Book excerpt: Given the fact that two-thirds of all intrastate wars since 1945 have included foreign interventions, what drives sovereign states to support non-state conflict parties? In order to understand causes and calculations of this particular type of third party intervention, this book connects some of the most important contemporary debates in international relations, ranging from security cooperation between states and non-state actors to the effects of intervention on both local conflict dynamics and interstate relations. Presenting a new theoretical framework and a multidimensional concept of support (endorsement, hosting, as well as financial and military assistance), this book establishes a systematic path between international as well as domestic incentives and specific types of sponsorship policies. In a subsequent comparative analysis, the author examines conditions and dynamics of Syria’s cooperation with Fatah, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, and Hizballah from 1964 to 2006.

Book excerpt: Since reluctantly accepting the fact that she's not getting any younger, Rose Mula has been trying to put a positive spin on aging. When a radio interviewer diplomatically described her as "seasoned" instead of old, she retorted, "You mean hot and spicy, right?" Her eclectic career included stints as an executive assistant to the president of a major corporation, a public relations specialist for a prominent hotel company, and a manager of a chain of six New England theaters. Since retiring, she has had more time to indulge in her favorite hobby-writing humorously about every-day irritations that plague us all--especially aging (see "positive spin" above). Her wry observations have appeared on You Tube and in over a hundred publications, including The Christian Science Monitor, The Reader's Digest, The Philadelphia Inquirier, and frequently in The Saturday Evening Post. She also writes a monthly column for Seniorwomen.com. Her previous books-If These Are Laugh Lines I'm Having Way Too Much Fun, The Beautiful People & Other Aggravatons, and Grandmother Goose -Rhymes for a Second Childhood-are available on Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: About the Book Die-Aly$is is the final novel in the mystery series that has come to be known as the “Webb Espy Chronicles.” This thought-provoking third story in the trilogy is more than just a traditional mystery and begins with a Florida Southern District Federal judge, an eccentric individual, and an eclectic jurist, who is well in front of the jurisprudence curve as compared to his legal peers. The sage old legal scholar, in the twilight of his career, has long ago reconciled his moral and ethical thinking related to the hypocritical limitations and archaic institutional precedents existing in the legal arena that restrict common sense. A whistleblower case assigned to his court docket provides the impetus for inserting his conniving influence into the mix to alleviate an egregious wrong. From his catbird seat overlooking the entire gameboard, the judge easily identifies the whistleblower and although he opines she is extremely intelligent and passionate in her pursuit of justice, she is well in over her head and does not begin to appreciate who all the players are, much less the unimaginable danger she placed on herself. The judge, without hesitation, decides to intervene and level the playing field through an orchestrated surreptitious scheme to provide the whistleblower with a supporting cast. That supporting cast is Webb Espy and his talented entourage of “giant killers.” Once achieved, it’s GAME ON! End-Stage Renal Disease and the systems involved with planning, funding, administering, and regulating those providing such services are fraught with aberrant and fraudulent practices. Greed is most often the motive, but not always. Die-Aly$is encapsulates the quagmire of competitive participants that includes mobsters, Corporate America’s prescription for-profit entities, self-referral Houdinis, and corrupt politicians, as well as an arm of the invisible U.S. Government for a share of the booty. As in the previous two books, the characters are unique, sometimes malicious, and often delicious and easy to visualize. The corkscrew unveiling of the plot runs the gamut from black market kidneys to an assassin that does not exist. Beyond the mystery itself, as the story unfolds there are legitimate questions about modern-day Robin Hoods, the moral right of civil disobedience as well as who are the real good guys and bad guys, and whether it is okay to do something wrong to achieve something right. About the Author John M. Whiddon is a native Floridian, born in the small panhandle town of Chattahoochee, Florida. An avid reader and writer with a background in the healthcare industry, Whiddon ran Florida’s Medicaid Program Integrity Office for more than a decade and, upon retirement, opened a private healthcare regulatory consulting business in 1995. Whiddon received his Bachelor’s degree from McMurry College, his Master’s from Florida State University, where he also taught for five years, and his post-graduate work in Public Administration from Nova University. He is a veteran and served in the United States Air Force from 1966 through 1970. He is involved in numerous civic and conservation organizations. He has been married for almost sixty years and has two children and one granddaughter. Whiddon enjoys calling turkeys, wing shooting, mentoring children from single-parent families, and writing children’s short stories. He currently is a partner in MGW Outfitters, a prestigious wing shooting operation in Argentina and Uruguay.

