him. He’d bet good money that under her ice queen façade burns a fire ready to illuminate the dark future that terrifies him and keep his demons at bay. Maybe Sarah Grant and her son are exactly what he needs to pull himself into the light. Can Sarah and Zach leave their broken pasts behind and find healing in each other?

Book excerpt: Olga Heinz has two loves-creating recipes and nursing. For thirty years, she clocked countless miles walking on every floor of the University Hospital. She mentored generations of newly graduated nurses and fed hungry staffers with her baked goodies. As she struggles with budget cuts and ever-changing hospital policies, Olga is motivated by a desire to help her patients, no matter what it takes. She encourages her student nurses to strike a balance between offering simple human comfort and applying the latest and greatest breakthroughs in medical science. Then one average day, through a series of accidents, Olga discovers a medical breakthrough-a shocking miracle cure that is deceptively simple, biologically complex ... and morally ambiguous. But she tempers her excitement with clinical, professional reserve. Despite her excitement, she knows that she can't share her findings with her peers, or the love of her life, Dr. Martin Hood, until she can verify her results. Olga reaches out and finds a reluctant partner in Steven Whitters, a young orderly at the hospital. Together, they begin to test the healing powder on the unsuspecting patrons of a local homeless shelter-where forgotten and lonely souls seek the simplest of necessities and some small measure of human comfort. But Olga and Steven are so absorbed in proving their potential miracle, neither realizes the terrible cost the cure will exact. Is it a miracle-or a curse?

Book excerpt: How a grassroots abolitionist project of cultural healing counters the carceral state in a Chicanx community in California For many, gang involvement can be a guaranteed life sentence, a force which traps them in an inescapable cycle of violence even if it does not lead to actual prison time. Healing Movements explores the work of formerly gang-involved Chicanx men and women in California who draw on the social connections made during their gang-involved years to forge new pathways for cultural healing and countering the carceral system. Known colloquially as the “movement of healing,” this Chicanx-Indigenous abolitionist project based in Salinas, California, was spurred on by a series of four police homicides of Latino men in 2014. Organizing around such issues as police brutality and mass incarceration, these collectives—two of which are discussed in this book, one mixed-gender, and the other women-only—turned to their often obscured Mesoamerican ancestry to find new resources for building a different future for themselves and subsequent generations. Drawing on extensive fieldwork conducted in Salinas, Healing Movements reveals how these communities have taken shape in large part through a conscious effort to uplift Chicanx-Indigenous culture and ceremonial practices. By tapping into their Indigeneity, the members of these collectives access a wealth of new resources to shape their future, opening up novel ways to organize and build strong relational ties that are noteworthy to anyone invested in abolitionist work.

Book excerpt: In Healing, author Sherrie M. Steiner promotes social change to grapple with the global environmental problems that threaten our collective future. The book combines scientific and faith-based motives to compel the reader to participate in social renewal. In Healing, Steiner mixes hard-hitting realism with hopeful possibility in her assessment of the vulnerabilities of modern civilization. Steiner addresses numerous socio-political issues, including economic growth, energy policy, and sustainability. Ultimately, however, she says that it is the choices we make about who we become in the days ahead that will determine our healing. Technically, this book is about environmental sustainability, but the subtext is altogether quite different. This is a book about a future filled with hope.

However, when her sister-in-law's brother appears suddenly from the future, broken and barely breathing, she rushes to help him. One touch makes her heart beat, blooding her and determining her fate—she needs to claim him at least once or she'll slowly go mad and lose her mind. Although how she's going to suffer being intimate without her dark memories crashing down and paralyzing her, she doesn't know. Dr. River Vale wakes up in pain, his new surroundings unfamiliar, and his body weak from his months' long captivity. It's definitely not the same place where he'd been kept prisoner and tortured by a ruthless vampire mob-boss's minions. But when a female vampire shows up with the same last name as the bastard who ordered his kidnapping, he lashes out. The look of fear and uncertainty in her eyes makes him pause and wonder if she's actually afraid of him or merely putting on an act. As River adjusts to the fact his sister brought him to 1890 London via her newfound magic, he learns more about the vampire named Nora. Her damaged soul calls to him as a healer, and when he finds out he's her fated lord, he wonders if maybe he should give them a chance. But will both of their pasts be too much to overcome to find happiness? Or will being together make them stronger than they ever thought possible, enough to shine light on the darkness of their pasts and create a happy ending after all?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing for the Soul, a moving and inspiring collection of contemporary poems composed by Dr. Jerron C. Hill, gracefully and thoughtfully addresses modern-day challenges common to believers and non-believers alike. Following a supernatural encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ in 1984 at the age of 23, Dr. Hill subsequently became a devoted follower. In 2009, he experienced a vision of himself writing poetry shortly before awakening from sleep, and proceeded to write eleven poems that very same weekend, as well as numerous other compositions for two years thereafter. The author was not, however, released by God at that time to publish these poems. In August of 2020, the Holy Spirit inspired Dr. Hill to once again begin writing poetry, and he found himself composing these works with a passion and fiery dedication that strongly mimicked the way an evangelist would fervently deliver a Sunday morning sermon. The poems demand attention, compelling the reader to engage in personal introspection and reflection, and enjoining each person to place hope in the prospect of not only a meaningful life lived today, but for the promise of lasting goodness and eternity as well. Each composition culminates in a heartfelt plea to trust in Jesus and repent from sin. The author makes it clear, both through his own journey and the wisdom of Scripture, that Jesus changes lives, heals the brokenhearted and resuscitates broken relationships. Many people today feel lost, confused and even hopeless. By immersing oneself in the beauty and power of Dr. Hill’s enlivening words, one will come to the unequivocal awareness that Christ is the answer and way to approach and surmount life’s difficulties. Eternity is forever and God is inviting everyone to be born again by accepting his son’s sacrifice on the cross. Healing for the Soul will inevitably leave the reader pondering the most pressing question of all time: Where will you spend eternity? With the help of this uplifting compilation, the answer to that question will reveal itself to all who choose to hear their message.
