Book excerpt: For the next few seconds as he led me to the pool, all I could do was focus on the candy apple red paint that started from the beginning of the hammer handle to the very end of it. The long streak of red paint was shaped like an S, and the handle looked to be a worn-out brown color. The hammer also looked like it was somehow attached to the outside of a dirty leather belt which I assumed was fastened around the man's waist. He must be one of the maintenance men, I thought, telling myself I would probably eventually end up in the pool dead. Oh my God! I silently whispered to Jesus. He's going to kill me. Help me Lord, I prayed without a sound. I was too horror-struck to say a word out loud. All I knew to do was to let him have his way with me and pray for my survival. After the man angrily led me down the last step in the pool, he thrust my face straight down into the water. Then he held my head under for what seemed like several minutes. When he finally let me up for air, I started coughing and choking on the chorine water that had slowly filled up in my lungs. Then he vigorously pulled me close to him, as he clung aggressively to the tape he had wrapped around my eyes, though I could see nothing at this point. Suddenly, I felt him pulling at the bottom of my two-piece bathing suit, trying to take it off of me, but I was only struggling for my breath. I thought I would surely pass out soon, if he didn't rape me or viciously stab me with the knife first. I was scared stiff for my life, but as the next few seconds slowly passed by, nothing seemed to matter much anymore. I knew I was fading away fast because my breathing felt so shallow. Now, I was hoping and praying I would drown to death before he raped and killed me. D.J. DeSai lives in Louisville, Kentucky where she loves to write books and songs. She is also the author of Dory's Oh My God Stories and More Dory's Stories.

Miss Lavinia Tremont, otherwise known as Ianthe, is living her version of hell on earth. The granddaughter of a duke, she has lost her place in Society and though is still chaste, knows that her place in life is now that of a fallen woman. Or is it? When he takes her out into Society on his arm, she is even more terrified, believing that the secrets of her past might return to cause trouble for everyone involved. More importantly, she fears that she is falling in love with a man that she can never have. Especially once he discovers who she really is.

Book excerpt: Understanding and appreciating the ethical dilemmas associated with business is an important dimension of marketing strategy. Increasingly, matters of corporate social responsibility are part of marketing's domain. Ethics in Marketing contains 20 cases that deal with a variety of ethical issues such as questionable selling practices, exploitative advertising, counterfeiting, product safety, apparent bribery and channel conflict that companies face across the world. A hallmark of this book is its international dimension along with high-profile case studies that represent situations in European, North American, Chinese, Indian and South American companies. Well known multinationals like Caterpillar, Coca Cola, Cadbury and Facebook are featured. The two introductory chapters cover initial and advanced perspectives on ethical and socially responsible marketing, in order to provide students with the necessary theoretical foundation to engage in ethical reasoning. A decision-making model is also presented, for use in the case analyses. This unique case-book provides students with a global perspective on ethics in marketing and can be used in a free standing course on marketing ethics or marketing and society or it can be used as a supplement to the readings for other marketing classes.

Book excerpt: An adventurous slice of waterfront life where mystery surrounds history. A sweet story with likeable characters. If you're looking for a pleasant read about a single mom and her son discovering the charm of a small town, mixed with bits of history, romance and adventure, this one's for you! Gahan uses vivid descriptions of the details of boating, fishing and aquatic life, as well as the physical and psychological makeup of this fictional bayside community. Relationships combine with places to play a part in James' life story. James' character is forged by events and his adventures in Harmony Bay. From harrowing life and death experiences on the water to forays into the surrounding hills, each day dawns with a new lesson about life. The boy encounters many wonderful individuals in his new home town. Among them are a magnificent Newfoundland retriever dog named Angus--and Chloe, a beautiful white mare. Angus' master Billy is a kindly closet intellectual and philosophizer who is a physically powerful man strong enough to split firewood with a single blow of his ancient axe. His snowy white beard and recluse nature causes speculation about his identity. Marine biologist Jake Kane is the local hero who sweeps Dory off her feet, adding an element of romance to the story. James learns a great deal from Jake and the dozens of other colorful inhabitants of this amazing waterfront community. Harmony Bay, written for a wide audience that appeals to many levels, examines a slice of small-town life. A modern day mystery, drawn from covert events of the American Revolution, weaves through the story. Ten-year-old James McDonough moves from the crime and violence of the inner-city to a New Englandish East Coast town, Harmony Bay. His widowed mother, Dory, has taken a position as a librarian in this small town. Its economy is driven by the whims of nature, nor'easters boiling down the coast, hurricanes lurking off shore, and the barometric rise and fall of shellfish prices.

Book excerpt: A moving and eye-opening look at the story of manufacturing in America, whether it can ever successfully return to our shores, and why our nation depends on it, told through the experience of one young couple in Maine as they attempt to rebuild a lost industry, ethically. • From the best-selling author of Into the Raging Sea Meet Ben and Whitney Waxman, two tireless idealists attempting to do the impossible: produce an American-made, union-made, all American-sourced sweatshirt—an American hoodie. Ben spent a decade organizing workers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin, fighting for Americans at a time when national support for unions had sunk to an all-time low. Struggling with depression and a drug dependency, Ben lands back in his hometown of Portland, Maine, desperate to prove that ethical manufacturing is possible. There, he meets Whitney, a bartender wrestling with her own complicated past. In each other they see a better future, a version of the American dream they can build together. Making It in America is a deeply personal account of one couple's quest to change the world. As they navigate private struggles, international trade wars, and a global pandemic, their story carries us across the nation and across time, from the cotton fields of Mississippi to New York City’s hollowed-out garment district to a family-owned zipper company in Los Angeles to the enormous knit-and-dye factories in North Carolina. Throughout, we grapple with what "Made in the USA" really means to Americans in the twenty-first century. Making It in America also offers a unique look at global politics, economics, and labor through the story of textile manufacturing. It was the demand for cheap cloth that sparked the industrial revolution. It was the brutality of the textile industry that first drove workers to organize. Making It in America reveals how profoundly manufacturing shapes all of us. Each twist and turn of the Waxmans' quest tells us how we got here, where we are now, and where we're headed—through the people that produce the fabric of our lives.
