Book excerpt: Building on the success of Jan Horrox's previous book, Introduction to Making Cloth Dolls, Jan's new book focuses on her exquisite fantasy dolls, including beautiful fairies, amazing mermaids, an enigmatic witch and a steampunk doll with attitude. These magical dolls are full of character and are amazingly easy to achieve with the help of this practical book. Step-by-step instructions are provided for all the basic techniques, including how to make the bodies, heads, arms, legs, hands and feet; how to make the hair; and how to needlesculpt and paint the exquisite faces to really bring your character to life. There are instructions for making webbed fingers, delicate fairy wings as well as a mermaid's tail, and there are three easy-to-follow projects to put all your newly acquired skills into practice. Jan encourages the reader to use their imagination and create dolls of their own, and the alternative designs that accompany each project show how easily this can be done simply by changing the faces, colours, fabrics and embellishments used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a must read for anyone making a porcelain doll wanting to enter in a competition. In the book you will find tips and information from notes taken at seminars and private lessons with the top doll makers in the world today. There are two main categories of porcelain dolls modern and antique. Modern dolls are those sculpted by modern artists. Antique dolls are those that were first introduced and sold either more that fifty years ago or, by some definitions, more than one hundred years ago. Actual antique dolls can be purchased for enjoyment and possibly to use as models for the making of reproductions. Excellent reproductions of the antique dolls can be made by modern-day artists. Modern dolls are those sculpted by current-day sculptors. Modern dolls can be painted and dressed in any way the doll artisan prefers. They can have painted eyes, or the holes can be cut out from the porcelain before the bisque firing to allow the insertion of glass eyes. Neither technique is easy. Each has its own challenges, and both look nice when done well. These dolls can be dressed in any way the artist wishes as well. Reproductions of antiques must be done so that the artist reproduces the original patterns and colors as they were initially done on the specific dolls. This means reproducing the eyes with the same number of lashes that the artists painted on the antique dolls, the same slant and the same spacing. Dressing the antique reproductions poses another challenge as the dolls should be dressed in a period costume appropriate for that doll. The fabrics should be natural fibers, often actual vintage or antique fabrics. Significant research is required to determine what styles, fabrics, and colors should be used for specific dolls. This book has a wonderful collection of tips collected from the experts! These are helpful for all doll makers, especially people preparing for competitions. This book contains a wealth of information for lovers and makers of both modern and reproduction antique dolls. The information has been collected over the years from most of the most talented and experienced doll makers in the world. It is shared here with those interested in preserving this art, approaching each aspect of the doll in the best way possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all different in some ways, yet, very similar because we all respond to emotions of love, affection, joy and sorrow. These feelings are common to all-across ethnicities, geographies and boundaries. Yet there are certain factors which contribute to our identity, which visibly make us look dissimilar, and impacts how we connect and belong. The colour of the skin, through its subtle and attached symbolism and beliefs, its presence or the lack of it, tells a story of human dynamics that is constructive and/or destructive, depending on the lens used. It has the visual power to influence, pronounce judgements, divide, confer privileges and even influence the right to love, hate, embrace, protect or kill merely based on colour-the colour of the skin. Colour Matters? explores these cross-cultural dynamics and highlights the difficulties of being a minority in different geographies. The book is replete with stories of individuals across continents and multi-ethnic, multi-professional backgrounds narrating their personal experiences and, hence, learnings from their own encounters. In a world where the race and racism debate continues to occupy a crucial space in public discourse it is worthwhile to embark on an exploratory journey to deconstruct such ideas and discover what really lies beneath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In linguistics, one of the main areas of modern research involves the capabilities and possibilities of there being a "lingua cosmica," a LINCOS, a universal language that could be used to communicate with non-human intelligences. This book touches on the area of the development and use of a "lingua universalis" for interstellar communication, but it also presents concepts that cover a broad area of linguistics. Chomsky's paradigm on universal properties of natural languages, for a long time a leading general theory of natural languages, includes the strong assumption that humans are born with some kind of universals stored in their brains. Are there universals of this kind of language used by intelligent beings and societies elsewhere in the universe? We do not know whether such languages exist. It seems to be impossible to determine, simply because the universe is too large for an exhaustive search. Even verification will be hard to obtain, without quite a bit of luck. This book uses astrolinguistic principles in message construction and is helpful in clarifying and giving perspective to discussions on existential questions such as these.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poppets are dolls used for sympathetic magic, and are designed in the likeness of individuals in order to represent them in spells to help, heal or harm. The word poppet comes from the Middle Ages in England, originally meaning a small doll or child, and it is still in use today as a name of endearment. The term is older than the phrase ‘Voodoo doll’. Pagan Portals – Poppets and Magical Dolls explores the history of poppets and offers a practical guide to making and using them in modern witchcraft. It also covers seasonal dolls, from Brigid dolls, used in celebrations for the first stirrings of spring, to fairy dolls enjoyed in tree-dressing at Yuletide. Other topics covered include spirit dolls, ancestor dolls and dolls as representations of mythological beings and creatures from folklore. The newest book from Lucya Starza, author of Every Day Magic: A Pagan Book of Days.