Book excerpt: Many people might assume that growing up in a town with less than three hundred residents would be quite dull and uneventful. But for author Tina Rye Sloan, growing up in tiny Detroit, Alabama, was anything but boring. In her delightful memoir Southern Serendipity, Sloan shares some rather entertaining and almost unbelievable accounts of life in the Deep South. From discovering numerous mischievous uses for dish soap to miraculously surviving a slide off the tin roof of a barn-propelled by a slick coating of baby oil-Sloan provides a look at the rich upbringing she was fortunate to have, despite her family's poverty. Southern Serendipity also offers a glimpse into Southern small-town life during the late 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. Sloan inadvertently yet artfully describes many facets of Southern culture, from colloquialisms to gardening to education. The collection of heartwarming stories in Southern Serendipity is based around several families whose lives in this small Southern town were woven together like strong, colorful threads in a tapestry.

Book excerpt: In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. (Luke 10: 21) The Bible is a book of hidden treasures purposefully designed so by our God. Many of these hidden treasures are complex, yet they can be understood by ordinary people. Jesus likened this group of people to babes. One of the meanings of babes in Greek is simple-minded. God desires to open the windows of heaven and reveal the secrets of His Holy Word to you. If you consider yourself inept or too simple-minded to understand, then all the better! You are just Gods type, and yes, Hes looking for you. He will reveal to you even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory (1 Corinthians 2:7). Need more proof? Look at what God promises in Revelation 2:17: To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna. May you begin to eat of this hidden manna as you read Windows into the Third Heaven, and may this book be graciously used by the Spirit of God to whet your appetite for more.

The Grass Isn't Greener on the Other Side. Heiresses have always been viewed with eyes of envy. They were the ones for whom the cornucopia had been upended, showering them with unimaginable wealth and opportunity. However, through intimate historical biographies, Women of Means shows us that oftentimes the weaving sisters saved their most heart-wrenching tapestries for the destinies of wealthy women. Happily Never After. From the author of Behind Every Great Man, we now have Women of Means, vignettes of the women who were slated from birth―or marriage―to great privilege, only to endure lives which were the stuff Russian tragic heroines are made of. They are the nonfictional Richard Corys―those not slated for happily ever after. Women of Means is bound to be a non-fiction best seller, full of the best biographies of all time. Some of the women whose silver spoons rusted include: • Almira Carnarvon, the real-life counterpart to Lady Cora of Downton Abbey • Liliane Bettencourt, whose chemist father created L’Oreal... and was a Nazi collaborator • Peggy Guggenheim, who had an insatiable appetite for modern art and men • Nica Rothschild, who traded her gilded life to become the Baroness of Bebop • Jocelyn Wildenstein, who became a cosmetology-enhanced cat-woman • Ruth Madoff, the dethroned queen of Manhattan • Patty Hearst, who trod the path from heiress... to terrorist

Book excerpt: When a senior army officer is killed in action holding off an enemy attack threatening to overrun his outpost, the confidence of his comrades is rocked. Accolades of courage and eulogies flow freely from politicians and Generals alike. For the briefest of moments, a devastated nation pauses to pay homage to a fallen hero. Fellow countrymen marvel at the heroic endeavors, patriotism courses through everyone’s veins, then all too swiftly life moves on. But for the young family, the fight has just begun. This powerful story is as inspirational as it is humbling. Major Paul Harding was the most senior officer to be killed in action during the Iraq campaign. A legend of his time with over 30 years service, people like him are not meant to die in combat. His death shocked every soldier under his command and was felt by three decades of army veterans. Caught in the center of this tragedy, the family courageously battle to come to terms with their grief and fill the void of a talented father and great warrior. Heart-breaking and awe-inspiring in equal measure, the story recounts the immediate aftermath of Major Harding's death and the incredible journey of his family as they navigate their way through the pain of an unwanted new normal. This intimate account of modern war is like no other. Written by his widow and a junior subordinate, it details the life before, and after the heart-wrenching moments when Major Harding’s family are told that, the fiercest of battles in Iraq had claimed his life. This first-hand account includes the gargantuan effort to steady the family's resolve and help them rebuild a life torn apart by conflict and the fifteen year journey to contentment.

Book excerpt: Looking past the apparent lack of a sustainable Irish display culture, this book demonstrates that there is a very full story to tell of the way Ireland displayed its art from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Ireland on Show analyzes the impact of the display of art as a significant political and cultural feature in the make-up of nineteenth-century Ireland - and in how Ireland was viewed beyond its own shores, in particular in Great Britain and the United States. Fintan Cullen directs much-needed critical attention and analysis to a subject that has been largely overlooked from an Irish perspective. This study moves beyond museums, to address the range of art institutions in Irish cities that displayed art, from the Royal Hibernian Academy, founded in the 1820s, to Hugh Lane's Municipal Art Gallery, opened in Dublin in 1908. Throughout, the book explores the battle between the display of a unionist ethos and a nationalist point of view, a constant that resurfaces over the period. By highlighting the tension between unionist and nationalist viewpoints, Cullen uses the display of art to investigate the complexities of Irish cultural life before the founding of the Free State.
