Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excerpt from Dirty Feet and Hungry Hearts- Why? This was the question my sister and I asked each other, over and over. Every time we started talking about our mother, it was always this unanswered question we were left with. Why was she so unhappy? Why was she so abusive to Daddy, who loved her with his whole heart and soul? Why wouldn't she take care of herself? When I decided to try and find the answer, it was very hard to face those long buried memories from my childhood. But I did come to understand why. Author Jeanette Gardner uses her deeply personal memoir to share the touching story of her mother Pearl's journey, from growing up the daughter of a wealthy family in Illinois to living in a shack in Wyoming. A sweeping memoir chronicling the origins of the author's family and their subsequent struggle with poverty. After getting to know much-older Bowman Mercer through a pen-pal service, Pearl, the author's mother, eventually leaves her abusive brother and their inherited house to move to Wyoming as Bowman's wife. She weathers their paltry circumstances and survives Jeanette's grueling birth and a near-poisoning by a jealous woman. As a little girl, the author lived in homes with dirt floors and rarely bathed, which often made her and her family-her parents and sister, Virginia-an object of ridicule. Nonetheless, she lived a largely happy childhood, developing a resilient, stubborn nature, and benefiting from her indulgent but well-meaning parents and helpful townspeople. With poignant empathy, the author successfully traces Pearl's transformation from a pleasant, shy beauty to an unkempt grouch prone to hysterics. She also understands how to build suspense, but inexplicably sabotages her own groundwork by giving away key plot elements in the chapter titles. For instance, a new neighbor's spooky friendliness-skillfully brought to life on the page-is prematurely explained by the chapter's title, "Graduation, A Child Molester." -Kirkus Discoveries

His story brings to light what living day and night under the threat of death looks like for a Black kid in this era. Should he look at the white girl, or dream of her and tell someone or be caught doing so? His mother forced him to help her raise her remaining 12 children and demanded that he kill his prized pig to feed her family. McAindriu’s childhood was rife with small moments of joy and learning, coupled with working in cottonfields, pain both physical and emotional, and being the Man of the House.

Book excerpt: THE CHARACTERS IN SCOTT NADELSON’S third collection are living in the wake of momentous events-- the rupture of relationships, the loss of loved ones, the dissolution of dreams, and yet they find new ways of forging on with their lives, making accommodations that are sometimes delusional, sometimes destructive, sometimes even healthy. In “Oslo,” a thirteen-year-old boy on a trip to Israel with his grandparents grapples with his father’s abandonment and his own rocky coming-of-age. In “The Old Uniform,” a young man left by his fiancée revisits the haunts of his single days, and on a drunken march through nighttime Brooklyn, begins to shed the false selves that have kept him from fully living. And in the title story, a couple testing out the waters of trial separation quickly discover how deeply the fault lines of their marriage run and how desperately they want to hang onto what remains. Mining Nadelson’s familiar territory of Jewish suburban New Jersey, these fearless, funny, and quietly moving stories explore the treacherous crossroads where disappointments meet unfulfilled desire.

Book excerpt: Author Anne Cumings recalls growing up in a culture that scrutinized her body as a source of weakness and sin. Her church warned of "slippery slides into debauchery," and modern culture taught her that she must look a certain way to be attractive, acceptable, even lovable—something to which most women will relate. Now, equipped with a body-positive mindset, she has created an engaging and uplifting study, My Body Is Good, to guide readers through a Lenten season of celebrating their bodies. Written specifically for women, each daily meditation offers a scripture passage, a reflection, and a prayer. Readers are encouraged to capture their questions, ideas, and thoughts through journaling and other spiritual practices, all with the intention of healing from diet culture. Join her on this Lenten journey and never again forget that your God-given body, made from dust, is good.

Embark on an epic fantasy adventure of galactic proportions! Escaping the nuclear destruction they had caused on the mother planet Rozari, the Mishnese and Karupatani both chose to resettle on the same planet and continue their fighting. Thus the planet Rehnor has been plagued by wars for more than 1,000 years. The wars will come to an end when the Karupta Crown Prince is wed to the Mishnese Princess Royal, removing both from the throne, and creating instead an heir to both kingdoms and the entire planet. Unfortunately, the princess dies in childbirth and the infant prince is secreted away by the Mishnese, hidden from his father' s family in decrepit inner city orphanage. But, the boy is not a normal child for he has telekinetic and telepathic powers, strange silver eyes and an astonishing, other-worldly beauty. He is, in fact, the MaKennah, the savior whose birth was foretold in the writings of his ancestors more than ten centuries ago. This three volume set follows Senya, from the streets of Old Mishnah, to the forests of Karupatani, and eventually to the Mother Planet Rozari where he attempts to live a somewhat normal life surrounded by amazingly ordinary people until Rehnor and his kingdom call him home.
