Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This casebook gathers a collection of ambitious essays about both parts of the novel (1605 and 1615) and also provides a general introduction and a bibliography. The essays range from Ram?n Men?ndez Pidal's seminal study of how Cervantes dealt with chivalric literature to Erich Auerbachs polemical study of Don Quixote as essentially a comic book by studying its mixture of styles, and include Leo Spitzer's masterful probe into the essential ambiguity of the novel through minute linguistic analysis of Cervantes' prose. The book includes pieces by other major Cervantes scholars, such as Manuel Dur?n and Edward C. Riley, as well as younger scholars like Georgina Dopico Black. All these essays ultimately seek to discover that which is peculiarly Cervantean in Don Quixote and why it is considered to be the first modern novel.

In Fighting Windmills Manuel Durán and Fay R. Rogg offer a beautifully written excursion into Cervantes’ great novel and trace its impact on writers and thinkers across centuries and continents. How did Cervantes write such a rich tale? Durán and Rogg explore the details of Cervantes’ life, the techniques with which he constructed the novel, and the central themes of the adventures of Don Quixote and his earthy squire Sancho Panza. The authors then provide an insightful, panoramic view of Cervantes’ powerful influence on generations of writers as diverse as Descartes, Voltaire, Dickens, Dostoyevsky, Twain, and Borges.

Book Synopsis Cervantes and Modernity by : Eric Clifford Graf
Download or read book Cervantes and Modernity written by Eric Clifford Graf and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graf argues that the doubts expressed by both historicists and postmodernists regarding the progressive nature of Don Quijote are exaggerated. Neither do interpretations that abstain from this debate by emphasizing authorial ambivalence or positioning the novel at a crossroads seem as responsible as they once did. Beyond these skeptical and neutral alternatives, there are key steps forward in Cervantes's worldview. These four essays detail Don Quijote's anticipations of many of the same ideas and values that drive today's multiculturalism, feminism, secularism, and materialism. An important thesis here is that the Enlightenment remains the best vantage point from which to appreciate the novel's relation to the discourses of such movements. Thus Voltaire's Candide (1759), Feijoo's Defensa de las mujeres (1726), and Hobbes' Leviathan (1651) are each shown to be logical extensions of some of Cervante's most fundamental propositions. Finally, this book will still be of interest to specialists immune to the ideological anxieties arising from debates over notions of modernity. Graf also explores the interrelated meaning of a number of Don Quijote's symbols, characters, and episodes, pinpoints several of the novel's most important classical and medieval sources, and unveils for us its first serious English reader.
Book Synopsis International Don Quixote by : Theo d'. Haen
Download or read book International Don Quixote written by Theo d'. Haen and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its appearance, Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote has exerted a powerful influence on the artistic imagination all around the world. This cross-cultural volume offers important new readings of canonical reinterpretations of the Quixote: from Unamuno to Borges, from Ortega y Gasset to Calvino, from Mark Twain to Carlos Fuentes. But to the prestigious list of well-known authors who acknowledged Cervantes' influence, it also adds new and surprising names, such as that of Subcomandante Marcos, who gives a Cervantine twist to his Mexican Zapatista revolution. Attention is paid to successful contemporary authors such as Paul Auster and Ricardo Piglia, as well as to the forgotten voice of the Belgian writer Joseph Grandgagnage. The volume breaks new ground by taking into consideration Belgian music and Dutch translations, as well as Cervantine procedures in Terry Gilliam's Lost in La Mancha. In all, this book constitutes an indispensable guide for the further study of the Quixote's Nachleben and offers exciting proposals for rereading Cervantes.

Book Synopsis Prince to Frog and ... Vice Versa! Applied Psychological Techniques to Change Yourself - Or Others. by : Angelos Rodafinos
Download or read book Prince to Frog and ... Vice Versa! Applied Psychological Techniques to Change Yourself - Or Others. written by Angelos Rodafinos and published by Dr Ro. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all born beautiful babies, adored by parents and friends, with potential to become real princes or princesses. However, at some stage, around 30 - for some later, for others even earlier- most of us, instead of "would-be princes," we become "frogs," as a result of the bad habits (poor nutrition, maladaptive thinking, bad companies, etc.) that we adopt along the way... and so on. How can one revert to being a prince once again? One solution is to wait for the kiss of the princess. The other is to read this book. It will serve as a manual for individuals who want to change something in their lives or in the lives of people around them. Most people would like to change one or more things in their lives. In fact, when examining their lives, very few individuals have difficulty finding an area they would like to improve. Based on the theories of learning and cognitive-behavioural psychology, Dr Ro describes goal setting and behaviour modification techniques that have been applied effectively in educational settings, fitness centers, business organizations, hospitals, mental health institutions, and prisons. If you are not happy with yourself or with the conditions in your life, do not lose hope, because you can change - as long as you follow certain steps. Yet, if you do not change your direction, you're going to end up where you're heading (saying ... made in China).
Book Synopsis Professor Borges: A Course on English Literature by : Jorge Luis Borges
Download or read book Professor Borges: A Course on English Literature written by Jorge Luis Borges and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In English at last, Borges’s erudite and entertaining lectures on English literature from Beowulf to Oscar Wilde Writing for Harper’s Magazine, Edgardo Krebs describes Professor Borges:“A compilation of the twenty-five lectures Borges gave in 1966 at the University of Buenos Aires, where he taught English literature. Starting with the Vikings’ kennings and Beowulf and ending with Stevenson and Oscar Wilde, the book traverses a landscape of ‘precursors,’cross-cultural borrowings, and genres of expression, all connected by Borges into a vast interpretive web. This is the most surprising and useful of Borges’s works to have appeared posthumously.” Borges takes us on a startling, idiosyncratic, fresh, and highly opinionated tour of English literature, weaving together countless cultural traditions of the last three thousand years. Borges’s lectures — delivered extempore by a man of extraordinary erudition — bring the canon to remarkably vivid life. Now translated into English for the first time, these lectures are accompanied by extensive and informative notes by the Borges scholars Martín Arias and Martín Hadis.
