Book Synopsis Research-Creation in Music and the Arts by : Sophie Stévance
Download or read book Research-Creation in Music and the Arts written by Sophie Stévance and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s, the landscape of higher education and research has been considerably altered by the integration of the arts within the university environment. Even though a form of research is inherent to artistic creation, the creative process is not comparable to the established procedures involved in academic research. As such, how can the imperatives of intellectual (and sometimes restrictive) rigour characteristic of scholarly endeavours be reconciled with the more explorative and intuitive approach of artistic creation? The concept of 'research-creation' allows artists and scholars to collaborate on a common project, acknowledging each participant’s expertise in the production of an artistic work that either generates theoretical reflections or has emerged from academic research. This fully revised and updated translation of Sophie Stévance and Serge Lacasse’s original French book offers an overview of the historical, political, social, cultural and academic contexts within which research-creation has emerged in Quebec and Canada, before similar (yet often divergent) conceptions appeared elsewhere in the world. Focussing primarily on the case of music, the book goes on to explore the pedagogical potential of research-creation within a university-based environment and proposes a clear and encompassing definition, as well as a theoretical model, of research-creation supported by concrete examples. By underscoring the reciprocal nature of this approach and the potential benefits of collaborative relationships, the authors’ vision of research-creation extends far beyond the field of music and art alone: rather, it has the potential to integrate all approaches and disciplines that seek to combine practice and research.

Book Synopsis Immobility and Medicine by : Cecilia Vindrola-Padros
Download or read book Immobility and Medicine written by Cecilia Vindrola-Padros and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work in the mobilities literature has highlighted the importance of thinking about mobility and immobility as a continuum, where movement intersects with processes that might entail episodes of transition, waiting, emptiness, and fixity. This focus on stillness, things that are stuck, incomplete or in a state of transition can point to new theoretical, methodological and practical dimensions in social studies of medicine. This edited volume brings the concept of immobility to the forefront of social studies of medicine to explore how immobility shapes processes of medical care and the theoretical and methodological challenges of studying immobility in medical contexts. The authors in this volume draw from a wide range of case studies across the globe to make contributions to our current understanding of health, illness and medicine, mobilities and immobilities. Chapter 2 “Lists in Flux, Lives on Hold? Technologies of Waiting in Liver Transplant Medicine” is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Book Synopsis Modern Management of Acoustic Neuroma by : Jean Régis
Download or read book Modern Management of Acoustic Neuroma written by Jean Régis and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic neuroma outcomes have been greatly improved by advances in microsurgical techniques, and recently by the long-term application of radiosurgery, which has proven to be an appropriate, verifiable, and extremely clinically relevant treatment strategy. This volume brings together the latest opinions of outstanding physicians and surgeons who treat patients with acoustic neuromas, commonly known as vestibular neuromas. Since the days of Cushing, when partial tumor removal seemed the best method for saving a patient's life, the management of this relatively rare tumor has sparked enormous clinical interest. The book outlines the various stages in the evolution of vestibular schwannoma surgery and presents the full spectrum of current therapeutic possibilities. The novel concept of combining microsurgical with radiosurgical skills should eliminate problems such as facial palsy and hearing loss which were previously associated with the therapeutic management of these tumors. The excellent research findings published here by leading experts in the field will help neurosurgeons, otologists and radiation oncologists to understand the enormous strides made during the last two decades in vestibular schwannoma surgery and radiosurgery.
