This book was released on 2000-07-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original CliffsNotes study guides offer expert commentary on major themes, plots, characters, literary devices, and historical background. The latest generation of titles in this series also feature glossaries and visual elements that complement the classic, familiar format. In CliffsNotes on The Heart of Darkness & The Secret Sharer, you come to understand how each of these stories deals with the "dark side" of the human character. Heart of Darkness is a journey up the Congo River to where an ivory agent, Kurtz, has succumbed to human weakness and evil, and has disintegrated into a grotesque creature. The Secret Sharer is an allegorical examination of a timid man who struggles to stifle the more physical and dangerous part of himself. Eventually, he resolves this duality and becomes more daring—and, therefore, more complete. This concise supplement to Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness & The Secret Sharer helps you understand the overall structure of the novels, actions and motivations of the characters, and the social and cultural perspectives of the author. Features that help you study include Part-by-part summaries and commentaries Character maps that graphically illustrates the relationships among the characters Critical essays that provide expert insight on the novels' structure Review sections that test your knowledge Classic literature or modern-day treasure—you'll understand it all with expert information and insight from CliffsNotes study guides.

Book Synopsis Conrad’s Narrative Voice by : Werner Senn
Download or read book Conrad’s Narrative Voice written by Werner Senn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werner Senn’s Conrad’s Narrative Voice draws on the methodology of linguistic stylistics and the analysis of narrative discourse to discuss Joseph Conrad’s perception of the role and the limitations of language. Tracing recurrent linguistic patterns allows Senn to demonstrate that Conrad’s view of the radical indeterminacy of the world is conveyed on the most basic levels of the author’s (often criticised) verbal style but permeates his work at all levels of the narrative. Detailed stylistic analysis also reveals the importance, to Conrad, of the spoken word, of oral communication. Senn argues that the narrators’ compulsive efforts to make their readers see and understand reflect Conrad’s ethics of human solidarity in a world he depicts as hostile, enigmatic and often senseless.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Joseph Conrad’s Concepts of Community by : Kaoru Yamamoto
Download or read book Rethinking Joseph Conrad’s Concepts of Community written by Kaoru Yamamoto and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Joseph Conrad's Concepts of Community uses Conrad's phrase 'strange fraternity' from The Rover as a starting point for an exploration of the concept of community in his writing, including his neglected vignettes and later stories. Drawing on the work of continental thinkers including Jacques Derrida, Jean Luc-Nancy and Hannah Arendt, Yamamoto offers original readings of Heart of Darkness, The Nigger of the 'Narcissus', The Rover and Suspense and the short stories “The Secret Sharer”, “The Warrior's Soul” and “The Duel”. Working at the intersection between literature and philosophy, this is a unique and interdisciplinary engagement with Conrad's work.
