Book excerpt: IF ANIMALS COULD SPEAK is a fantasy that examines the human condition and our relationship to the animal kingdom. Inspired by 9/11/2001, the central themes of the novel are betrayal, terror, loss, heroism and love. Unlike that infamous September day, however, the primary victims and heroes of LoCicero's work are not human, but a band of farm animals. Faced with the destruction of their farm after its sale to developers, they valiantly but vainly battle the construction workers and their cruel, scar-faced boss. Exiled and pursued, their numbers grow as they recruit a dog, a bear, a colony of bats, a band of raccoons, an eagle, and ultimately a human who was an eyewitness to the terrorist attack on New York's Twin Towers. The latter, a stage actor nicknamed Shake, is also a fugitive, suspected by overzealous government agents of being a terrorist. Horse ultimately takes the unprecedented action of revealing the animals' most guarded secret to Shake. The latter repays their trust after making a remarkable discovery in the far recesses of a mountain cave, a find that has the potential of securing them lasting peace and freedom. In order to do this, however, they must locate Farmer and enlist him to their cause.

Those already familiar with donkeys will also find invaluable information about addressing behavioural issues using patience, kindness and bodywork using the Tellington TTouch techniques - a non-invasive system of touch and massage designed to bring about calmness, trust and confidence. Case studies show how these techniques can be used to address a variety of problems. Topics covered include: the history of the donkey; anatomy, physiology and conformation; connecting with nervous and novice donkeys; introducing bodywork; Tellington TTouch and Connected Riding. There are an estimated forty to fifty million donkeys in the world, mostly used as working animals, and its popularity is down to its stamina, and the fact that it utilizes its feed more efficiently and tolerates thirst better than its cousin the horse. Illustrated with 82 colour photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time when children used to go to their grandpa and grandma often. In a playful way, they would learn and absorb the beautiful values of life. But today, when everyone is becoming busier, at such a time, it is only the stories which can bring us closer to the future generation. Those moments at night before sleeping, when we and our little ones enjoy the stories together, are invaluable. In these moments, unknowingly, the love between us becomes stronger, and the children learn the first lesson of their lives—the value of beautiful relationships. The attempt has been to see each story through the eyes of a child, and to listen to each story with the ears of a child, and understand it with a child's heart. The effort has been that if there is any word which pricks their innocent minds, then that should not reach them through the medium of these stories. The effort here has been that each story has a positive end, from which the dreams of the children get a positive beginning.

The medieval planet of Maltroit seems to be repeating Earth's bloody history in the worst possible manner: endless feudal warfare, at the expense of peasants just trying to survive. It's up to the Rogue Wizard to give the downtrodden a crash course in revolution, and set in motion a plan for the common soldiers to take back power and end the bloodshed. Disguising himself as a mercenary soldier, teaching nobles the rudiments of democracy and schooling peasants in the basics of radical politics, before you can say "Magna Carta," the Rogue Wizard has bent the course of history and set the planet on a course toward peace and democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literary ode to peace, presence, and fulfillment inspired by a walk taken with a most surprising creature. "The demon of speed is often associated with forgetting, with avoidance . . . and slowness with memory and confronting," observes Milan Kundera in his novel Slowness. With that purpose in mind-a search for slowness and tranquility, Andy Merrifield sets out on a journey of the soul with a friend's donkey, Gribouille, to walk amid the ruins and spectacular vistas of southern France's Haute-Auvergne. As Merrifield contemplates literature, science, truth, and beauty amid the French countryside, Gribouille surprises him with his subtle wisdom, reminding him time and again that enlightenment is all around us if we but seek it.

Book excerpt: Over time the complex idea of "species" has evolved, yet its meaning is far from resolved. This comprehensive work is a fresh look at an idea central to the field of biology by tracing its history from antiquity to today. Species is a benchmark exploration and clarification of a concept fundamental to the past, present, and future of the natural sciences. In this edition, a section is added on the debate over species since the time of the New Synthesis, and brings the book up to date. A section on recent philosophical debates over species has also been added. This edition is better suited non-specialists in philosophy, so that it will be of greater use for scientists wishing to understand how the notion came to be that living organisms form species. Key Selling Features: Covers the philosophical and historical development of the concept of "species" Documents that variation was recognized by pre-Darwinian scholars Includes a section on the debates since the time of the New Synthesis Better suited to non-philosophers
